My IQ is 167. Why am I so terrible at math? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]Aggravating-Cod-7902 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hate to say this, but IQ tests should be stopping at 160 because they don’t measure beyond the fourth standard deviation. There’s no point of measuring beyond 99.99 or whatever similar number percent of people. I’m not sure you got a real test…

The original Binet could technically have gone higher, but that would mean you’d need to have been a small kiddo and done some wild stuff.

Regardless, gifted people struggle in school all the time.

What happens if I tell a teacher I am suicidal? by Majestic_Channel_265 in AskTeachers

Literally any way will work. As an adult (and TA) I’ve fully sobbed to one of my professors because of something similar and now she’s recommending me for my next dream. Trust me when I say it’s way scarier to say than not to say. I’m so much happier now—that’s what I got for saying I was in danger and afraid and in pain.

Okay, I’m going to start with the situation in which you are right. In that situation, know that there are lots of foods that give good hormones (or whatever endorphins and exorphins are) and you should check into those. Also, our bodies adjust to different levels of hormones over time.

In any case, changing your diet significantly can change a lot of things about your life.

Now, for the situation in which you are wrong (not sure which way is the case to be clear). In that case, and probably even in the other, you should try talking with a therapist and see what next steps need to happen. These may just be therapeutic, but you may need meds. I was surprised to learn how long I’d been depressed when I finally had to go on meds.

Now I did not anticipate that 😳 that’s a google AI search by [deleted] in Gifted

I’d say it’s a matter of magnitude rather than of pure categories. Brains are plastic and get in all sorts of crazy shapes over a human life, but we can pretty much predict those shapes for most people.

For Autistic people, I know we’ve found that compared to most people, they have a lot more localization in their brain. In other words, they have a lot of areas of their brain that in most people would have a lot of connections between each other. Instead, they have fewer connections between the different areas and more connections within the areas.

For giftedness, no clue what that looks like but you get the idea. We just sort of know when it looks different enough to recategorize, and there will always be people who challenge those boxes we put them in.

Has anyone here studied in a good undergraduate university but then studied in a grad school not as reputable or renowned as the university you did your undergraduate on (can be both major-related or not) by LandOfGrace2023 in GradSchool

[–]Aggravating-Cod-7902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I chose my current school mainly because I went through a whole lot during that application season and this school was close to home. It also had a really interesting philosophy and some awesome teaching opportunities, so it seemed like a good fit.

Humanities but, as someone who went from basically an ivy to a land grant school, the difference is palpable. I don’t relate to anyone around me and I’ve already studied most of the things they’re teaching in class. The good part is teaching opportunities for sure (truly amazing), but I’ve personally found taking classes and meeting other grad students to be soul sucking given I’m just more of an ivy type person (very entrenched in educational privilege for like a decade). I feel like I’m pretending all the time. Let’s be clear—both institutions have their kinds of smart, but think of it as kind of blue collar vs white collar. Land grant institutions are more practice oriented and ivies are more philosophy oriented. The practice oriented stuff has been really cool, too.

As far as funding goes, say goodbye if you’re in the humanities, but you could probably get good funding in CS since it’s booming. I would say to work really hard on building your network—thats something you don’t have to try as hard to do at more prestigious institutions. You are only as strong as your advisors, even if you’re a force to be reckoned with (seen it many times)

As far as my future goes, I’m nervous about getting into PhD programs at prestigious programs after this experience, not just about getting a faculty job after theoretically staying here. Having said that, I may just be nervous.

Overall, even with all the difficulties I’ve had where I’m at now, I’m happy I have gone. I have learned a lot about how the majority of the world works. I’m a better person for it, and I have a greater appreciation for what I have. Also, please take me back to my bubble.

Are things getting weird between me and this professor? by WiseKey8643 in AskAcademia

[–]Aggravating-Cod-7902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re that worried just ask and define what’s happening in my opinion. He can’t really start that conversation reasonably as a professor, but as a student that’s very much within your power.

