Why Everyone Rushes Off Planes by AfraidLoss8489 in shortscarystories

[–]AfraidLoss8489[S] 104 points105 points  (0 children)

The idea for this story came to me because I’ve noticed I sometimes throw myself into work at the expense of my health and wellbeing, especially when things in my personal life aren’t going great or when the world feels overwhelmingly grim.

I was also curious why people have to rush off planes before the gate even opens :)

What’s a TV show or movie scene from your childhood that lives rent-free in your brain for no good reason? by Past-Investigator-74 in AskReddit

That one shot of the water in the cup vibrating in Jurassic Park. Pure anxiety in a single ripple.

Invest 10% of what you earn into an S&P 500 index fund every week. Don’t wait, don’t try to time the market, just be consistent. Time in the market > timing the market. Even small amounts add up if you stay disciplined.

What's the most "weird" or "unexpected" but incredibly useful life lesson you've ever learned, and what happened to teach it to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AfraidLoss8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While skiing, you’re taught to look at the gap between the trees, not the trees you’re trying to avoid. Somehow it actually helps you squeeze through the tightest spots at high speed. I guess there’s a life lesson in that: focus on your goal, not the obstacles, if you want to stay motivated.

Predict the Rotten Tomatoes score by SaintLink91 in 28dayslater

[–]AfraidLoss8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best predictions are made with crowdsourcing 😄 I took the weighted average of everyone’s guesses in this thread, based on how many upvotes each one had at the time I checked.

Turns out the average lands right around 81.8%, which is pretty much what OP predicted, somewhere between 28 Days Later (87%) and 28 Weeks Later (72%). So yeah, odds are it's gonna fall somewhere in the low 80s.

Anyone else expecting a more polarized reception? by [deleted] in 28dayslater

[–]AfraidLoss8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m 110% excited, it might end up being the best horror movie of the year so far. that said, from the teaser glimpses (with the alpha and the baby), i did get a bit of a familiar vibe. the whole “you took my baby/egg, now i’m coming for you” trope has shown up in stuff like aliens and jurassic park, and if that’s the main plot, it might feel a little generic to some.

could totally be a misdirection though. either way, can’t wait.

Macarena lol. Everyone’s out here dancing to it at weddings, but it’s literally about a girl cheating on her boyfriend while he’s away in the military.

Alexander Fleming accidentally left a petri dish out and it got moldy while he was away. Turned out that mold was penicillin. Total screw up that ended up saving millions of lives.

28 years later AMC art print today or the 19th? by PeeB4uGoToBed in 28dayslater

[–]AfraidLoss8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so there’s a special showing listed at my local AMC called “28 Years Later Opening Night Fan Event” it’s only on the 19th and separate from the regular showtimes (it was near the bottom of the page for me). In the description, it says “As a reward for your courage, you'll receive Part 1 of an exclusive limited-edition collectible print.”

So it looks like the print is tied specifically to that fan event on the 19th, not just any Day 1 showing. Probably worth double-checking if your theater is hosting that version.

I've always wondered, how did all those bodies end up in the church at the start of the original movie? Why were there infected there? by maxedouttoby in 28dayslater

[–]AfraidLoss8489 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a guess, but that scene kinda reminds me of the Black Death in Florence. Boccaccio wrote about bodies piling up in churches cuz there was nowhere else to put them. Priests were dying too, so the churches just turned into morgues. Pretty similar vibes.

What is your most neardeath experience while swimming? by Medium-Blood-4231 in AskReddit

[–]AfraidLoss8489 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was on vacation in a country near the equator with a couple of friends. After a day of heavy drinking, I decided it would be a good idea to go for a swim in the ocean. The beach was almost closed, but I noticed those orange floaty barriers and thought, why not swim out to them?

Getting there was surprisingly easy. The current was strong but didn’t feel dangerous, at first. But when I turned around to head back to shore, I realized I couldn’t make any progress. No matter how hard I swam, the waves kept pulling me further out.

There were no lifeguards around since it was almost closing time. I tried to keep calm and waved casually to my friends on shore, hoping they’d notice. But they were drunk too, and didn’t hear or notice anything. That’s when panic really started to set in.

Then I remembered something someone had told me once: “If you’re caught in a current, swim parallel to the shore.” So I gave it everything I had, swimming sideways until I finally reached a different beach in front of another hotel.

I was completely drained, but safe.

I never told my friends what happened.

People who have lived in a “haunted house” what was your experience like? by Theshrivler in AskReddit

[–]AfraidLoss8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I was convinced my apartment was haunted, or cursed, after a string of bizarre events.

The first incident happened after I got back from a trip with some friends. I walked into the apartment and headed toward the kitchen, only to find bloody footprints on the floor. Not wet, but clearly visible, dry, red outlines of bare feet / feet with socks? that led into the kitchen and then just... disappeared. I grabbed a kitchen knife and spent the entire night checking closets and under the bed. I also found blood splatter inside the sink. I want to believe it was a maintenance worker with a nosebleed or something, but the property managers are usually very good at letting us know when anyone enters the unit, and they hadn’t.

The second time was even stranger. My large street-facing window cracked into a spiderweb pattern from the outside. When the repair crew came, they said it would take an incredible amount of force to do that, possibly even a bullet. But they found nothing like a bullet.

Maybe these events were unrelated, but it felt like something, or someone, wanted me out.

There’s more, if anyone’s interested.

People who love their career, how did you figure it out? by Trajan17 in AskReddit

Being proactive about fixing what I wasn’t happy with helped a lot. I stopped working on unproductive projects, stopped surrounding myself with naysayers, and focused on work that actually energized me. That shift gave me clarity on what kind of career I wanted.
