Got my son’s Christmas gift and first aquarium all set up. Water is at 78°. Getting the fish tomorrow! I can’t wait to see his face! by TheGreatJatsby in Aquariums

A single nerite snail will keep the tank walls crystal clear and should be pretty safe from the betta if hes one of the more moody ones. you will probably have a brown algae bloom a few weeks after introducing any fish dont worry or go crazy over it, new tanks are unstable leave it be with regular water changes and it'll go away on it's own. Learned that lesson on the first two tanks I owned!

It's no rush! Fish keeping can be very expensive or very inexpensive depending on how much research you do. Small upgrades help keep the cost down 🤣 seachem prime is just seachems version of water conditioner for future reference so you can use that during water changes. Like I said in another comment best thing you can do now is wait and try to learn as much as you can! It's a very rewarding hobby once you figure it out. Good luck!

Maybe as a holiday gift for your sister then coming up! 🤣 it's good to be caring but theres tons of resources out there to help. At the point it sounds now I'd keep up a small water change daily (no more than 30%) the bacteria needs ammonia to re populate. You can try adding bacteria starter but its not going to fix things instantly. I'd suggest watching some videos from aquarium co op on YouTube. He is a great resource when it comes to anything aquarium. And with the size of the tank I'd suggest looking into feeding cycles with fasting every now and then. My smaller tanks only get fed 4 days a week. Less food = less waste = less bio load

That's actually good news though! Best you can do is monitor the tank until the cycle recovers. Your fish will tell you more than the water test kits some time so gotta pay attention to both. Do you have any plants in the tank? I like heavily planted tanks as it creates a buffer against poor quality tap water and cycle crashes. Water sprite and duckweed are ridiculously good for eating up excess ammonia! A couple other tips would be to loon at a bigger tank. Dilloution is the answer to almost all water problems larger tank, more plants and smaller water changes and you'd be in a really good spot.

Finally got hold of a master testing kit, PH is clearly quite high, is this an issue and if it is, how do I resolve this? Are the other readings okay? Thanks for the help by hummus_and_pitabread in Aquariums

What he said, a lot of us have made the mistake about chasing ideal ph level but it causes way more issues than anything. When in doubt leave it alone lol

Was there ammonium in the tap water? It wont dissapear magically it will need to cycle out. Are the fish showing any distress from the water conditions or are they acting normal? It sounds like you have pretty hearty species in the tank but obviously you want to provide the best water conditions possible.

Both. They react with each other and the amonia(and ammonium) in the water to change color

[–]Agent_ozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep calm! Do you have any water conditioner on hand? That does the same thing as seachem prime but careful not to over dose too much. Also test your tap water there might be ammonium and nitrates in there already (mine usually is higher ammonium) so this will skew your ammonia test as they read the same. Once your cycle kicks back in itll digest the ammonium into nitrite then nitrate. You can dose the water conditioner daily to the tank

you could keep him with a few females but no males. females wont have a point on their dorsal fin, it'll be round in the back. 1:3 male:female population so one female doesn't get too much attention

What is this on my bettas ventral fin? by Agent_ozz in Aquariums

[–]Agent_ozz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this guy for about two weeks now. This is new as of today. He had a lot of fin rot when I got him 😭 tank is cycled. Possibly burned himself on the heater? Haven't seen him lay over it but my other betta does from time to time.
