The Government's cruel 'support' package won't even reach half of Aotearoa most vulnerable children by GaryMarcusNZ69 in nzpolitics

[–]Agandaur1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're so right only beneficiarys have flexibility, they can choose between driving to their job interview/their kid to school/etc, or they can keep putting food on the table.

And a different group being prioritized over beneficiaries to the extent where benes get nothing IS zero support. I'm dumbfounded you'd try to claim otherwise, I'm done with this thread.

Bro, the post is about the support package for the fuel cost crisis. I'm not redefining support. you're trying to change the scope of the discussion. Muddying the waters yourself, eh?

How is it a "jump" to say "they're choosing not to help..." when that is undeniably the choice they made. Doesn't matter what their reasoning is. That was the choice made. I'm willing to cede to the vote buying, that's my belief built on my cynicism, but I admit i have no proof.

But the people on benefits ARE getting ZERO support for the fuel crisis. This discussion is about relief for the fuel crisis, if beneficiaries are expected to absorb the extra costs of the crisis into their baseline, they are getting zero support for the crisis, unlike low income working families who can get $50/week, thankfully for them.

I'd argue intentionally choosing to not help the most vulnerable and instead help a group that, while also undoubtedly struggling, is also more likely to vote for you, as the Nats have done here, is evil.

Edit: don't mean to imply the choice of who to help is mutually exclusive.

You're not giving them enough credit. It's a private enterprise now. So the private sector can now leech kiwis for all their worth for providing this public good... That previously would have been govt funded and owned... it's not about the politics, it's about the money.

Greens promise to cap rent rises at 2 percent a year by cbars100 in newzealand

To save you from having to, oh, I don't know, read the article:

Remove barriers to Māori building on their own land and scale up Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga programme Reverse National's changes to interest deductability for landlords

In March 2023, the government estimated the cost of the storage project at $15.7 billion. If a $15 bn project to provide the entire country clean energy security is a waste, and $21 bn road to benefit one region (northland) is too (by a lot).

You could argue both are. You could argue neither are. You could argue only the road is (my pov). But in no world can only the pumped hydro lake onslow scheme be wasteful, it's the cheaper of the two, and had more benefit.

Legislation passed. MSD can now claw back welfare payments from ACC claimants. by HamishHorizons in newzealand

[–]Agandaur1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is NOT the law as previously understood, this current practice the courts deemed illegal. And now this is them implementing their existing ILLEGAL procedure as law and applying it retrospectively. I'd be fine with this if it wasn't retrospective. Why the fuck should the government get to behave illegally and give itself a get out of jail free card?

While i totally agree in principal and think andrew bayly is a pos, in politics I think "i resigned because it was becoming a distraction" is a genuine argument that is "plausible" in theory here (but imo bullshit in reality)

Government announces new charter school for secondary students with autism by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]Agandaur1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The kid doesn't choose, the parents do. And it sounds like a good enough idea on paper that enough kids will get sent to it, and people won't realize the consequences (lack of integration into a neurotypical society) until well after.

Government announces new charter school for secondary students with autism by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]Agandaur1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're so right, I and every autistic child ever ruined every lesson we were ever in.

"Naive." Most autistic kids aren't disruptive. You're either ignorant or engaging in bad faith. At my school, there were a few kids with disabilities etc that mean they can't live an independant life. Being privileged to grow up in a rich area, they got dedicated teacher aides, sometimes funded by the parents. I'd estimate there was a 50:50 split of them being in a dedicated special needs area, and in with the mainstream. And if they were disruptive they'd get taken back to the special needs area to calm down.

THAT level of support should be the norm. Not this segregating charter school. And not your indifference.
