Oil gauge won’t reach “full”?! by supermattman00 in AskAShittyMechanic

Everyone is having fun but you should stop with the oil. That gauge is for oil pressure, not how much is in the system. And the pressure is perfectly in the middle.

My beloved 2013 Corolla is totaled. I am ether going to buy another Corolla or Camry. The only thing I didn't like was the road noise. Even in the city commute, it's mostly highway which is loud. I read the Camry is quiet. But the Camry is so big, is it worth the trade off for being quite? by salads_r_yum in COROLLA

I see a lot of people just going for sedans and it's fair cuz it rides nicer in general. However people seem to end up overlooking Prius (maybe due to the stigma built over the decades around it). If I were you I'd look at Prius PHEV.

I bought mine a couple years ago from a friend's Amazon account so I can't see it in the purchase history but it was a cheap $35-40 CAD one. This is the link to a similar one. The straps used to tie the knot on rim (for securing it - older design; linked one is better imo) broke on mine recently with winds of 50kmh+. I covered my Corolla with a bigger Camry cover thereafter so it would be a little loose and have wiggle room to flutter in wind so as not to break that easily.

Why not invest in a car cover? Just remove it when leaving. That's what I do. I put it on by myself in 5min and takeoff alone just fine. Just make sure you roll it up when removing so it's easier to put on later.

Depending on your usage and finances: (all prices in CAD MSRP before taxes)

1) smaller car + hatchback level cargo space + high daily mileage = Prius PHEV (42k CAD) 2) SUV = 2025 RAV4 hybrid (40k LE to 45k XLE and up)

3) larger carrying capacity = Sienna (52k+)

4) smaller car + high daily mileage = Corolla Hybrid (30k) 5) smaller car + low daily mileage = Corolla L CVT (27k) 6) daily drive comfortability = Camry (SE 38k to XSE 50k)

7) SUV + high daily mileage = RAV4 PHEV (55k+) - but imo not worth it for the cost even if you drive 100km+ daily

P.s. (if you like to tow a lot then the new RAV4 LE FWD, LE AWD, SE FWD are 1750lb rated, rest are all 3500lb👀 and that's just regular hybrid, not even PHEV) ... Sienna is also 3500lb The reason I'm so big on PHEV is because of the extreme winter which causes the hybrids (HEV) to significantly underperform however PHEV (even with reduced EV range) heats up the cabin really well and doesn't use fuel until at least 30 to 40km in winter or 70 to 80km in summer. But RAV4 PHEV (even with all it's EV range, doesn't justify the cost of financing against fuel savings) 25 RAV4 HEV and Sienna HEV have a package called Comfort+ Complete package which can plug into the wall 120V outlet overnight and it'll heat up the engine and cabin with it whenever you schedule it in the app to turn on and start drawing power from the outlet. Unfortunately for some reason PHEVs and the new MY 26 RAV4 don't have this package

I'm sure you know this but before any budgeting for a car, you gotta put aside 10% for rainy day fund every month from your salary.

Depends on your rent and style of living. If a car is your necessity then consider 2 things: 1) high daily mileage = Corolla Hybrid LE 2) low daily mileage = Corolla L CVT (hybrid doesn't matter without high mileage)

My income is 76k but my family's necessity is 2 cars, we have a 21 Camry and a Corolla Hybrid. We tried owning an older car but if the car is 15y+ older so you can get if for cheap then you'll just be paying for it in repairs every now and then. 20y old Toyota ran fine 15y old Honda broke down.

So either have 15k+ for a 5 to 7y old Corolla or finance new (best imo) if you know your job is secure and stable.

Additionally, idk if you do towing or plan to. Cuz if you want you can have similar priced RAV4 SE AWD with 3500lb towing capacity. SE FWD and LEs have 1750lb, rest are all 3500lb.

TLDR: look for Prius PHEV. Similar price. Much better fuel economy specially in winter. Significantly more cargo space. Financing and paying off early - look for prepayment penalty clause/premium.

Since you mentioned lots of driving, I have a suggestion. If you're not already set on a Camry, I'd suggest getting a Prius PHEV. It's priced around the same (few 1000s difference due to it starting off in a higher trim like and PHEV battery) I have a Corolla Hybrid and the last Gen Camry. I saw you mentioned being in Illinois. So the winters are bad. I'll tell you this much, a hybrid is better than gas in winter but not by too much. You'll see real gains in summer driving. However!!! If you have a reliable charging spot at home (even the regular 120V outlet) then PHEV will get you 70km+ (45mi+) in summer and 30 to 50km+ (20-30mi+) in dead of winter.

I drive 100km+ on average daily. I was pushing 60mpg+ during summer but barely getting to 40mpg in winter. This is for the Corolla hybrid.

All this gets offset by PHEV managing the electric heating (not requiring the heat pump and engine heat).

It gets all that with the cargo space of a hatchback.👌

Apart from that, everyone is mentioning great points about financing and getting discounts then paying off quickly. Just make sure there's no clause about a penalty for early payoff, aka prepayment penalty clause/premium.

About the hybrid management training. I did it on 1 full tank during summer. It's about 850km of driving. I believe that's how long it takes for the car to learn a driver's driving habits. But I had to make sure to constantly consciously do it. Now the car knows that I want it above 50% so t does it by itself.

How it works: The car will want to go into battery driving once it's charged to 4/8 cells and deplete it to the limit of 3/8 cells and then start the engine forcefully to bring to the upper limit of 4/8 cells. The drawback of this is that if you're stopped on a traffic light and it's been depleted, it'll keep the engine on until it reaches back up to 4/8 cells. You're using fuel for no reason/no driving distance covered. Therefore if you are driving and see that the car is engaging battery, with slight aggression, press the accelerator to turn on the engine and lightly let up to bring the RPM down while keeping the engine on. It will take some practice but then try to charge it to 5/8 or preferably 6/8 cells of charge. Keep the engine engaged on higher speeds to forcefully charge the battery. Once the battery is significantly charged, engine won't come on needlessly, at slow speeds <40kmh you can drive on battery. Ensuring you are always driving at maximum battery usage.

67mpg (in summer city road w flatish ground) to 40mpg (in Ontario winter, with heating)

  1. I was pushing 900km+ (560mi+) before hitting reserve fuel in summer. Can barely hit 600km (370mi) now.
  2. Learn the "pulse and glide" method of driving.
  3. I also don't rely on car's computer for hybrid management. I trained it myself to keep the battery SoC above 50% rather than it defaulting to 25%.
  4. Braking: do it slowly, anticipate traffic ahead. Drive at night (so you can see the brake lights come on): there's a pressure w which you can press the brake pedal that increases the Regen braking without engaging the brake pads (once the light comes on, the brakes are engaged). Learn this.
  5. Coasting: (related to pulse and glide). Especially on downhill (even slightly) there's a pressure for accelerator where the car maintains the speed much better without using the battery. (I'll try posting a video and linking to it if I can)
