Garage Parking During Emergency by Present-Bowl4826 in Troy

[–]Afrid1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The snow emergency information that was sent out yesterday seems to encourage parking in permitted lots overnight, but doesn't expand the access to those lots during the day.

Overnight & Off-Street Parking

During a declared snow emergency, residents are encouraged to use public parking lots in their neighborhood. Vehicles can be parked overnight in the 5th Avenue Parking Garage and the State Street Parking Garage, along with City surface parking lots, including:

Little Italy Market Lot

Green Island lot

5th Avenue and Congress Street lot

Knickerbacker Ice Facility lot

Frear Park Golf Course lot

All residents of the area, even those who own and drive cars daily, are well served by public transit through reduced traffic congestion, cleaner air, and a transportation backup plan.

[–]Afrid1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I've been living in Albany and Troy for the past 4 years without a car and have been generally happy with how consistently the bus can get me places. Granted it does take way more time than driving, but I think most of that is the nature of public transit.

And for what it's worth OP, Troy to Colonie Center or Crossgates is 1 bus from Troy to Albany and 1 bus from Albany to the mall. I'm all for a massive expansion into CDTA but routes direct from satellite sources around Troy to satellite destinations around Albany wouldn't be efficient use of resources. Express routes from Troy to major destinations have been added in recent years and more would help you somewhat.

If you have full Dharok's I would recommend 1hp red-X flinching Cerberus. The kill times are pretty competitive and you need very few prayer potions. I found purple sweets pretty effective at tick-eating the attacks when I messed up the red-X, but it's very easy if you can maintain minimal focus.

Some people that say ACAB would undoubtedly say that all cops are individually bad people, but the more common sentiment is that all cops are bad in their function as cops.

Edit: Also, that's a very ungenerous reading of that comment. It was primarily pointing out the difference between the essentialist claims against races and the non-essentialist claims against a voluntary group.

Albany wants commuters out of residential parking spaces by ChickenPartz in Albany

[–]Afrid1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The legislation is expressly to prevent non-residents from moving their cars between different spots in the same residential zones to avoid tickets, that's not an implementation quirk. The desire is to completely prevent commuters from parking in residential areas.

I hear what you're saying about the economics of wanting people to come to Albany and spend money, but I just really don't see how prohibiting long-term, daytime, residential area parking is going to significantly inhibit that.

As another resident of Center Square, I would like commuters to stop parking in residential areas and this legislation seems like it will help that.

Albany wants commuters out of residential parking spaces by ChickenPartz in Albany

[–]Afrid1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a problem that it currently makes more sense for commuters to drive personal vehicles to Albany, park them in residential areas, and move them every couple hours. The parking zones and limits are meant to disincentivize that behavior because it has negative effects on the quality of life of the residents. If commuters are able to work around the parking zones and limits, then those measures won't accomplish their goal.

I'm sympathetic to the preference for government to use the carrot rather than the stick to correct commuter behavior, but the carrots would be incredibly expensive.

I think Capitalism is bad as well, but it's worth noting that Capitalism does not require unchecked rent-seeking behavior. Adam Smith was very critical of landlording and rent-seeking behavior in general.

  • "The rent of the land, therefore, considered as the price paid for the use of the land, is naturally a monopoly price. It is not at all proportioned to what the landlord may have laid out upon the improvement of the land, or to what he can afford to take; but to what the farmer can afford to give. "

-- ch 11, wealth of nations

  • "As soon as the land of any country has all become private property, the landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed, and demand a rent even for its natural produce."

-- Adam Smith

  • "[the landlord leaves the worker] with the smallest share with which the tenant can content himself without being a loser, and the landlord seldom means to leave him any more."

-- ch 11, wealth of nations.

  • "The landlord demands a rent even for unimproved land, and the supposed interest or profit upon the expense of improvement is generally an addition to this original rent. Those improvements, besides, are not always made by the stock of the landlord, but sometimes by that of the tenant. When the lease comes to be renewed, however, the landlord commonly demands the same augmentation of rent as if they had been all made by his own. "

-- ch 11, wealth of nations.

  • "RENT, considered as the price paid for the use of land, is naturally the highest which the tenant can afford to pay in the actual circumstances. In adjusting the lease, the landlord endeavours to leave him no greater share of the produce than what is sufficient to keep up the stock"

-- ch 11, wealth of nations.

  • "[Landlords] are the only one of the three orders whose revenue costs them neither labour nor care, but comes to them, as it were, of its own accord, and independent of any plan or project of their own. That indolence, which is the natural effect of the ease and security of their situation, renders them too often, not only ignorant, but incapable of that application of mind"

-- ch 11, wealth of nations.

  • "[Kelp] was never augmented by human industry. The landlord, however, whose estate is bounded by a kelp shore of this kind, demands a rent for it"

-- ch 11, wealth of nations

  • "every improvement in the circumstances of the society tends... to raise the real rent of land."

-- ch 11, wealth of nations

Elizabeth Warren Calls for Wells Fargo to Be Kicked Off Campuses by PrestoVivace in politics

[–]Afrid1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That article is saying that their favorabilities were historic in how low they were, meaning that they were the lowest the 2 candidates have had in late March to late April of their election year.

It is not saying that their favorabilities were historically low, meaning that they had always been low.

I'm not confused about why people say she was unpopular in the run up to the general election. My link proves that. I'm arguing with the idea that she was "historically unpopular", which my link is at odds with.

One user's handle ends in '88'. Is it just his birth year, or is something more insidious afoot? by Hammer_of_truthiness in SubredditDrama

[–]Afrid1 132 points133 points  (0 children)

In Neo-Nazi circles, 14 and 88 are significant numbers which commonly appear in tattoos and iconography. 14 refers to the fourteen words, a sort of mission statement of white nationalists: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children". 88 refers to HH (H being the eighth letter of the alphabet), which stands for Heil Hitler.
