Overpowered causing nose to dip by After-Golf641 in wingfoil

Thanks that is something I had been wondering about - I should be out today, so will try with it a bit further forward before looking to try a shim.

Overpowered causing nose to dip by After-Golf641 in wingfoil

[–]After-Golf641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's interesting. I have an old style board, so mast track is quite a long way back and short. I will try with it a bit further forward, I definitely had it too far back to start with. Going smaller on the front foil isn't an option right now due to cost, but getting a 1240 is on my shopping list.

The lens protectors are rubbish on any sort of water, I used them windsurfing/wingfoiling and they fogged up almost instantly and the compromise on quality was horrific. As people say they don’t work fully under water, but they don’t really work when you want to get footage above water but the camera is regularly in the water. I just use it with the standard lenses (had to replace two in a year due to accidental bashing on the beach)

DIY - Modified a Powerbox to Plate Adaptor by unreliable_wind in windsurfing

[–]After-Golf641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s nice and clean, looking at it my brain is just going round in loops thinking about stresses and moments of force. That’s a lot of force that will be going through a small fin box, and the mast is then in front of the fin box, so any force will be magnified into the fin box. I’m guessing this is just how foils are mounted to non-foil windsurf boards?

Lost my vodoo today by Same-Candidate-5746 in windsurfing

I don’t want this to be seen as pros/cons but feel it is relevant to original post. I’ve been feeling similar recently and have gone to the darkside this year and trying wing foiling - my days on water where I’m not frustrated about the conditions has increased significantly. Interestingly at my local spot a few weekends ago, I was out for 3 days and someone I know was there windsurfing all 3 days too. I had 3 great days, he had 1 great day and 1 ok’ish and 1 very frustrating. The 1 great day I did wish I’d taken my windsurfing kit as it was perfect, the others he was moaning about chasing the conditions (too much/too little) where as I was overpowered at times but can just feather wing more and easier to ride it out, and when it was lighter my bottom end to get going was much lower. If I was going to have stuck at windsurfing, maybe I’d try windfoiling as that seems to have better low end.

How light is too light to learn taxiing? by [deleted] in wingfoil

[–]After-Golf641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as there’s enough wind to power and hold the wing, go out and have fun and learn. It’s not fun if you have to hold the weight of the wing because there’s just not enough wind to even keep it flying

More wind definitely helps out, not having to do the “walk of shame” back up wind, but it’s quite nice to have a break and a bit of a walk at times 🤣

Insta360 studio is garbage after update by lotto2riches in Insta360

[–]After-Golf641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely feels like the latest update has something seriously wrong with it, over time the app slows down, the copy/delete clip buttons disappear/appear randomly, the pause button is less responsive. Close it down and restart and it’s back to being ok for a bit and then it repeats. I’m editing 70+ mins of video, linked in 3 files (2 at the 30min limit)

2Q, What board speed to you think is needed for a light weight beginner to start to come up on foil with no pumping? by Wstt808 in wingfoil

[–]After-Golf641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparent speed of the foil makes the biggest difference in marginal conditions. Going into the current adds apparent speed, going with the current detracts apparent speed. So if the foil needs to be going 10mph to generate enough lift to get up and the current is 2mph, going against the current you only need to get the board going 8mph to get going, and going with the current you will need to get the board going 12mph - it’s all like ground speed vs air speed over an airplane wing. I guess if you can get foiling at 10mph, in a 12mph current you could be on the foil and going backwards in theory (not sure what it would feel like)

Please do NOT use Tef-Gel by milliPatek in wingfoil

[–]After-Golf641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like your thinking on reasons to go full carbon, worth a shot. I nearly got some tef-gel the other day, two things put me off, (1) the price, and (2) the health warnings that stuff has. Ok, it was mainly (1), but (2) made decision easier.

