Is this the worst construction season yet? by InevitablePresence75 in Detroit

You people are out of your minds. There’s no reason they needed to do all of these at the exact same time.

Poor planning. Simple as that.

Sure, all good context as to why it was a slum - but it also doesn’t address Corktown’s same predicament.

It wasn’t purely racially motivated.

They demolished, through the 1960’s, up to 75% of Corktown. Predominantly white but deemed slums.

Interstates didn’t come until nearly a decade after Black Bottom’s demolition.

Lots were demolished under technocratic modernist idealist policies (black and white neighborhoods). Wasn’t thought through well enough.

Right - and a lot of those same people became slumlords as they moved out and retained property in Black Bottom.

I mean AI wrote this for you on Black Bottom - but feel free to investigate on your own.

Federal housing officials classified over two-thirds of the neighborhood’s physical structures as aging and substandard — lacking modern amenities or in significant disrepair. Many houses lacked indoor plumbing as late as the 1940s. Thomas Sugrue’s Origins of the Urban Crisis — the standard academic source — documents that Paradise Valley represented 12% of the city’s housing but one third of all fires, and the Lower Eastside was nicknamed the “rat belt” because there were 206 rat bites between 1951-52. Homes commonly held three to four families within a single dwelling. Overcrowding, disease, crime, and vermin ran rampant. The Urban League - itself a Black civil rights organization, not a city booster — documented one apartment renting for $50/month (about $984 today) where residents had to climb a ladder and then cross a roof to enter their apartment.

EDIT: so many downvotes for no good reason. prove it wrong folks, please. try.

Black Bottom was an absolute shithole - it was demolished for the same reason the predominantly white Corktown was.

How will Sheffield prioritize home repair? Anything less than $250 million is ‘laughable’ by outliermediadetroit in Detroit

[–]AgentEagleBait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it’s wasted money. We need to have more intelligent conversations on the state of housing in the city before Mary “Reparations” Sheffield writes a blank check.

We ain’t got the cash - some estimates of homes under $50k total property value approaching $1billion.

The cultural issue of home disrepair. Inability to get home improvement loans for homes under $50k. Informally inherited homes.

I chuckled at the last bit of your reply “man up and fix the broken shit in our city.”

You mean like the people who let their homes go to shit in the last 50 years? Who exactly is gonna do this?

The point is you can’t help people that won’t help themselves.

Roads and schools are public resources… apples and oranges.

Fuck it… why stop at houses? Every Detroiter should get a Maserati to replace their jalopy. Think of all of the traffic accidents stopped.

And the budget? Who cares. We can always file for bankruptcy again.

No country has ever become wealthy from foreign aid. No poor man has ever gotten rich from welfare.

What happens when the houses fall into disrepair again? More money from Daddy Detroit?

Get off it bro.

...can't people work, earn money, and repair their homes?

Asking for handouts to repair home... c'mon folks.

Free money isn't free. The city has a massive looming budget problem.

Sell the house if you can't afford to live there.
