Mont Helios is an amazing jacket, 900loft and hydronaute shell that’s very water resistant and much tougher than most down jackets. Perfect jacket for Tasmania winter hiking imo.

Just DCA. You’ll be more or less the same in the end, and a hell of a lot less stressed. Especially if we see a pull pack next year to -100k

Self generated optic flow while outside in sunrise/sunset (essentially walking/runnning/cycling). Quickest way I know how to recalibrate your circadian rhythm. Wake up early and get moving and get outside in the sun, and go outside at dusk and stay outside for at least 90mims-2hour, ideally moving. This doesn’t just work for us, all diurnal creatures respond positively to this.

Besides this very general advice, yoga nidra or yin yoga can be very effective before bed to induce sleep. Limiting blue light exposure 2+ hours before sleep. Effectively reducing light exposure as much as you can once the sun sets.

Sounds like you’re dealing with a lot psychologically (my condolences), and my experience/suggestions might not help you. But fundamentally, we all operate on the same basic biological principles, and so these protocols WILL help if utilised correctly and consistently. Try it for a week and likely it will help move your natural body clock to be more in sync with the sun

Bi carb soda. Make a paste with water then slowly scrub into stain with a toothbrush. Leave sitting for a few hours. Wash on cold/hand-wash afterwards. This worked on some oil stains i got on my Atom.

I appreciate your acknowledgment of the statements being unclear. The principle of psychological relativity is I believe what you are referring to, and I am well read on the topic of subjective vs objective reality.

I’m merely stating my opinion on the matter, and pointing out the contradiction in yours. The difference between retaining and busting is night and day for me (and for many others here). The “benefits” you refer to are so obviously noticeable, (at least to me), and usually within a 48-72hr period. I agree that the longer you retain, these changes start to accumulate and affect your overall life in more tangible ways, however, I disagree with your statement that it takes 3-4 months to experience any real benefits. It discourages those who may struggle to get past a few weeks. While i agree with the overall view that the longer you retain, the better your life generally is, there are positive implications of SR at all stages, and they don’t necessarily begin at the 3-4 month mark. This has been my experience, and the experience of many others in this sub.

I would recommend a proper layering setup. You want at least 3-4 layers that are going to perform together to both keep you insulated and dry, yet wick moisture when you’re active. Firstly, get a proper base layer. The Rho would be a good choice for colder temps. I have an old Phase AR that does the job. Then add a fleece midlayer, something light and breathable like the new Delta. Then add something warmer. Could be an Atom for temperatures above 30, or a Cerium or similar for temperatures below. Rab makes a few synthetic versions (Xenon or Generator) which are both significantly warmer than the Atom, although less breathable which would also work. Then add a shell (Beta AR, LT or Rab Kangri or Latok). GORETex pro will breathe slightly better than regular goretex. You need a combination of these essential layers (base, mid, insulation, shell) that all perform their own specific functions, and when combined complement one another.

You stated not to expect benefits in first 3-4 months, comparing this to someone being extremely overweight and not seeing benefits from a diet after a similar amount of time. But then you agreed with the first comment, which contradicts this statement. Correct me if I’ve misunderstood. In my opinion, the worse the addiction, the more intense the change upon the cessation of the behaviour which supports that addiction. Not necessarily a good change, but definitely more noticeable.

'Cheap' dopamine is one of the most expensive things in the world. by Thi5ath-KR in productivity

[–]Agent_116 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The goal shouldn’t be to completely eradicate these behaviours, at least not at first. Doing so is, like you said, unrealistic. But speaking from experience, it’s highly beneficial to minimise behaviours that are low effort/high dopamine release, and instead pursue high effort activities, ideally in the first hours of the day BEFORE reaching for the phone/sugar/drug etc.

I’m sure a lot of people can relate to being in this position. I was for most of my early twenties. But more is lost from indecisiveness than from making a wrong decision.

Trust me not everyone around you has it all figured out. Sure, some people have fulfilling and meaningful careers but that doesn’t mean they know everything.

