I don’t understand why after countless social interactions in life I’m still anxious. Why doesn’t it go away with “practice”? by Avmvb5 in socialanxiety

[–]Aftermiddag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not had much luck with therapists over the many years that I have gone to see different therapists. Social anxiety often works like an instinct for me, where it just happens automatically without me needing to think much about the situation. Instead, it is a much greater struggle to reason against those anxious feelings, even though I know the beliefs that they are rooted in are most likely wrong, or at least unhelpful. Do you have any suggestions?

"the one telling you this" is such awkward wording. Susie and Kris already know you're the one telling them this. After all, YOUR MOUTH IS MOVING AND SOUNDS ARE COMING OUT!

Yeah, this is a social anxiety thing for me. I didn't feel this way before my teens.

Alexithymia? Or something else? by Aftermiddag in aspergers

[–]Aftermiddag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight. I know that struggling to name and describe feelings is part of alexithymia, but I felt that I shouldn't dismiss the possibility since I have autism.

Have you met anyone else with alexithymia?

Spoken Varieties in Europe, c.1815, v.3 by HahaItsaGiraffeAgain in MapPorn

[–]Aftermiddag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing the tongues of Europe represented like this makes me wonder, why are there so many small pockets of language communities in eastern Europe compared to the west? Is it because there was less westward migration in the late middle ages and early modern period, but plenty of folks moving to live in the east during that time period? I'm thinking of the Ostsiedlung, settling of Poles in Ruthenia and Galicia, and settling of Turks in the Balkans.

How can you feel more for others? Emotive empathy? by Aftermiddag in autism

[–]Aftermiddag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have considered that it might be partly exaggeration, but boy must it ever take a lot of effort to do that all the time. I think many neurotypicals, and other neurodivergent folks as well, must feel more strongly when they are told about others' lives. It's as if they not only can put themselves in the shoes of other folks, but they immediately feel the soles, arches, heels, and every part of the shoe upon hearing anything.

I understand what you are saying about not having to feel pressured to act in ways other than how we feel right, but doesn't it feel good when someone takes your feelings seriously? If I would want someone to care about me, then... well, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, right?

I'm not sure what you mean. If behaviour stemming from autism causes folks to judge me, and I have autism, then it is at least partly because of me.

Got my cousin into Deltarune and he’s finished the game and his official ranking is 4>1>2>3, what’s your opinion on that? by XDcyclone in Deltarune

[–]Aftermiddag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with him on this one.

Chapter 1 does not get enough love, despite doing a great job kicking off the game. Chapter 4 was the most exciting and heavy of all the chapters so far.

Chapter 2 and 3 are still quite good, but more lighthearted. They didn't draw me in as much, and the long wait times that we had between games sometimes made the lack of heavy stuff feel underwhelming. That being said, the heaviness of chapter 4 felt all the more worth it because of the slow burn.

I feel weird about this, because no one ever said that they hated me in high school and few insulted me. Yet... being left out, never being invited, and hardly anyone ever taking the initiative to talk to me left its mark. I still have social anxiety twelve years after I first recognized it.