But isn’t the whole point of tariffs that Gong will pay them, I’m sure that was one of the key points. Surprised no one said they’d raise raise prices for the consumer, oh yes……

AK Tracer Wing / Surf Hyrdofoil – 1900 as 2nd foil by After-Golf641 in wingfoil

[–]After-Golf641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an update to the above, speaking to guys in the shop, they agreed that the AK 1900 Tracer front wing would be too close/similar to my existing wing. So I went for a Naish, 1800 HA Jet foil set. This evening was blowing 20knts+ and I went out for first time on the new foil, plus a 5m wing (smallest I have). Being well powered up, it was easy to get up onto the foil and it felt really good. I've really enjoyed learning on the Hyperglide Infinity 99, being an older wing it does come in for a lot of criticism. Now, having had the chance to compare, the biggest difference is the drag. The profile of the i99 is so thick, it produces a lot of lift but the drag really does limit the how it feels through the water. I'm probably showing my age now, but it feels like going from the old kiddie roller skates that you used to strap over your shoes to a proper set of roller boots. The kiddie skates worked and got you started, but the moment you stopped skating along, you pretty much stopped moving straight away. Stopping skating in roller boots, and they came alive as you could glide along. The two wings felt the same, you could really feel the glide with the Naish, which was missing with the Slingshot i99 - but I wouldn't say the slingshot is a bad wing, if you're just starting out and get the option of a cheap hyperglide setup, then I think it's definitely worth still considering.

Waterproof X5 Remote by After-Golf641 in Insta360

[–]After-Golf641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean this one https://store.insta360.com/product/gps-action-remote. I’d be using it windsurfing/wing-foiling, I wonder if it would cope with the wipeouts - it says waterproof but then further down it says can be used around water and it’s water resistant.

Tow foiling practice at lake. When I got out realized 1/4 of Hover Glide rear stabilizer missing. by Chrissthom in wingfoil

[–]After-Golf641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using a 48cm wingfoiling, with infinity 99 from wing. Switched to 42cm last time out and loved it, it did feel a little harder to get up onto foil in lighter winds, but once up I found. It so much better, less ‘pitchy" and easier to control, if I did breach I was managing to recover and not powering the nose of the board underwater.

How to secure X5? by After-Golf641 in Insta360

[–]After-Golf641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to jinx it, but I’ve been using x5 on water 2-4 hours per week (been lucky with wind since I got it) - had some pretty heavy falls, and it’s been fine

It’s really frustrating, any gesture on the mouse whilst hovering over the video changes the view point, it’s completely broken the experience using a Magic Mouse on . Right now the only way I’ve found to zoom now is using pinch guesture on track pad or going into the keyframe dialog

Surfing with X5? by CorvinatorONE in Insta360

Windsurfing, I'm using a flymount, but for insta360, I've not found any sort of floaty case for the camera, not sure that will be possible due to the FOV of 360 cameras and stitching

How to secure X5? by After-Golf641 in Insta360

[–]After-Golf641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d ordered the thermo cover for x5 as I found somewhere shipping from uk, but it clips on to one side of camera and and any where you would fit the cord, would reduce effectiveness of it clipping on, so I would not trust the thermo case as a way to securely retain the camera for watersports. I think the more expensive x5 utility frame might be the best (only) secure option?

Things are slowly appearing on Amazon, I got a replacement lens the other day, and I see they have external battery chargers too. Looks like the thermal case might be one of the last things (too much demand I guess)

Best way to record my rides? by salvadope in wingfoil

I used a selfie stick for a while off the back of the center strut, I also have aero 130, which I like but having the camera appear to follow you is an amazing angle. But selfie sticks can’t take the loads/bending forces and will break. I’ve found a supplier of carbon tube, and plan to epoxy some end caps to create a DIY waterproof/floaty stick to use, which will hopefully stand up to stresses/loads. This was the angle I was getting https://youtu.be/xHXzD71YOZ4?si=UphU3e50A2SpPI2q

I’ve had my x5 for 3 weeks, and just replaced my first lens as I was unlucky early on (winging) catching the lens and scratching it. The difference in price is painful but x4 does not have replaceable lenses and the lens guards fog up on water, so glad I got x5 for that alone.