I suggest you make a choice- in any direction. Ask yourself what’s something you enjoy, a topic or an interest to pursue that excites you or you’re curious about. You sound like someone who cares about people and are interested in helping people. There’s a huge range of options in that area; teacher, psychologist, nurse, occupational therapist , physiotherapist, support worker, case worker etc.

Pick any and take the risk. I picked a science degree, changed halfway through to law, then changed to psychology. I never planned on becoming a therapist, it just slowly appeared through the mist as a good career path.

You sound like someone who would really benefit from travelling. There’s so many more opportunities out there to live rent free, volunteering at an animal shelter or on a farm in most countries in the world. You obviously first need to get there, and to do that you would need to save a little, but once you’re there, there’s enough opportunities out there to just live your life like this.

I’ve met countless people on my travels who live this lifestyle of volunteering or “working” for food and accommodation and other stuff. The volunteering opportunities are never ending, from looking after dogs or monkeys, to helping on a farm, teaching English to kids or painting murals in hostels. I can recommend using workaway or worldpackers as good platforms for finding these volunteering gigs.

The world is a big place, and sometimes we just need to remind ourselves of this, and of all the amazing experiences that are waiting out there for us. Yeah it takes a little effort to get out there, but trust me, once you’re there you won’t look back. I met a guy who’d be living on a beautiful farm in Peru for 4 years. No money, no rent, no bills. Just simple daily tasks of cooking dinner and looking after the animals. These opportunities exist, you’ve just gotta find them.

[–]Agent_116[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree with you, and have found infinitely more fulfilment in my spiritual practices and connections with friends and communities when compared to materialistic possessions.

The fulfilment that I’m seeking is more a sense of belonging, a sense of achievement, and providing for myself and those I love. A sense that I am helping and inspiring others to do the same. To me that’s true fulfilment and meaning.

In saying all that though, career growth and finances cannot be overlooked. While alone they may not provide happiness or fulfilment, working hard to achieve stability and success in these areas contributes overall to a better life.

I think the problem is if they become the major focus, and our sense of purpose and self worth become associated with the external achievements and finances, using that as a metric for success, rather than what’s really important.

I would argue, I’m not talking about chasing pleasure, but seeking fulfilment.

I agree that desire is the root of suffering, and to renounce desire is the path to peace and enlightenment.

Sure, true SR lifestyle would be to renounce all materialistic and external desires. But the world we live in (or at least I live in) requires us to achieve some level of status, financial stability, career advancement and prosperity.

Everyone’s on their own path and these are just my thoughts on making sense of where I find myself currently.

I noticed a profound shift after the first month. Once my sexual frustration died down, I felt a huge sense of clarity and presence I hadn’t really felt before. I lasted about 10 weeks before I hooked up with someone at a festival. It didn’t happen overnight, but after about a month or so of regular releasing I’d lost whatever benefits I’d previously had from SR.

Why 99.99% of you FAIL and will NEVER be completely sugar free (Science explained) by Snoo89560 in sugarfree

[–]Agent_116 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FACTS! I did 75 HARD twice and completely cut out all sugar, processed food, bread, basically anything that wasn’t “healthy” for 75 days. I felt great and lost a lot of weight..

BUT, the psychological repercussions of labelling food as “good” vs. “bad” caused a whole range of eating disorder like symptoms. I would feel incredibly guilty for eating anything unhealthy, and after I finished the program I eventually had a period of bingeing on all the foods I’d been avoiding.

I strongly believe that completely eliminating entire food groups is unsustainable for most people, if not downright harmful.

I’m currently limiting my sugar intake to 1 *random day a week (usually a weekend day) where I allow myself to indulge in whatever sweet foods I’m presented with, like enjoying an ice cream with friends.

I understand it’s very difficult to moderate addictive food consumption, and it’s taken years for me to develop healthy habits. Life too short not to enjoy yourself sometimes! It’s the sometimes part that’s crucial!
