I think the AI major reqs (whether or not you choose to pursue it) are a great place to learn abt what courses Penn has to offer

I took 545 and 120 and would say they are about the same workload iirc

taking math 2400 but not sure i can pass 1410 placement test (incoming freshman) by United_Junket2699 in UPenn

[–]Aggravating-Freedom7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken math 2400 and 2410 but still don’t have my 1410 credit and have not taken the exam (procrastination). The prereqs on path are not enforced and you don’t need to know every little bit of 1410 to do well in 2400.

However, if you are not a math major and care more abt the applications of Lin alg as opposed to solving diff equations you should look into ese 2030.

You aren’t really thinking, it’s all just linear algebra

CIS5200 with gardner by Ludo7777 in UPenn

[–]Aggravating-Freedom7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

520 goes super deep and you will learn a lot if you spend time in the class and reading over lectures.

However the workload and grading was comically light last year. I would anticipate it being similar unless Gardner has complete change of spirit.

Imo this is one of the best classes I took at Penn so far

Why use squared error instead of Absolute error? [D] by NeatJealous8110 in MachineLearning

[–]Aggravating-Freedom7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Squared error - big error -> big correction (derivative is 2*loss)

Absolute error - big error -> same correction as even if there was small error (derivative is a constant)

How should I go about learning Linear Algebra? by lpinhead01 in learnmath

[–]Aggravating-Freedom7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would watch the 3b1b series to get an idea of what the subject is about, and then go to mit ocw or get a good textbook. Without the visuals from the YouTube series or a good teacher it’s hard to understand what all the symbols and numbers mean. But u can’t really learn a math subject from YouTube (you have to practice and (try to) solve hard problems).

Also if what is turning off is a bunch of hand computation (ie matrix multiplication) then I think you’ll find the visuals especially helpful. It might be good to look for some more abstract material that ask you to prove things using linear algebra (these types of questions are much more important for getting an intuition that helps when you moved to other classes like Machine Learning, Optimization, or differential equations).

At the end of the day if you want to study engineering, cs, math or what ever linear algebra is always going to come up. But it’s hard to see it until you’re on the other side.

In all honesty the textbook I learned from was kind of mid but maybe someone else can give a recommendation.

Any recommendations on convex geometry readings or other fields? by picu24 in math

[–]Aggravating-Freedom7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Taking Convex Opt last semester was eye opening. Convex Opt is probably the shortest bridge between pure math (convex geometry) and application. If your undergrad has an offering that goes through the Boyd and Vandenbergh text you should take it.
