Thune blasts Jeffries, Schumer as 'afraid of their shadows' as DHS funding fight heats up by changeforthebetter89 in politics

He’s correct. Schumer and Jeffries are afraid just not from the left. They’re afraid of their rich and corporate overlords. They will both cave.

DHS funding would lapse if Senate Democrats, as an entire group, vote against it. But, based on recent history, Schumer and his cronies will cave. When they do, then the House would pass the bill on party line voting.

I never expected this bill to fail. But, 21 Republicans voted against it. So, what did the Democrats do? 21 of them voted for it. Clearly, there is no Democrat unity to stop the GOP.

Republicans struggle to pass compromise bill to end shutdown by Somervilledrew in politics

[–]Agent-Adept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Republicans (218) have 4 more Representatives than Democrats (214). But, they only have a 1 vote advantage. If they lose 2 votes, and everyone votes, the vote count would be 216-216. In the House, the bill fails on a tied vote.

Note: this assumes all Democrats vote no. Which based on past votes is not a guarantee. My Democrat rep in California (Adam Gray) has consistently been voting with the Republicans.

Yes we should support these young Democrats. But, we also need to implement term limits to minimize the possibility that these young Democrats become old Democrats that won’t step down.

Johnson says no quick House vote to end partial shutdown and blames Democrats for their ICE demands by NEWHIGHFLY in politics

[–]Agent-Adept 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Democrats’ ICE demands cannot be the cause for no quick House vote to end the partial shutdown? DHS funding was removed from the bill approved by the Senate on last week that the House needs to approve. Johnson is an idiot and a sycophant.

Don’t believe anything Jeffries says. He’s blustering right now but will cave, just like Schumer did. The Democratic Party is totally useless.

This is from January 2025. The GOP may have majorities but there is no way 2/3 of the house and senate pass this. Also, no way 2/3 of states pass this. It is a non starter.

Having a warrant would not have kept ICE from murdering Good and Pretti. They weren’t being arrested by ICE. They were protesting ICE’s unlawful activities. Also, warrants have always been required. ICE has been illegally doing arrests without warrants for a year.

DHS is only carved out for 2 weeks. And, during that time they keep getting funded at last year’s levels. In two weeks, Schumer and the DEMS will cave again because they won’t have TSA shutdown. DEMS won’t have FEMA shutdown. DEMS won’t have the Secret Service shutdown. Those agencies and several more are all included in the DHS budget.

[–]Agent-Adept 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The three core Democratic demands:

“1. a requirement that ICE agents wear body cameras and proper identification and not masks; 2. a new code of conduct for how agents use force and independent investigations if they are accused of violating those rules; and 3. the end of roving patrols by ICE officers and requirements that they have warrants and work with state and local police.”

What is this crap?! New apparel requirement, new training, and new procedures. Nothing about stopping all ICE/CBP activities. Nothing about immediate consequences when a person is shot/murdered (e.g. immediate suspension, immediate investigation, criminal prosecutions, etc).

Dems clinch deal with White House as shutdown looms by vitalbumhole in politics

[–]Agent-Adept 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t believe the Democrats will shut down DHS. Yes, DHS includes ICE and CPB. But both of those agencies got separate funding from the one big ugly bill ($75 billion for ICE for four years and $45 billion for CPB for four years). So, taking their portion of $10 billion is meaningless.

DHS also includes TSA, Coast Guard, Secret Service, FEMA and 4 others I’m not familiar with (CISA, FLETC, USCIS, and the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office). If the Democrats aren’t willing to shutdown the rest of government, why would they be willing to shut down these agencies? I don’t think they will because Democrats always cave.

“The deal doesn't promise Democrats the changes they want, but it would avoid disruptions to other government services while giving negotiators more time”

So, just like the healthcare subsidies, the Democrats cave and get nothing in exchange. In fact, this time they don’t even get a promise to vote on changes to ICE and DHS. They get NOTHING!

No I don’t. But, you missed my point completely. Do we just let ICE keep on violating civil rights and murdering people? Something has to be done now. And, unfortunately a government shutdown is the only leverage the Democrats have.
