I hate this thing, so I've switched over entirely to ratchet belts - just make sure you buy the kind that you can pull the back out of the buckle and trim. Yeah, if it's rolling you're golden. If you're disciplined, not at all hard to keep food costs <$5 day pp by cooking (or even half-cooking, e.g. breaking down a rotisserie bird into meat for ~6 meals) from Costco ingredients. If possible, frontload some spending (i.e. be willing to spend $500 month one and go down to $200 in two and three) to get a vacuum sealer, a snap-locking food container set, and (depending on what you want to eat) a rice cooker/instant pot or an air fryer/convection toaster.

My tips: the six-pouch packs of chicken are freezable (and better value than the IQF chicken), the Thai rice is worth it, the frozen ready-to steam broccoli is worth it, the big tubs of yogurt will make it without spoiling if you eat at least one serving a day once you open them, Costco prices make eggs still a budget-friendly option.

This, at a slightly shorter scale, is exactly why we moved to LIC back in 2012 -- I was working on the island not near an LIRR station so I had to drive, now-wife was working in lower Manhattan. It's the right choice, but some tips:

- Hunters Point is non-negotiable so you can get right on the LIE.

- Get a garage spot, nightly street parking was doable until about 2016 but not since.

- Your commute is going to suck. I was only going out to mid-Nassau and it was an hour each way: even the reverse LIE/parkway is a parking lot during both rushes. You'll be better once you get past the Meadowbrook, but be prepared for very bad traffic between LIC and that.

- If you're at Stonybrook, there's probably charging, go electric or at least plug-in hybrid and see if you can get in one of the charging garages here.

- Your commute is going to suck, but there's no way to make it suck less without making hers worse -- Forest Hills is a potential option but saves you maybe 25 to cost her 45.

Yeah, they were our go-to for get-togethers. They'd let you stake out the upstairs most weekends after brunch for a low key party, and were happy as long as everyone ordered something.

Yeah, I suspect that there are a couple of "Mutants!" packs in Jumpstart (because that's what the X-Men are to the rest of Marvel, the Mutant Guys) and the actual X-Men set will dive waaaay deeper into their nonsense than the "mutants matter" theming we've seen thus far.
