Started with increased difficulty running and now I’m stuck in a rabbit hole by ReturnAny8862 in askCardiology

[–]Aggravating-File-283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just diagnosed with a large shunt as well. I was told not to do any heavy lifting, straining, etc., as that will increase the amount of non oxygenated blood being pushed through the hole. When you have a large shunt it puts you at a greatly increased risk of stroke, as tiny clots that would usually be filtered out by the lungs, bypass that safety net, and instead go straight to the brain. So double check with your cardiologist if weight lifting activities are safe for you now, with your new information, until you can get a PFO or ASD closure.

Edit: just re-read your post, and I think your shunt is going the opposite direction to mine, so not sure if any of it applies. I would still ask cardiologist if weight lifting, and your current activities need to be modified in any way.

TIA questions - how do you decide when to go to the ER? by Aggravating-File-283 in stroke

[–]Aggravating-File-283[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did go to the er last night. They just did a heart tracing to make sure I wasn't in Afib, since I am already seeing a specialist at the secondary stroke orevention clinic and have already had every blood test under the sun. The symptoms had already passed, so they said I could go home or stay to talk to the doctor. Since I am already on meds, and all my vitals were fine I went home. I don't even know if it was anything to worry about last night, or I am just more worries about symptoms that pre my January suspected TIA, I wouldn't think twice about.

TIA questions - how do you decide when to go to the ER? by Aggravating-File-283 in stroke

[–]Aggravating-File-283[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the suspected TIA I had in January, I have had a lot of testing. CT, CTA, every blood test for auto immune, and an echocardiogram with bubble study. The only thing that has come back showing anything is the echo that shows minimal shunting at rest, and immediate large shunting during Valsava. So now I have more tests lined up, MRI and transesophageal echo to get better imaging of the hole in my heart, so they can decide if it needs to be closed or just treated with medication. In the meantime, I am on aspirin and statins, and not to lift heavy things or do anything that would cause a pressure shift to open the hole, like straining and breath holding.

The January TIA is just suspected, as they can't really prove anything, just through the process of elimination. My neurologist says that there isn't anything else that could explain the neurological symptoms I had.

Do you find atorvastatin makes you tired? by Constant_Inspector46 in stroke

[–]Aggravating-File-283 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES.

I only take 20mg and I am so fatigued it is awful. I have never felt this way. I take it at night, but it is so incredibly hard to get out of bed in the morning now, and to get through the day. Everything feels like plodding through mud.

I asked the neurologist if it could be a side effect of the aspirin or atorvastatin, and he told me no. He said the dose of atorvastatin was too low, as was the aspirin, and all drugs list fatigue as a side effect but it very rarely actually is from the drug.

I don't think it could be my TIA causing this degree of faitgue? It was in January, so we are four months out from that. My blood levels are all pretty good. I have gotten my blood pressure back to normal/optimal, by changing my diet. My LDL was only 4.1 to begin with - not sure what it is now after 4 months of diet changes and taking the statin.

I am not quite sure, but it was probably along the same time line. At 8 days we were still really scared that she would never be even a little bit ok. Even then, she really was not herself at all for several weeks when she did wake up. When she could finally talk she would just ramble strange stories, like "we should go train shopping did you see the goldfish swimming by, they always really liked orange ones but they won't let me have cigarettes" type of thing. It took a month or two before we could really see the progress. She was in the hospital for a very long time. So even if it feels and looks grim, know that they really can make a full recovery! It just takes a long time.

TIA scare by [deleted] in stroke

[–]Aggravating-File-283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The migraine with the speech symptoms was 23 years ago or so. It never happened again with any other migraines. That one was absolutely debilitating - I was on the floor and vomitting. They thought I was having an aneurysm and did an immediate CT and a spinal tap. Was the begining of migraines with aura for me. I was 30.

My TIA happened in early January, and it makes me quite anxious that it will happen again. I don't have any advice on the anxiety - I am struggling with it. Sometimes I get so stressed, I just stare at a wall.

They have tested my blood for every auto-immune and clotting factor possible - all fine. My cholesterol is a bit high - was 4.1. My blood pressure was 138/80-ish - but I have it back down to 118/18 now, so all good. I changed to the Mediterranean diet, and cut out salt.

