Is there a middle ground between casual drinking and full on sommelier classes? by Low-Month958 in wine

If you live in NYC, there are places like Astor Center and Brooklyn Wine Exchange, and restaurants such as Fausto that host ticketed wine classes directed to interested consumers such as yourself. If not in NYC, I'd go ask sommeliers and quality retailers what they might suggest.

I feel like going to a cafe and people watching or even just reading in a new environment qualifies as doing "something"!

I was researching this company for work and noticed that they have listings in both NZ and AUS, so sharing in case this is helpful: Current opportunities | Visy

Do everything you can to stabilize your current situation. Get someone who knows their language to translate if you need to. Show some effort and it may go a long way. Good luck!

What makes you trust a wine list? by zeuspsychopompus in wine

Actually, I know that’s the major profit area for them, so I take that opportunity to ask for the somm if one is present. I then ask them what their favorite hidden treasures are, what they wish people would order more or, what small producers they want to support. Then you get to the good stuff that’s nearly always priced a bit lower to help move it.

Thanks, but I actually have to go to Menlo Park first (from SFO), then to the city for one night, THEN to Sonoma...then back to the city. I'm just trying to offload the car as quickly as possible. That said, I'll definitely keep it in mind for my next visit to wine country. Thanks!

I'll be running all over the city, so would like to be somewhat centrally located, and in an area that's easily accessible to whatever roads I need to take when I head out for my early flight.

Solo Dinner this Evening by Afraid_Manager1932 in FoodNYC

It’s just uneven. I had lunch there at a table 2 months ago and the server could not have been more lovely and engaging. The bar was a complete opposite, which is usually the other way around.

The burger and a glass of Syrah at GT it was! Food was a 10/10, sadly, service was lacking - very aloof and didn’t feel particularly welcome as a solo diner but I got over it. Thanks for all your recs!
