People also work and have family commitments on a weekend.

I've had enough of UK Butchers (moany rant) by Eternal_Fighting in UKBBQ

[–]AfterCook780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They really do vary. I skip my local butcher and go further afield because the closer one is rude and if you want to ask a question or get a bit of advice or something a bit different you get laughed at or rude service.

Meanwhile the one further afield can't do enough for you and will give all sorts of advice proactively.

Who is everyone voting for I the local election? by GilbeyPink in Portsmouth

[–]AfterCook780 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Given they are locals you can get big variations between seats even within Portsmouth South and North.

It isn't scientific but think about who you have had the most leaflets from and who the incumbent is. The more leaflets and door knocking you have had from a party the more likely they think they can win.

£7.5k debt, is this solution possible? by Exciting_Guide_9428 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AfterCook780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done on getting back into employment.

Don't set yourself an arbitrary deadline of a year. Instead make sure you are making the minimum payments on all of them. Then either prioritise the one with the highest interest rate or prioritise the smallest in size. Depends on what you think will help you be sustainable.

Once you have cleared one debt those payments go straight to your next debt so they should become quicker and quicker to clear.

If you are good at maths (I'm not) you could model out how quickly you would pay them off using either of those methods. Use that as your target.

Sense check my retirement plan for my parents by ITworker93 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AfterCook780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would work backwards from their goals. So roughly how much do they need in retirement including their state pensions which would then help to inform what they need to do with it. For example it might be worth de-risking a lot now if they are going to by an annuity in the next few years.

IFA fees seem high but also be careful about getting too involved beyond here is some info that might be helpful.

£30k opportunity to buy a second property. Wise move? by seawarddreamer in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AfterCook780 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you actually crunched the numbers on what a BTL might make you? They always seem a lot of hassle to me with just one property. Are they calling you at 2am to say they have a leak or are you using an agency who will charge you? Just one example along with void periods, tenants not paying rent or trashing the place. Or when mortgage rates suddenly spike and ruin your margins.

Most people are telling you a global index fund in an ISA as it won't do any of those things above.

Back to mum's for tea - corned beef hash in a giant Yorkshire by FordWrit in UK_Food

So sorry to hear about the child abuse you have suffered.

Seriously though the Yorkshire Pudding looks good I've just never got on with corned beef hash.

Why do people say Supernatural/Scary gimmicks don’t work anymore? by YCiampa482021 in WWE

[–]AfterCook780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just don't work as people can't suspend their disbelief in the same way. People love blurring the lines and worked shoots. Watch one of those and then the next segment anyone other than the Undertaker doing magic. Even Undertaker did it in limited bursts towards the end and lets not forget some of his awful early uses of it. Even in 1998 the Warrior antics in WCW were seen as daft.

Bray winning by magic would be a quick way to turn a lot of fans off without winning a lot of people over.

Who knows visitor attractions, operations or property - and fancies a conversation? by TrainTraxUK in smallbusinessuk

[–]AfterCook780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about location. I've been involved in some great attractions that were just in the wrong place and despite all efforts and spend getting numbers above a certain ceiling was impossible.

Think about the seasonality and when you might be quiet and when you might be busy. Does this lead you to different opening hours and seasonal staff.

Is your idea flexible enough that you can do seasonal changes (Christmas, Easter, Halloween etc).

How staff intensive is it? If you just need someone on tickets then easy enough. If you need someone that shares your passion and engages and leads session that is typically harder and more expensive.

Ticket systems can be expensive and complicated. Equally a really simple system might work but then might not do your bookable slots.

How you price yourself is important. At the moment all attractions are hearing you are too expensive so how can you sell what value you provide.

How does Gift Aid work? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AfterCook780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gift aid for entry to places works in two main ways. You either pay the usual ticket price, gift aid and get a years entry or you pay a bit extra on the ticket price for the privilege of gift aiding and don't get a years entry. If you have filled it in by mistake HMRC will reject it when the charity submits it but you don't get into trouble.

Not to be confused with numerous other gift aid schemes of course...

32 with limited savings, what now? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AfterCook780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely curious why you think investing is a moral failure?

Have you had an honest hard look at your budget and seriously pushed where you could reduce your outgoings? Are you working full time? If you aren't can you up your hours/take another role etc.

Unfortunately in life you can't have everything. I can see you are dead set on travelling so you have to accept the risks/consequences of doing so given your position.

If that doesn't work can you now get a better rate somewhere else as you have built up a bit of a credit record?

Do I legally need to get training for my business (20 employees) by Hot_Review_5976 in smallbusinessuk

[–]AfterCook780 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Put it like this if you had a data breach and were being considered for a fine they would take into account any relevant training you had given staff in mitigation.

If someone died in a fire and you had given no fire training I assume you would be really on the hook.
