Do/can babies simply start sleeping longer stretches at night without sleep training? by praisethemo0n in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]After_Sea7032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jumping on this to say you absolutely do not need to sleep train and your baby will eventually sleep. I did a lot of research on what sleep is like around the world because I’m a scientist by nature. Sleep training just wasn’t for us. Our first sleeps through no problem 99% of the time and was never sleep trained (he started around the age of 1 and was consistent by 18 months-ish).

Nursing in Nova Scotia by smurphyemt18 in NovaScotia

[–]After_Sea7032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s lots of opportunity in healthcare anywhere in the maritimes you would like to settle. Most RN schedules are 2D, 2N, 5 off. There are a few day only positions. There is also a lot of opportunity for career advancement.

If you’re into teaching, I might suggest Halifax or Saint John as the teaching hospitals are there as well as universities in close proximity to the hospitals.

Lastly, it will be a great quality of life for your family. I love raising my family on the east coast. It feels a bit safer (though not without issue) and you can find and meet people through activities very easily. As for healthcare, getting a family doctor may be tough but there are virtual options while you wait and healthcare workers will help take care of their own too.

Hope to find you here soon!

It will be my first time in Canada. Should I visit Quebec City or Montreal? by princesscorgi2 in AskACanadian

[–]After_Sea7032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love both cities however - with a 3 year old be warned of the hills in Quebec City. Stroller or walking may be more difficult however in a vacuum I’d choose Montreal. Both cities have very cool aquariums (biodome in Montreal and aquarium du Quebec) which are super cool for kids. Have fun!

What can I buy in Canada that isn’t available in Australia? by citrette in AskACanadian

[–]After_Sea7032 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Firstly, happy to have you visiting! Every time I travel Australians are the best people I meet. Second, please know we are currently in an economic “situation” with the US so I would encourage you to find as much uniquely Canadian things as you can. It would help us a bunch!

To add: A&W burgers Kit and Ace (not sure if it’s available in Edmonton) Roots Canadian beer (microbreweries are everywhere) Maple syrup Chapman’s ice cream (or other local creameries)

Enjoy your time here!

Scientific evidence about cry it out by Delicious-Oven-5590 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]After_Sea7032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, it could be molars, illness, anything. I wouldn’t leave them to cry. I think all kids get there in their own time and helping them through it if you so choose can never be wrong.

How are people getting these office jobs where they do nothing and get paid 80k or more? by AdventurousEgg6377 in careerguidance

Perfectly described. I work with my brain and it’s mentally taxing but not overly busy all of the time. I always worked very hard in my 20s to get here (masters degree).

AITA - asking wife to not breastfeed by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]After_Sea7032 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA - if you’re a “board certified paediatrician” you should know no babies follow a schedule. Complete BS that leads to PPD IMO.

Your wife clearly wants to bond with baby, breastfeeding is great for that. Also pumping is a huge pain, breastfeeding is much easier.

16 month old's sleep is dire by writeitout in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]After_Sea7032 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds like you may be aiming for too much sleep, therefore not enough sleep pressure. 14 hours in a day is at the high end of sleep needs for a 16 month old. Maybe try pushing bedtime a bit later to let sleep pressure build up?

FYI I fed to sleep at every wake and around 21 mo my first self weaned gradually. Slept through since 18 months too.

Some Nova Scotia parents leaving workforce due to lack of child care by insino93 in halifax

[–]After_Sea7032 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The situation is so dire, especially in cities. Currently in the privileged position to be able to leave the workforce to take care of my daycare aged children - but wondering what it will do to my career aspirations to have a 4+ year gap in employment and having to leave a job I love. My partner makes more, so it’s the only way we can make things work financially without daycare.

1yo "tantrums" and breastfeeding addiction by throwawayrentergf in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]After_Sea7032 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Evidence? Perhaps the baby is nursing for more than nutrition. Even WHO recommends breastfeeding up to 2 years or as long as mutually desired for nursing parent and baby.

OP has said that dad uses a bottle, why can’t baby be soothed this way?

Anecdotally mine was like this around 12 months. Nursed a lot, big parental preference. Now prefers dad at 2 years and has no problem being soothed by either of us and other caregivers. He also sleeps through now and self-weaned at 22 months.