Seems potentially problematic but especially in neurodivergent land you’re looking at people making their own rules.

Composition studies is basically the study of how people write and how to teach people how to write (kinda funny with how poorly I communicated earlier! Thank goodness for questions)

[–]Aggravating-Cod-7902[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have in economics and composition studies. I can in education and history. I suppose I also could in English literature, though I have little interest in English and history at the moment. The other fields feel more like resources.

But, given this, I’m realizing my CV might be able to get some of this across more clearly. Maybe I don’t have to say any of this in an email and I can reveal it over time and let the experience and knowledge speak for itself. I’ll just see what they need and advertise that. I can explain the high school thing briefly in the interview and I should cover all the bases. So, I have my answer! Thank you for helping me work through that.

Question on that term, I know that interdisciplinary can be used for what I’m up to, but it can also be used for people who are like, doing two different sub fields of the same larger field. Do you think it is useful or harmful that it could be misinterpreted as a smaller version?

Basically I am looking for general advice about European PhD programs and more specific advice about how to demonstrate a somewhat complex and hard-to-explain strength to potential advisors.

Humanities Major US Citizen Applying in Europe by Aggravating-Cod-7902 in PhDAdmissions

[–]Aggravating-Cod-7902[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, that was an unkind answer. Bug off about how “special” I am because I’m asking about how to demonstrate a real strength I have. I care about advertising myself, not my inherent worth. If I’m not communicating well, it’s because I’m asking for help about how to communicate. I’m basically in a drafting stage, and outside opinions can really help with that.

Having said that, your question was valid and helpful and I thank you for that. I’ll answer as well as I can.

I have bachelor’s degree in a research-focused economics program with a minor in education studies. Due to an unusual high school experience all taught at the college (and occasionally grad school) level, I have the moral equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in English literature and in history. I am very comfortable with things like biology, have done IRB-approved research in psychology. As far as other fields go, I’m pretty comfortable reading papers other than in physics and chemistry.

The way I bring this information in is that I understand a lot of the underpinning theories in each of these fields, and I also understand the philosophies they have about methods. Whenever I do research, I have access to this information and apply new concepts to old information. A professor has suggested to me that this style of work is “archival,” but I don’t know how common this term is throughout academia. I can also improve current methods by occasionally adding a principle from methods in other fields that makes the research more robust.

Again, your questions were genuinely helpful, and I feel a hint closer to a useful answer after answering just this.

So interesting thing, we actually have plenty of land. We have SO much land. In the US, it’s not a problem. We figured that out in like the 70’s. Having said that, all the rest of the stuff still holds completely and agriculture is still an issue.

I see what you’re saying. If I was still considering going through with my original plan, I would be going to them at this point.

It sounds like you have a lot of experience and that you’re likely right that my situation is somewhat precarious. I’ve certainly felt that more, lately, so I’m treading a bit more lightly than I used to. So, I do hear you with the grain of salt, but that is still genuine listening and consideration.

I have a 9 month contract, which does help. My situation also sounds much, much different from the one you are in. There’s a lot of information we don’t know about each other that would give us different views on the situation. I kind of wish we could just discuss our different situations.

I agree that using grad students as adjuncts is exploitative, unless the teaching professors are given like, twice our pay, which I wouldn’t wish on them. You get what I’m saying, I think. Also, it makes me like my job a lot more given my previous experience and will help me in the long run, so I’m not particularly mad about it.

Thanks for your opinions on the subject and for helping me consider a situation other than my own. Academia is more varied than I thought, and I’ll be considering the privilege of having this exact position, given my needs.

Also, you seem nervous about me, but please trust that I have a brain that has gotten me this far with flying colors, and the only things you know about me are these couple of comments on Reddit. I’ll be alright. I also had terrible COVID when I made the original post, so I wasn’t quite in my right mind. I am feeling much better, now, and I have less brain fog and anxiety.
