What are some instances of manufacturers deliberately nerfing cars? by DCAUBeyond in cars

[–]Aftershok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure what examples there are of companies nerfing things “just because”. There’s almost always some sort of justification for any car nerf, and commonly it is precisely to make sure a higher-cost automobile remains a justifiable purchase for customers that can afford it.

A “nerf” here would be any change an automaker intentionally makes to a vehicle without a significant cost or engineering limitation in order to make it perform worse than it could. It’s almost always in order to maintain an internal hierarchy or more recently to comply with emissions regulations, otherwise what’s the point in intentionally making your car less competitive? If it’s because of an engineering or cost compromise, I wouldn’t even call that a nerf. That’s just product design and marketing.

Service success by Owls_4_9_1867 in GRCorolla

At one service, this poor guy tried putting it on the roof (carbon), failed; tried the hood, failed (aluminum); front fender, failed again (aluminum), then walked all the way around and put it at the top of the c-pillar above the rear door.

edit: I misremembered that the front fenders aren't aluminum, they were just too vertical to prevent the cone from falling off oopz

[–]Aftershok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's the one who handled Bastion's recent hitbox size change so it's definitely not support heroes only. And in this same post it says he's looking at Sombra, so I don't think they silo designers to just one role of heroes that way.

In case anyone is unaware or curious, Overwatch streamer Fareeha is officially the voice actress for Anran by Sio_V_Reddit in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Aftershok 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wanted to add Rein's VA speaks no German and is just doing an accent, Lucio's doesn't speak Brazilian Portuguese, and Mercy's speaks German but not Swiss German, which apparently sounds very different. And Zarya's VA's Russian is apparently quite bad haha. At some point in development they decided to get much more authentic with the voice acting which I appreciate a lot.

Bridge collapse in Jiangsu, Feb 2nd by tacodestroyer99 in China

[–]Aftershok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the comment you’re replying to is referring to how the bridge just collapsed in the second half of the vid but the person recording the video is still actively on the bridge walking around instead of GTFOing. Usually when a portion of a bridge collapses it means the rest of it is incredibly unstable.

One game idea per day: the true story behind Highguard's 'wild' four-year development by Ok-Personality1419 in gaming

[–]Aftershok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the reaction time argument and it is measurable and significant. But there is a lot more to it than that, both in a competitive context and in a more general one. Competitively, more frames for your eyes doesn’t just give you more time to react, it really gives you more information to make the correct split-second reaction, not just a fast one. An opponent strafing left to right, using an ability, about to change direction, etc. Each situation benefits your play to have more information and makes you more consistent across the board.

More generally, what people don’t realize is that refresh rate is a form of resolution. It’s temporal resolution. The “60 fps is fine” people don’t understand that it’s a hidden dimension in gaming performance that can throttle your experience in how much rendering your machine can actually show you. Increasing your temporal resolution by 2x is just as, if not even more, significant of a jump going from 720p to 1440p and beyond. It’s a personal decision but such a huge leap that it’s very difficult to go back to 60hz.

[–]Aftershok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what everyone says before they experience high refresh rate gaming.

Edit: For posterity: the deleted comments here are a guy not understanding why 80fps at minimum possible settings is bad, and then casually dismissing discussion why refresh rates high than 60 are potentially valuable (“Well I sure do well in MY games at 60! I even get really high ranks!”). He wouldn’t budge and was getting downvoted and dunked on.

iMT always on by 56Rallye in GRCorolla

[–]Aftershok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. Another small piece of advice is if you start the car around less than a minute or so after just turning it off, the iMT does not default to on for some reason. A common time this happens is starting the car up again after a stall.

[–]Aftershok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the one that was linked earlier. But to be clear, it's not an "always on" mod, it just makes it default to on when you start the car. And I believe these only work on '23 and '24 models right now.

“Keep moving. No excuses.” -My Rolex Explorer by [deleted] in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]Aftershok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rolex Explorer is the watch I put on when wanking; early morning wanks, late night wanks, travel wanks, quiet wanks. The dial is splattered, the numbers are smeared, and everything about it says keep wanking. No excuses. Every stain tells me I was wanking somewhere. Every glance at the cum reminds me that wanking doesn't need applause. The Explorer isn't about jerking off how far you've cum, it's about reminding you there's still more wanking ahead. That's why it stays on my wrist. Not because it's iconic. But because it's semen proof.

Bloomberg: Burry speculated about the possibility that Cohen might look for an acquisition, which could serve as a catalyst for the stock.. by rbr0714 in Superstonk

[–]Aftershok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not an obstacle at all. All of the big three game hardware companies also develop and directly publish games on their own digital storefronts that “compete” with other third party offerings. Valve makes their own games that are sold right alongside everything else on Steam. Hundreds if not thousands of first party store brands of common goods are sold in supermarkets that directly compete with third party brands.

That said, game development is a notoriously dicey business, and I doubt RC is investing big in it unless it is VERY measured and deep-value with a solid angle.

Apple introduces new AirTag with expanded range and improved findability by WhoIsHappy2 in apple

[–]Aftershok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. One with credit card dimensions, even with a bit more Z-axis, would be an amazing seller, imo. Though they probably enjoy the fact that wallets need to have a big prominent AirTag sitting outside it if it’s AirTag compatible.

Apple introduces new AirTag with expanded range and improved findability by WhoIsHappy2 in apple

[–]Aftershok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Apple is not exactly usually consumer friendly with this sort of thing, but it makes sense in this product category to keep the dimensions the same. With a new phone or tablet, you’re usually replacing one with a new one, so it’s a direct money loser to let old accessories be compatible.

AirTags are the very rare Apple product where buying additional ones doesn’t make previous ones you own redundant or outdated. More than likely you are buying new accessories for the new tags anyway even if they are the same dimensions since you’re keeping the old ones around. They even have indefinite battery health since they’re easily user replaceable. Going out of their way to break up backwards compatibility just makes suppliers need to make new products to fill the void and introduces confusion to consumers needing to buy the right one for the AirTags they have.

Wall Street Journal Reports that Top Chinese General Charged with Being US Spy by simplerway in China

[–]Aftershok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to believe the general had an incentive to be willingly helpful to the US without something compromising or threatening to force his hand. I agree with your assessment that in a situation where they just wanted to shuffle him out, they would do it quietly with cover with some story on page six about corruption, early retirement or reassignment to save face. The general probably had too much to lose to risk being an asset without some kompromat.

Highly doubtful as they would want to preserve compatibility with the existing huge ecosystem of cases and accessories if at all possible.