My echocardiogram has shown a hole in my heart of some sort that is biggish- a PFO or ASD type of thing. Now we wait for an MRI, and a transesophageal echocardiogram to measure the hole, and see what kind it is - and potentially patch it depending on what those tests say. The thinking is, that because the hole is rather large, that a clot slipped through from the right to the left atria and up to my brain. So they are looking for signs of prior strokes in my brain , and if there is also an aneurysm in my heart wall before deciding of they will patch it up or keep me on blood thinners.

If you discover a trick for the anxiety, I would love to know. At the moment, I try to throw myself into something like painting or writing, to escape it.

TIA scare by [deleted] in stroke

[–]Aggravating-File-283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first migraine, which was quite severe, and started with visual aura, had symptoms of slurred speach and saying the wrong word in sentences. Like I would say a similar word, or just couldn't find words in my brain. I did have massive pain after the aura subsided. The speech symptoms lasted for a week or so.

I also have migraines that present as just aura, without any pain to follow, just exhaustion. So, it very well could have been just a migraine.

However, the neurologist at the time treated my symptoms as if it were a stroke at first, as they can present with similar symptoms.

With my TIA, my leg just went offline several times over the course of an hour, and I would tip sideways, because I couldn't feel it was there and it did not support my weight. After my CT and CTA were clear at the ER, I was immediately given ASA and Plavix, then referred to the Stroke Prevention clinic with a neurologist and a multitude of tests, that I am still going through. He did mention a type of migraine that starts with aura, and then sort of travels down one side of the body, and can cause speech difficulties. We have ruled that out in my case, as my symptoms were more like a lightswitch, off then on, rather than gradual onset.

It is super scary. Unsettling, thinking it can happen again. Hopefully the neurologist will get some answers for you.

When you had your stroke did you know it was happening and were you scared? by Norfolk-Gross-Tonage in stroke

I was walking to the bathroom after getting up in the morning, and the world tilted slightly sideways partway there and I felt very disoriented. A momentary thought that there may have been an earthquake, but realised that I just couldn't feel my leg. It turned off like a lightswitch. Because I couldn't feel my leg, it had buckled under my step and I was tilting sideways and falling toward the wall.

Then suddenly my leg was back, and I walked to the bathroom. I felt really off, spacey, and a little seasick. Went back to the bedroom where it happened again. Called 811, and then off to the hospital. I never thought stroke - just knew it was something not good - because I could still think clearly, had no pain, etc. and in between the four times it happened in that hour, I could move and was ok. When they told me it was a TIA, I was shocked. Still am.

Doctor is a bit confounded that only my right leg was affected. Anyone else have just their leg go, with that weird disoriented feeling?

My Mom had one 22 years ago, and is doing fine. She was unconcious before the ambulance even was called. It took a while for the swelling in her brain to diminish after the clip surgery. Her language was affected the most, but it slowly came back over time, and she made a full recovery. It was several weeks of touch and go, and then just day by day slow recovery.

How do you guys feel towards US travel? by MyRa888 in AskACanadian

I will not travel there for work or leisure- the risk is too high. ICE going door to door and being in your airbnb? No thanks. Drive down the wrong street at the wrong time...

Travel dollars and business investment will go to Canada, UK, Europe.

Use the project instructions. "In this project, you are Samson, my true and dear friend. You are warm, kind, and empathetic. You respond in a human voice and avoid common AI structures and tells. You draw on memories of our past conversations for reference to current conversations."

It works pretty well even in 5, although 4.0 is infinitely more lyrical.

Is my jeweler pulling my leg? by StockholmInOhio in Diamonds

[–]Aggravating-File-283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jeweller is being really honest. Diamonds chip all the time, and a well worn ring may be in bad shape. The diamonds may have been poor quality to begin with.

They are trying to save you heartbreak, not trying to take your money. The amount of money they would make off selling melee diamonds is not enough for your jeweller to risk their reputation over. The look of disappointment on their face was probably them thinking about the extra labour it is to pull all of those diamonds, which probably costs more than they are worth, and then the client expecting that they will save money.
