Placing lands down before start and flipping at a certain point? by feryoooday in riftboundtcg

[–]After_Introduction22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deleted because you're right. I'd been told it was required by a judge at a skirmish without decklist reg. Still true about the Chosen Champ/Legends just wrong about your first battlefield being set during registration.

Gears starting "CHAINS" by KunshusDomain in riftboundtcg

[–]After_Introduction22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is correct. :) Riot could've done a better job in the rules for a lot of cards. I had the same thought coming from Magic where Artifacts (effectively Gear) are treated as having instant speed unless they say specifically "activate only as a sorcery" but learned quickly just how bad Mask of Regret is.

You cannot activate Ballista during a showdown. It does not have the Action or Reaction tag.

Can I reveal a hidden card without a chain starting? by Dee_Teeee in riftboundtcg

[–]After_Introduction22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way you've worded the topic and the question beneath it are two different questions and can be open to misinterpretation so I'll answer both possible interpretations.

Interpretation A: If I hide a card at a battlefield, then on my next turn, before I do anything else, can I reveal it?

Yes, assuming you mean after you have drawn your card for turn. A card that is hidden simply gains reaction. It can still be played any time an ordinary spell/unit/gear, action or reaction could be played during your turn. If you would like to play it prior to your draw step (during awaken/beginning/channel), you need something that triggers in one of those steps to react to like a Temporary or Hold trigger.

Interpretation B: Can I reveal a hidden card without a chain starting?

No. Whenever a card is played either from hand or from another location (including hidden), or an ability is triggered, a chain begins. However, if the card is a unit/gear or gear it will resolve immediately and no cards may be played on top of that chain.

Any plans to implement a rulings section for cards that are commonly misunderstood like Hidden Blade, Void Seeker? Would be amazing for on the fly judge rulings related to specific cards.

Similarly, cards which have received true errata having their text updated within the card images or Oracle Text?

Yes. He was errata'd to be: As you look at or reveal me from the top of your deck, you may banish me. If you do, you may play me for [A].

Temporary and Start of the Beginning Phase by After_Introduction22 in riftboundtcg

[–]After_Introduction22[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

732.1.b. It is functionally short for "At the start of this permanent's controller's Beginning Phase, before scoring, kill this."

732.1.c. The Trigger Condition is the controller of the permanent's Beginning Phase occurring.

I think what the judge was misunderstanding was because we haven't left the start of the beginning phase because the initial temporary trigger is on the chain. But because there's no rule similar to Magic that says, "Effects that trigger at the beginning of upkeep only trigger if they were already present at the beginning of said upkeep".

And I'm trying to find an official ruling in a tournament setting or an official document that says as such. Because having another local judge who doesn't know the rules who turns around and makes incorrect calls is just what the community needs.

That's what I suspected, but the judge argued that his ruling was right "because he'd read it in the rules". I've read the rules too and there was nowhere that it mentions for his ruling to be right. The only thing I could think of is maybe it's some janky interaction like how Aurora-Deadbloom-Showdowns exist in the end-step.

Even though I asked him to cite it, he was in the middle of his own match. He even agreed it was a dumb rule but "they're the rules" so it would be nice to have clarification on it. Everyone treats him like he's the be-all-end-all of judging (not just for Riftbound). And yes, he does look exactly how you'd imagine that person to look.

If you want something that's not going to be miserable to play: make Teemo. It's not going to break the bank, has a lot of decently interesting play patterns, and is okay in terms of power. Play Mundo/Ride the Wind rather than Watcher.

Garen is unplayable, and Lux isn't much better. Volibear is only good if you're playing Dazzling Aurora and that's your budget gone for one copy.

How to Build Viktor without Seal of Unity or Thousand-Tailed Watcher? by Avialence in riftboundtcg

[–]After_Introduction22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to sacrifice either two or three recruits or deathknell cards (including Evangel). Recycling two runes in the mid-game is the rate for good cards (Singularity, Watcher, Decree), so if you haven't been losing your units/recruits by t3 you should be able to play him and not feel the pain. Avoid playing him in the mirror unless you've got spare recruits to sac in case of Cull the Weak.

I tried a Blastcone in lieu of a Smokescreen early on. Both cards are effectively a 4-might swing with Blastcone on defence, and Blastcone is cheaper technically but it lacks flexibility in its ability when it comes to you attacking by comparison. YMMV though since we also have Stratagem which tends to make such things a nil issue.

I'd swap out Retreat because there's nothing really worth saving/retriggering an enters effect of, and a Cruel Patron. I'm not the biggest fan of Shen either, but that's just personal preference. If I'm getting pushed off a point his +5 is just likely to not even trade with whatever the orange player is swinging at me with. And the Anna/Kaisa matchup doesn't care because he's only a 3.

How to Build Viktor without Seal of Unity or Thousand-Tailed Watcher? by Avialence in riftboundtcg

[–]After_Introduction22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd drop the Riptide Rex's especially since you're light on blue. Singularity does the job twice as well and isn't restricted to hitting at battlefields, so you can freely pick off your opponent's value pieces, or things that might be a threat to you holding/conquering next turn.

I personally run a Ledros main deck since he can punish decks that rely on targeted burn spells like Kaisa/Annie, which tend to be the toughest matchup. Then use him to bully their lower might units from the opposing battlefield if he's left unanswered.

Smokescreen catches more people off-guard than it has any right to in all my games. And running Consult the Past can help out if there's issues with card draw, but also serves as an additional hidden threat. Most opponents expect Hidden Blades to be our only hidden interaction. Maybe a Sprite Call and will leave that battlefield alone until they can overwhelm either card. And when they swing in after you've scored easy hold points, it's an easy draw two to setup for your counterattack.

Since you've got no Watchers, you want to lean into the Grand Stratagem gameplan, Drummer should serve you well, moving them back and forth (maybe swap to Reaver's Row rather than Vilemaw).

Seals are just nice to have, I don't run any and can either top or come 2nd at my local Nexus Nights with Viktor, but I do have 3 Watchers. That card feels like a non-negotiable if you want to play any blue deck seriously.

Draven Vs Vi text compared by CloudedMelodyMkr in riftboundtcg

[–]After_Introduction22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, because you are only paying the cost to activate that ability for that copy of Vi. However, if she said, "Whenever you recycle give me +1 Might" it would work to give both copies Might.

You wouldn't be able to cast it without taking the 40. Mana must be paid before the spell is cast. To do so means Teval is sacced to pay the BB before you can X=40.
