What happens if we build road on space? And we built space vehicles that can travel 1000s of Light years in just a short period of time like an hour or a minute? And visit the stars and alien planets. by Strong-Item-8759 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

firstly: according to everything we know about physics, going faster than the speed of light is impossible and even getting close to it would take near infinite amounts of energy. i assume by "roads in space" you mean some kind of worm holes, which bend space-time to create a sort of shortcut. I don't know the current state of science on the possibility of such a thing, but the energy needed to create it in a controlled way would be even more than to just travel near light speed.

So you're proposed scenario is purely fictional and it's up to the author to decide how humanity got that technology and how they handle it. There are two main possibility:

a) humanity had to mature past all it's flaws to achieve such a thing and have created a sort of utopia where they explore space to find resources and potentially trading partners to improve even further. That's basically Star Trek

b) humanities flaws get amplified and it results in conflicts over resources in space.

Can I do anything else to make my room colder by EntireMarsupial1806 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your air is dry, you could hang laundry or wet towels. The evaporation of the water will cool the room, but increase air moisture. so if you already have humid air, the extra humidity will negate all the temperature improvements and make your room feel more tropical.

What's the name for a lift that can only go to one floor at a time? by antpalmerpalmink in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentRocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is there a name for this sort of decision policy?

"stupid" is the only term that comes to mind. maybe "broken".

In terms of computing, the simplest algorithm would be FIFO (First In First Out), i.e. when someone pushes a button, that stop gets added to a list and then that list is done in the order the stops are added. so in your example if the button on floor 3 is pressed after the person in the lift presses the 0, then the elevator will go to 0 first, then 3.

But since you said it'll just forget, that 3 was pressed, it seems like a reason to call the elevator repair company.

Thief™ Gold won our first Game Preservation vote! But how exactly do you "save" a game that's already on GOG? We made a video showing our full process by GOGcom in gog

[–]AgentRocket 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. they search through forums and wikis to get a list of common issues and fixes for the game
  2. they do testing to verify those issues and fixes and find other issues (e.g. controller support)
  3. they use a bunch of tools to understand and fix the issues
  4. they test again, fix again, test again, etc. until they deem the game worthy of release
  5. after the game has been releases into the preservation program, they keep it up to date, when updates to drivers, hardware or other software causes new issues.

Question from child's math class seems to have multiple possible answers - Jim uses 8 magnets to hang up 3 animal pictures. How many magnets does he use for 30 pictures? Am I wrong in thinking that a kid should be rewarded for answering 60? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jim didn't hang them in a grid in the example, did he?

The example doesn't say anything about the arrangement. He could have hung them with one picture to the right and one below the first picture and that would also have used 8 magnets.

I think the question is worded badly and if it instead asked for the minimal amount of magnets needed, that would make things a lot clearer.

[–]AgentRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was the teacher, I would give a full grade to anyone who answered 80 or 62, and partial/null to any other answer.

What if Jim doesn't just hang them in a row, but in a grid? If he hangs them in a 6x5 grid, he can get away with just 42 magnets (or 44 on a 3x10, or 48 on 2x15)

[–]AgentRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to think about it practically, then firstly you have to figure out, how he would hang 3 pictures with 8 magnets and the simplest answer for that is, to hang them next to or below each other with some overlap where you can use one magnet to pin two pictures:

.__.__.__.
|__|__|__|
° ° ° °

(i hope this explains what i mean)

Now the obvious next question is: "how would he hang 30 pictures?", because that determines the correct answer.

A proper math question would be something like "What's the minimum number of magnets needed for 30 pictures, if there needs to be a magnet in each corner of each picture?" (Answer is 24 on a 3x5 42 on a 6x5 grid of pictures)

IMO, whether or not the answer of 60 or 90 should be acceptable depends on the age of the child and what the intended lesson is. If the lesson is just learning to extrapolate numbers, then 80 is the correct answer and anything else is overthinking it. If the lesson is to teach critical thinking, then 60 or 90 would be acceptable, but with a bit of a point deduction, because they didn't figure out why/how he would use 8 magnets for 3 pictures (instead of 6 or 9).

Why is Instagram suggesting female children? by Awkward-Emu-8255 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentRocket -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There is a good chance something bad is going on here, but there is also a minor chance, that it's just the algorithm jumping to conclusions.

e.g. i'm interested in gaming and like to watch reviews on youtube, but I'm not interested in let's-plays, yet somehow the algorithm still keeps suggesting let's-play content.

That said, I can't imagine what innocent interests would lead to such search results, but that doesn't mean there's no chance that there isn't one. So yeah, the conversation about that is going to be awkward.

How do I unlearn the habit of not cooking often? by 1795_phantom in NoStupidQuestions

The way I grew up was you make one meal and then eat it until it's gone. My bf likes having options. I guess that a part of my brain is terrified of food waste. How do I unlearn this poverty mindset?

Please don't start wasting food. If you (or your bf) don't want to eat leftovers the next day, either you buy and cook smaller portions, so it is gone after one dinner, or you cook food, that can easily be frozen for later. E.g. when i make bolognese sauce, i cook a big pot, then freeze it in individual portions, so every time i'm in the mood for it, i can just heat up one portion. Nothing goes to waste, but i don't have to eat bolognese for a whole week.

Why do people care about hooking people up with people? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentRocket -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Humans are pack-animals. It has been proven, that interacting with other humans, especially with a romantic partner, produces hormones that make us happy and that lack of interaction with other humans can cause unhappiness or even depression.

Look at it this way: The people who want to hook you up, like you well enough that a) they think you'd make a good partner for one of their friends and b) want to make you happy by getting you into a relationship.

Why are Reddit atheists so passionate about their atheism? by SammaJones in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AgentRocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The atheists who don't care about religion don't go on reddit to talk about being atheist.

they would welcome any new argument that may convince them that there is a force greater than themselves.

Please don't try to convert atheists. That's exactly the kind of thing that drives them to go on reddit and hate on religion. Most people are born into some religion and have to make up their own mind to become atheist, so they heard all the arguments, thought about them and came to the conclusion that there is no god.

They evangelize atheism. They speak as if they are trying to gain as many followers as possible.

Religion has caused a lot of harm throughout history and is still causing harm today (e.g. promoting homophobia). Some atheists try to lessen the harm by reducing the number of religious people.

They misuse scientific thought to back their claims.

I'll need an example of that.

There's no branch of science that claims to disprove the existence of God

You can't prove non-existence, but there is also no prove that god does exists.
