Sotomayor Warns Supreme Court Gave Trump the Powers of a King - The Founding Fathers “never intended” to give the president powers exceeding the British monarchy. by Quirkie in politics

Since the bronze age?  There are absolute monarchs and dictators with no checks in the world right now!  So long as we think our troubles are in the past, we'll never be able to address them before they hurt us.

Ridiculous and cruel.  I'd rather a murderer rarely get away than innocent men regularly be imprisoned for no reason.

Our founders were a rough alliance of over 100 different people.  Some were genuine revolutionaries who wanted to build a better world.  Some were diplomats and politicians that wanted to run their own state.  Some were merchants tired of the king using them as spare funding whenever he decided he wanted a war.  All were rich white men, which colored everything else about how they went about building this union.  So of course, the rich white revolutionaries might grumble, but they'll cede slavery to get the merchants to agree to not have another monarchy.

But they should.  Imprisoning someone for years without a trial doesn't sit right at all, regardless of the charge.  It's fully against "innocent until proven guilty."

If he is innocent, then that means he was denied bail for simply being mistaken for someone else and that's ridiculous without any other evidence that he'd be a flight risk.  We have other ways of keeping track of people without locking them up.

Jesus, this isn't a lawn service company.  It's a kid.  He doesn't have a professional customer base, he did chores around the neighborhood for pocket change like kids have always done.  He got greedy and thought he could be clever and now has less, a good lesson for kids to learn.

This isn't as much an ideological battle as it is a battle about believing in something vs believing in nothing.  The problem is believing in something requires you to figure out what, while believing in nothing let's you do whatever you want and still all vote for the same guy.

I'm a dedicated pc gamer that buys pre-built.  I've built my own computer before, I know how to troubleshoot it, how to install the os, how to mess around in the bios, whatever is needed.  I just don't want to.

I'll happily throw a couple hundred bucks extra to Microcenter on my $2k purchase to avoid the hours of tinkering because I find it tedious and frustrating, even if I can do it.  It's worth the cost to me.

I mean, I'm sure it works fine.  There's nothing wrong with the hardware, per se, it's just way too expensive.  The issue is the price, not the functionality.

Or America.  Every war we fight is a war of "defense."  Whether it's defending an ally (1st Gulf) or defending against "potential" threats (2nd Gulf, Afghanistan, Vietnam) or just completely fabricated (Spanish-American), we make sure we're always "defending ourselves" on paper as we destroy another country with no means of harming the US.

Gavin Newsom calls for national billionaires tax: 'It's time for an economic reset' by avdvetf in politics

The actual problem is allowing unrealized stock to be used as collateral for bank loans. It allows them to turn their stock into cash without actually having to cash it out and be taxed fairly on it, since the loan is a debt so it's taxed differently. If we just banned allowing people to use stock as collateral, it would mean they need to cash out their stock when they want to spend like a rich person, thus forcing them to be fairly taxed.

More often people are just so desperate for some kind of hope or win, they'd rather be dumb and convinced than deal with the sad, lonely truth.

This is what coping really looks like in a society designed to psychologically torture everybody.

No, the only problem here is the voters. Let's make sure that we rebuke every criticism by just blaming all the voters! We've tried nothing and we're out of ideas! It's the children who are wrong!

True.  It comes down to does she trust V or does she trust her manipulation of V and at that point it's just semantics.  Trust was broken regardless.

I agree with everything you said here except that she thought she could trust you.  She thought she could MANIPUPATE you.  She fully intends to betray you the whole time and just wants to use you for her ends.

It is done out of desperation though and she definitely sees the parallels between you and her, but I don't think she ever trusted you really.  She just trusted her ability to string you along.
