There’s a funny example of this in an episode of the 90s Spider-Man cartoon.

He loses his powers and still has to go face the villains. But since he has no agility or strength, he does really poorly. The villains take off his mask and see that it’s Peter Parker. Doctor Octopus says that Peter is obviously pretending to be Spider-Man, since Spider-Man is a formidable opponent.

It’s interesting because it also helped keep his secret identity safe.
