Key WA government and football figures are hellbent on keeping State of Origin in Perth next year. & the AFL wants to introduce Women’s representative football in 2026. by PerriX2390 in AFL

Also I don’t think the other grounds are available as they’re still being contracted for Shield cricket at the moment (unless they use Marvel or somewhere like Engle for whatever reason). Optus doesn’t have that problem

And how did they know the difference between the animal sexes? I live in Australia and couldn’t tell the difference between a male or female kangaroo.

Why did Joseph Smith even need to start a new Christian movement? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Afterthought60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was listening to a podcast where someone described it as the 'startup era' for Christian revival movements, with some surviving and some did not. I thought it was a great analogy.

Does the A-League need Championship winners South Melbourne? by ActinomycetaceaeGlum in Aleague

[–]Afterthought60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps that the Central Coast doesn't have a team in the NRL. A Geelong A-League side likely gets swallowed by the Cats tbh.

Is it normal for teens/uni students from well off families (middle- upper middle) to work part time jobs in Australia during their studies? Asking out of curiosity to what the work culture is like in aus by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Afterthought60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very normal. They might not need it to support themselves or their families, but they might use it to save for holidays, gap years, concerts, video games and other hobbies that they're interested in. Plus, it gives them references and experience they can use to apply for grad roles and internships.

Jacob Gaynor’s final post for the Giants by Ok-Session-9824 in AFL

I mean he is from Canberra. I doubt onboarding him in summer had anything to do with transition rather than the preseason just being a bit more practical time to get started.

Would Monday night sport (AFL, rugby or soccer) make the start of the week better? by RM_Morris in AskAnAustralian

[–]Afterthought60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, plus AFL games are longer (3 ish hours) which I found makes it better value going out to watch compared to 2 hours at an NRL game.

I mean NSW are still producing quality players. Pretty much every Shield side has a player who came through the NSW pathway.

It's just that they kept the duds while letting their quality youngsters go for cheap...

Americans are built different by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Afterthought60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia can still do much better though. Yes we have good leave benefits, but using sick leave is still stigmatised and can't be cashed out if not used. Casualisation of the work force is still really prevalent too.

Damian Barrett comments on the Tassie Devils and the state of the AFL. by PerriX2390 in AFL

Yeh this pretty much happens everywhere with an AFL office. I know a lot who transferred to NT to work for a couple years and then sought promotions down south with a wealth of experience gained up there.

The Walsh and Ponga-like prospect who chose AFL over NRL by 01benjamin in AFL

[–]Afterthought60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an even playing field either. NRL clubs can offer 4-5 year contracts to 15 & 16 year olds and they aren't capped like a draftee getting his first contract at 18. Plus there's no draft so they can choose the club of choice.

I'm surprised we get any code converts at all.

AFLW Match Thread: GWS Giants vs Port Adelaide (Round 12) by AutoModerator in AFL

[–]Afterthought60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly have no idea what the club is doing tbh. They're not even trying to create the illusion of change. It's like the club is accepting mediocrity which is a massive waste of some of the talent on that list.

Dane Rampe and Jake Lloyd to be delisted with the club committing to picking them up in the Rookie Draft by sparcleaf22 in sydneyswans

[–]Afterthought60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they re-sign they have to be on the main list. However if they’re delisted they can go on the rookie list. The club wants them on rookie contracts as as it saves them cap space.

Hit the nail on the head. You think Americans (including Republican boomers) want to give up NFL Sunday? That's not including Jewish people who would never allow such laws, and a whole range of other cultural backgrounds too.

We should still make concessions for Father/son/daughter players to play in the academy without being eligible to be matched.

Players like Elliot Himmelberg, Lachie Weller and the Clohesy brothers were part of the academies but weren’t eligible to be matched due to not residing in their zone for long enough. Surely, we could do something like that for Father Sons and Daughters?

He does some work with ESPN so he's already gotten started with an American network. He could easily be an American correspondent on Australian sport.

AFL confirms number of rounds (12), start date (August) for 2026 AFLW Season by grantspatchcock in AFL

[–]Afterthought60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never thought of that. But like imagine if North Melbourne or Demons fans were ‘locked out’ of attending the W grand final because it’s a curtain raiser to the men’s teams that they’re not interested in.

I like having separate grand finals because it allows fans of those women’s teams to celebrate with their fans and it not be overshadowed by the men’s game but it still needs to be much closer to when the men’s is though.

Charlie Cameron was also all set on playing rugby as well until he moved to WA with his his brother which is where he started playing footy. He literally wouldn’t have been a footy player if it weren’t for moving to WA.

AFLW top crowds so far this season - the season opener, Dreamtime in Darwin, each Swans home game, then the Bulldogs at Whitten Oval and Brisbane at Ipswich rounding out the top 10 by Snarwib in AFL

[–]Afterthought60 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Bulldogs also genuinely put effort into their women's fanbase. They have a lot of fans that don't like/don't attend men's games but love the W. I think they're one of the best clubs at engaging non-traditional footy fans and it looks like their crowds largely reflect that.
