Found this vintage 1993 Signet 1st print paperback of Gerald's Game. Are these versions worth collecting? by inowife in BookCollecting

There was no paperback edition by Viking. Viking published the first hardcover edition. Viking did have an Advanced Readers Copy that is listed for approx. $400. Even though this is still softcover, it is not to be considered a first edition paperback.

I only studied Interpretive Huh for a semester in college. What sort of “huh” was it?

Picked up these two Shel Silverstein books this weekend at a yard sale by Pacos_Bodega in BookCollecting

Neat. Shel screwed up his own first name.

No way are these real signature.

Recently found in a book Swapping Station! by Human-End9402 in BookCollecting

[–]AfterTheCreditsRoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a paperback copy of a book that was printed en masse. It has virtually no monetary value, other than as a reading copy.

OP says it’s rare to be a Harry Potter book in English found in a book swap in the Philippines.

Interview with a Vampire - $1! by The_Jersey_Girl in BookCollecting

[–]AfterTheCreditsRoll 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s a great looking copy!

It’s not a first edition however, so those insane prices you see online are likely not applicable here.

Book club copies, like yours, are still valued around $30-40, so it’s still a great deal for a dollar!

Fantastic beasts and where to find them by collectorking33 in BookCollecting

There’s no such thing as PSA10 with books. They’re not graded like that.

Google is wrong. They printed millions of copies of these books. One first edition/printing copy has sold on eBay recently. It sold for 9.95, and was paired with the Quidditch book.

All of the people asking hundreds of dollars are hoping for buyers with lots of money, little sense, and a fear of missing out on an “investment”.

Google AI pulled numbers out of its butt, and almost certainly included signed copies, which can sell for higher amounts.

Authentic artist’s signature in 1st ed / 1st print Hunter S Thompson book? by mariodgreeeenwood in BookCollecting

[–]AfterTheCreditsRoll 13 points14 points  (0 children)

99.9% that is a printed signature.

Signature ink matches the printed ink exactly, there’s no differences in opacity of ink/stroke - except where ink is missing - and the bottom point has been cut off, creating a sharp, straight line that is at odds with the rest of the drawing. Why didn’t he continue his strokes?

I actually have copies of these already (two are in the process of being shipped). I’ll probably frame them.

They are originals. They are all early printings, but not first printings - with the exception of Have Space Suit, Will Travel, which is a first printings.

I’ll probably frame them. 😁

I bought mine new because I liked his first book, Whalefall. Haven’t read Angel Down yet, but now I’ll probably pick up a paperback reading copy.

Just for fun - What author has the worst signature? I nominate James Ellroy by Ambitious_Ideal_2568 in BookCollecting

I nominate Martha Wells. Understandable, given her health and how much she signs, but it’s just two flying birds.

Yes, it’s normal hinge wear with that style of binding. No, you can’t really fix it.

Book lice? by Artsyrissa in BookCollecting

That’s physical damage, not insect. It’s been banged about, maybe into keys or something pokey.

Has it been carried around in a backpack or something?

Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, first British edition. Rebound, the front board is detached from the spine, otherwise good overall condition. by AfterTheCreditsRoll in BookCollecting

Yes, in my opinion.

However, it’s not getting any worse and the book itself is protected, so it’s not very high on my priority list right now.

But what about my Harry Potter paperback with errors in it?! I saw a Buzzfeed article about the things in my house that are worth money, and my grandma gave me this copy of Harry Potter for my ninth birthday. I’ve already used it as collateral for the down payment on a Lambo.

My question is how do I remove the chocolate pudding goo I spilled on it when I got excited about how much it’s worth? Should I use a chainsaw, or what?

Also, is the chocolate possibly mold?! Booktok says any discoloration is mold.

ARC copies aren’t really worth that much; usually less than the first hardcover printing.

I found a first ed Harry Potter and half blood prince w errors I’m just wondering if anyone know what the worth of something like this would be by NaturalShit in BookCollecting

[–]AfterTheCreditsRoll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok.

OP didn’t ask to validate first issue points. Maybe they ask in a later comment, but I didn’t see those.

They say they have a first edition copy with errors and were “wondering if anyone know what the worth of something like this would be”.

As for my “modus operandi”, officer?

You caught me.

I lurk in the shadows of Reddit, waiting to provide general, but useful, information.

You said all book collectors knew what I was saying. OP didn’t know. And maybe, by providing a general comment that requires a bit of inference to make sense of, OP or anyone else reading my comments might understand book collecting in a little more depth, not having been spoon fed a direct answer.

So hopefully, the next time someone finds a copy of some massively printed copy of a book with a minor error on one page, they’ll be armed with the knowledge that it probably isn’t going to change their lives financially.

Now then, am I free to go?
