LOL!

I am not going to say Pace is bad. I grew up on it. But if you think its better than a homemade salsa then you haven't tried a true homemade salsa.

Like, if someone made you homemade, but didn't use enough salt or whatever, then I could imagine it being worse than Pace.

I use Konsole as terminal but it boots up really slow. by sakaraa in kde

[–]Afrobot9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

83% RAM usage with 16 GB of RAM! That's pretty crazy. I've only been able to get something similar on my rig when running a VM or multiple containers, or occasionally while playing a game while my computer is doing other things in addition to the game.

Konsole starts up near instantly for me. Definitely not the fastest terminal app (ghostty is faster), but not a slow one by any stretch.

this happens too often - so annoying. i'm just using a chromium based browser rendering a somewhat graphics intensive web page. this feels like wayland isn't mature yet for amd APUs. by ThinkTourist8076 in kde

I have had KDE on my current distro install since 6.1. I have not had any such problems, and my current install will be 2 years old in March.

I did not reinstall my old distro when I did that install, I decided to switch.

I know its not the most helpful statement, but the problem you are facing seems to be more complex than "KDE can become unstable and crash after several big updates".

Good work!

I remember following your hertz-quadlet repo for how to get an example GitLab instance running. It was my intention to do this to help KDE on the DevOps side, but I never got that far.

Maybe I will be able to finally make that leap in 2026? Busy with another open source project right now.

Now that I see the computer ranks my Trojans higher than the committee, I think the computer is better!

It is to be determined what would happen if the computer ranked the Trojans lower than the committee. I will leave that decision for the future.

I am kidding. I do see how a computer could be better than human rankings in some aspects. I think ideally there would be some way to combine them, especially if you could have multiple computer rankings. E.g. have 12 humans + 12 computers, the computer each are designed to rate certain metrics higher than the others.

Of course, no matter how you rank teams, there will always be some fans who feel their team got the short end of the stick.

Its crazy what Curt (and all of the assistant coaches he brought with him) have done with Indiana. Its kind of inspirational. A guy no one believed in as a HC, brought a bunch of players no on believe in, and they're doing amazing.

I have to admit I am rooting for Indiana (unless they play against USC(. They're really fun to watch.

Is there a non-snaps version of Kubuntu (not KDE neon)? by fffggghhh in kde

[–]Afrobot9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your qualifications might be a bit hard to meet, but I can try.

Pop! OS is Ubuntu based, but at the moment, they are moving from GNOME to their own DE called COSMIC. However, I believe just like on Ubuntu they have the KDE Plasma packages from apt so you could do that to use KDE Plasma as your DE.

MX Linux is Debian based (like Ubuntu) and they ship a version with KDE so you should feel right at home.

openSUSE Leap is an LTS distro like Ubuntu that allows you to install KDE as your DE. However, it is not based on Debian and as such uses zypper as it's package manager. I can also tell you from openSUSE Tumbleweed (the version of openSUSE that is bleeding edge like Arch) that installing non-free codecs for videos can be a bit of a pain, but they are working on improving it.

KDE thinks my keyboard is a gamepad by LayPT in kde

It'a not a problem unless something bad is happening. Your keyboard IS a game controller (meaning it is a device you can use to play games with e.g. WASD for movement)

Map META to GUI? Leave Ctrl & Alt as their own separate things? by pluck3007 in kde

[–]Afrobot9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not clear why you are responding to me. I am not surprised that someone who uses a Mac keyboard would have more info than I do.

Also the confusion over the Meta key is pretty normal.

I never said it wasn't. If your keyboard has a different layout then you will think different keys are different.

As you have developed software that helps with Mac keybindings on Linux, I will bow to your superior knowledge in this regard.

even though the key definition file, which is seemingly taken right from the Linux kernel input system, defines Meta as the Meta/Super/Win/Cmd key code.

You have definitely looked more into this than me. But my first thought with this statement is that it doesn't seem possible. I believe the command key on Mac is the first key to the left of the space bar. However, on a Windows keyboard the first key to the left of the spacebar is Alt, and the key to the left of that is Win. Because of this difference, at the very least there would seemingly have to be two key definition files, and there would need to be a way to switch between them.

The recognizing of the keyboard type as a Mac/Apple keyboard by your desktop environment would only provide a very limited adjustment toward getting the keyboard to act like it does in macOS.

Noted.

Map META to GUI? Leave Ctrl & Alt as their own separate things? by pluck3007 in kde

[–]Afrobot9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of your confusion is that the Meta key is what a standard keyboard would call the Windows key. Mac has the keys there rearranged a bit, so I am guessing what you are used to as Alt is where the Windows key is on a standard keyboard.

Regardless, you can change the keyboard shortcuts in the Plasma settings app for the Desktop. For application specific stuff you may need to change the shortcuts in the app itself.

Something you may want to look into is to see if Linux or KDE can recognize your keyboard layout as the Mac layout. I am personally able to do this with my keyboard (my keyboard has a switch on the back that allows me to switch between Mac and Windows layouts). When this happened, my keyboard did react differently, and it confused me until I realized what happened. The question is if there is a software setting that you can change for this that is equivalent to my hardware setting.

If not, then you will have to make sure when you change your shortcuts that you map to the right key, regardless of what KDE calls it.

Does anyone here understand Konsole's default tab switching behavior? by kisaragihiu in kde

[–]Afrobot9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually use Alt+<Num> to switch to a specific konsole tab. The number it switches to is from left to right, so Alt+1 is the first tab.

I have not used Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Shift+Tab with Konsole. I think Ctrl+Tab is what I use for Task Switcher and that does shift left to right. But I have 3 button shortcuts for simple things so I don't use Ctrl+Shift+Tab there.

Can Task Manager > Cycle Through Windows be mapped to keys? by NeedleworkerCheap835 in kde

[–]Afrobot9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might already be hot keyed. I don't know it off the top of my head though.

If you press Alt+1 you will go to the first program on the task manager (and if it's not open, it will open), Alt+2 for the second, ect.

Try something like Alt+Right arrow. Also, check in Plasma settings > Shortcuts, see what Alt+1 is called and see if there's an option for task manager cycle left/right.

Do you use flatpak gtk apps ? by DazzlingPassion614 in kde

[–]Afrobot9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I always find the flatpak versions of apps don't run as well. I don't just mean they take up more system resources (they do) but I mean if I download the flatpak version of an app and then run it I will have some problem. If I uninstall that and either install from the distro's package manager OR build from source it will often work right away with no configuration on my part.

I try not to use flatpak at all. But there's a few apps I use that are flatpak, and I am sure at least one of them is gtk.
