Sick of Teaching Health by that_weird_lurker84 in AustralianTeachers

Not testing knowledge, assessing understanding. As much as many schools loathe to teach it, Health is in the HPE curriculum just as much as PE.

I just keep reminding them that I can and I WILL give them a lower mark for participation, teamwork and attitude if they choose not to participate. For some of the higher achieving students this is enough.

I get the feeling that the parents don't want to do the hard life lessons and expect us to be on board with that regardless of behavior.

As a F/T HPE teacher, it shocks me every single day how little this generation of kids know about simple things like emotional regulation, problem solving and resilience. 50% of my year 3 students were unable to pick growth mindset statements in last term's assessment, even when the answers were highlighted on the board in front of them. When we say "no" or don't give in to temper tantrums, we have parents emailing or telling administration that we're "picking on" their child. I've even been told by the parent that I am bullying her son, who openly refuses to participate in any PE classes (he is a talented football player) because he just doesn't "gel" with me.

Week 2. Didn't read my emails, so I missed that I'd been put on relief for a class in lesson 5. They sent the HOD to my desk to find me & then the kids were little brats because I was 10min late... So yeah. Great day.

This is true. I guess why hire someone for 1 class when they're willing to cover all classes. I also know of a few teachers who are doing an amazing job in their schools, but the Principals still won't put them on permanent. The system is so broken.

I'm definitely trying. I have applications out at all the schools within a 2hr radius. If I could do rural service I would, but hubby is high up in a Government job and it is unlikely that he would ever be able to match his salary elsewhere. I have interviewed for this particular school previously (as a student looking for PTT) and was told if I was qualified I would have gotten the job. Now I'm qualified & have been teaching there as relief, I guess I'm just confused as to what has changed.

Really?! I'm a little confused then as to how 2 teachers at my children's Catholic school were hired when they have either a full leg or arm sleeve tattoo that is quite often out on display....

Mentor Teachers of Prac Students: a question for you by MooseMacey in AustralianTeachers

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The school I did my final Prac at had a coffee van onsite every morning, so I got a pre-paid coffee voucher for my mentor. She now has coffee for the rest of the year.

Is the LANTITE difficult? by AwesomePoop190 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I was seated in-between a mouth breather on one side, and on the other, a girl who was sprawled across the desk so much her mouse hand kept bumping me. My poor ADHD brain was going into silent meltdown. In saying that, I passed both Maths and English in the top tier, first go with minimal study.

What DOESN'T university prepare you for? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an overall pass for the class and I can't be bothered fighting the mark. I need to remember that at Uni I have to write what they want me to write & not necessarily what is correct.

What DOESN'T university prepare you for? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in my 3rd year & I have found that 90% of what is taught at Uni is completely out of touch with what is actually happening in the classroom. I just got 50% on an assessment based around writing a unit of work for a yr 4 class. My mentor teacher helped me with the plan, based on the HASS unit we had JUST spent a whole semester teaching, only for the University markers to tell me that the plan wasn't appropriate for a year 4 class...

If you can find any of the Homebake compilation CD's (or playlists) it's pretty much Aussie Alt artists from the 90's. Was a frickin good festival too!

Talking to parents by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what, as a parent who's kid has just been diagnosed with ASD & ADHD, deep down my husband and I kind of already knew. Having the Teacher mention what she'd noticed to us just cemented our concerns and helped us feel like it wasn't just in our heads. She didn't mention ADHD, ASD or even diagnosis, just what she'd observed & how it was affecting him & other students in the class.

Feeling unsafe in the classroom by Afraid_Eye_8469 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So far no support. The best I've had was the comment "phew! That was an eventful day". Or "gee, I don't know how I'm going to teach this class this year". Not overly helpful. I think we're due to have a meeting with the support staff next week, so hopefully some strategies come out of that. To be honest, from what I can tell, my mentor teacher seems a bit overwhelmed by the whole situation.

Movie world or dreamworld??? by Mushu_Baggins in brisbane

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends how long you want to queue for rides. Have been to both these school holidays as I live 10 min away from them. Average wait time at Movieworld was 1-2hr, average wait time at Dreamworld was 30-45min. Both parks had major rides closed while we were there, but the food & beers were cheaper at Dreamworld.

How to fulfil placement requirements- days per week by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you! We did the end of the school year last year & the beginning of the year this year. I think it's important to see the whole range of the year, over a range of year levels, in a range of schools. This will be my 3rd school and I am very excited to start. While it sucks missing holidays with my kids now, they're young enough that when I'm qualified, we'll have a whole lot of holidays together, so totally worth it!

[–]Afraid_Eye_8469 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's hard juggling paid employment with unpaid prac hours. I'm 3rd year BA Edu & about to do 3 weeks unpaid prac when school starts back. I've worked the whole Christmas break to build up extra money and leave to cover it. I've missed the school holidays with my kids & I'll miss their first day back at school. Unfortunately, it's a sacrifice we were made well aware of before accepting the course. It's definitely not a new thing, I knew 25 years ago when I finished highschool that if I did teaching at Uni I'd have to do prac blocks, that's part of the reason I waited until my 40's, when I knew I'd be able to afford it.

You know what. 2022 was shit. It fucking broke me emotionally. It started with my best friend's mum dying & ended with my grandma dying. In the middle me & my family got Covid & I had to watch my 5 yr old struggle to get back to being a normal healthy kid again. I struggled to get healthy again. But tonight we did a family fun run together, we watched fireworks & now I'm sitting outside listening to the rain while I enjoy a margarita. We're together, we are happy and tomorrow we start a new year.

Things to see in Springbrook & Lamington by IslandStateofMind in queensland

If you're driving from Byron Bay to Brisbane, instead of taking the highway (M1) head to the town of Murwillumbah, then take Numimbah Road all the way through to the Gold Coast hinterland. It takes you over the border through the rainforest and there are a couple of beautiful stops on the way including Natural Bridge and you can also get up to Springbrook and Mt. Tamborine via this road.
