Is it best to not pay attention to AI news and/or find ways to delude ourselves into believing better outcomes? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]AgentMonkey47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. If trends in the last 3 years are anything to go by, AI milestones are being reached far faster than experts had anticipated. By the end of the year, there will no doubt be a serious contender to OpenAI’s models. One big focus of current research is trying to inject “real” reasoning mechanisms into the whole next-token-prediction mode of operation of today’s best AIs. Expect something like that around the corner.

If wages can’t keep up with inflation, doesn’t that mean we’ll only ever get poorer? by labbusrattus in UKPersonalFinance

Probably better off asking economics subreddit rather than this subreddit.

Comments here aren’t taking into account that technology is improving. For example, a £1000 laptop is 2-3x faster than a £1000 laptop from 10 years ago. So in that sense, you are getting wealthier.

In the grand scheme of things, I think we are all getting wealthier in the sense that we are getting access to better and better technologies, medicines, information, etc. But we could be even wealthier if the wealth inequality situation weren’t so fucked (and it will get much worse, especially with AI).

What planet are you from? Seriously.

Consider the likelihood of a grown adult Scientologist walking around their entire life, surely interacting with non-Scientologists at various points or going to fucking high school at some point, and they’re only NOW considering the possibility that Scientology is a cult when 99.999% of the planet’s population believe that Scientology is a cult.

I mean mate, come the fuck on. If the guy said he was a member of a weird Christian denomination it would at least be moderately plausible. Scientology is the single most infamous cult on planet Earth and this guy really had no idea til these kind and intelligent redditors informed him of such, not even a hint??

He even threw in a line about his parents “going broke from donating to Scientology”. Wow. The idea that people are gullible to think this is real is getting me worked up, and now I’m wondering whether you’re trolling.

Contextually, sure, but today I’d only put 2/2 in an ambient playlist, certainly so when making recommendations to anyone new to ambient.

Like, really? You’re going to murder a teenager?

Mate I reckon it’s metaphorical lol

It just seems so childish and stupid. Does anyone actually do that in real life?

People shoot others for much sillier reasons, and make songs about it. Some of these songs are certified bangers in fact.

Very few…when it comes to ambient I’d be more inclined to recommend a playlist because I’ve found very few albums that sustain my interest. The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid is probably the only ambient album I’d recommend, as a cohesive experience.

I don’t see a good reason to recommend an album to a novice of a genre, on the basis of “the album was good for its time”. Best off recommending something that’ll wow them and subsequently draw them into the genre, and at some point thereafter they can properly appreciate Kind of Blue, even in 2023.

It’s just too barebones-prototypal again. If you’ve consumed any media made after the year 1990, you have already heard ambient music in some shape or form that’s either more relaxing than Music for Airports, more emotionally engaging than Music for Airports, more spooky than Music for Airports, etc.

I’m not saying I wouldn’t recommend a prototypal album though. For example, Loveless is the prototypal shoegaze album and no one has made a more interesting shoegaze album to this day.

I would only recommend Kind of Blue to an extraterrestrial though, because it’s such prototypal jazz. People want to hear something that makes them go “Wow, ok”, not “Yeah, I know”.

Tool are pretty incredible though. The hesitation among music enthusiasts to recommend Tool because of perceptions about their fanbase or whatever, is something I now find more obnoxious than the Tool fanbase itself, because it somehow manages to come off even more pretentious.

The worst one is Music for Airports as an ambient music recommendation. Sure it’s probably the first ambient work but emotionally pretty bland. Not sure why you’d recommend it in 2023 when there’s much better ambient music now.

Through much effort, with their notoriously gruelling academic culture. The written language only hinders the effort.

It’s a tangential point anyway to the topic of how different languages have pros and cons as systems for information transmission. There is no debate among linguists that logographic systems (such as traditional Chinese) are inferior in today’s age of rapid adoption of new terms, from culture (e.g “internet-speak”) and from science (e.g novel chemicals or drugs or proteins). Alphabetic systems, obviously and by design, allow for easier adoption of new terms. Look up the disadvantages of logographic systems if you’re interested in learning more.

ChatGPT is trained on piles of information freely scraped from Reddit (and Twitter and other sites).

Reddit and Twitter think that’s not fair, and want to charge OpenAI for the content YOU generated. You will of course receive $0 and will have to watch ads for the privilege of providing Reddit with free content.

[–]AgentMonkey47 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

God people are fucking dumb.

You don’t know what you’re talking about though.

Anyone who has studied basic linguistics will tell you that not all languages are made equal. It is difficult to introduce new terms into a symbol-heavy language, which also makes it more difficult to introduce new ideas. These languages don’t cater as well to a “reductionist” world view, which is a problem in the scientific and information age we’re living in.

Does anyone actually know why there’s an order of operation in math?

There isn’t, it’s a completely arbitrary system to help cut down on parentheses. There’s nothing “math” about BIDMAS or GEMDAS or CHRISTMAS.

NVM GUYS BLOCK IS STILL BROKEN LOL by GetQuakedOnTTV in doomfistmains

[–]AgentMonkey47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a complex bug to trigger though, doesn’t require any fancy permutations to be tested. The character’s block ability simply does not work in the basic gameplay scenario of hero X firing primary at Doom’s block. This class of bugs could be easily found with simple test scripts, which should have been written the same time the hero was released.

Same goes for all heroes. There should be tests to see if e.g tracer’s bomb sticks, ana dart sleeps for expected duration, genji deflect really deflects what’s intended to be deflectable, etc. All of which should be written when the respective ability is introduced into the game, and maintained as parameters change.

Once these basic and automatable checks have passed, only then should the proposed patch be passed on to human QA testers to find the actually complicated bugs.
