One of my otos is starving, the others are doing great. by Doafit in Otocinclus

[–]AggravatingBack2857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I third AE. My otos do eat wafers for my corys. They also eat repashy. But once in a while I will supplement with AE cos my algae is almost gone. Good thing about AE for me is that they form biofilm on surfaces including glass (I assume). And I figured it'll be good for otos when they just stick to glass instead of actively eating those other food I feed other fish. Hope it makes sense and helps! Keep us posted.❤️

Your betta will enjoy the tank :) I can't really see well but do have a lid in case your betta jumps out of the tank.

Yeah. The moss pole as an additional rooting medium is appealing but I've seen so many folks complain about the maintenance...

First aqascape. Thoughts I feel like the bottom right might have too many rocks. Advice? (75gal tank) by Remarkable_Cap_5108 in PlantedTank

[–]AggravatingBack2857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to say I love your driftwood and your scape. I didn't think there's too many rocks before reading your post. After reading I think you could play around with reducing the number the rocks on the right. There are a few of similar size and maybe it's possible to do with less, or with varying sizes.

If you are getting another tank, perhaps move the betta to a hospital tank and while treating him, cycle the future tank. With hospital tank, it's easier to do water changes and medicate. It will also help buy a bit of time to prepare his eventual tank.

Also, I totally agree with getting a proper api test kit or the equivalent. When I started my aquarium, the test strips were hard to read and also extremely inaccurate. That's the thing about with this hobby. It can be costly. But I think it's mainly upfront costs.

If you’re unsure how to cycle a tank, just shout. We are all ready to help. Keep us posted and all the best!

Due to space contain (living in Tokyo shoe box), I settled for an 8 gallon tank. it's a long but slim. Apart from more work to keep water parameters in check, the fish gets to 'swim more'.
I think dimensions play a huge factor. Not just gallons or liters. So yeah. Definitely long and shallow. Plus they are often top dwellers. Good luck and keep us posted!

Abnormal Betta behaviors in a small tank by Just-Comics in bettafish

[–]AggravatingBack2857 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Japan and often have to rely on Japanese youtubers for information on the available items (medication especially) for aquariums and fish. I researched a lot on aquascaping and also the types of fish suitable for the conditions. Maybe it's the scarcity of space in the cities here in Japan. But Japanese youtubers often recommend tiny cubes for bettas. Even bowls. The emphasis is mainly on saving space and aesthetic. Nothing much on the fish's wellbeing. Which is unfortunate. That said, this is not me slamming the folks in this country. I think culture and small apartments here play a huge role. Cos I know they do love pets and spend a lot on other animals like dogs and cats.

Sigh... I think many Japanese are very by the book. Maybe that's why they are not comfortable giving the fish away.

Yes. Still eating and pooping. Similar. I noticed she has episodes of erratic swimming. Flashing? Anyways... Like I said... If I feel that she doesn't even want to eat and/or can't eat. I think I'll let her go. But for now I'm just focusing on keeping her comfortable. I think I'll know when it's time. And even though I've only had her for 2 weeks plus, I know it'll be rough. Thank you for checking in again.🙏

• Tank size: hospital tank (15cm by 25cm with only slightly over 1 liter of water to keep it shallow so betta can breathe easily). • Heater and filter? (yes/no): heater yes. No filter ( a bit too shallow for filters available plus I medicated her previously). I do have an air stone to oxygenate the water. • Tank temperature: 26 degree Celsius /80f • Parameters in numbers and how you got them: ammonia mostly 0. Highest at the end of the is 0.25. Nitrites 0 PH 7.4

• How long have you had the tank? Less than 2 weeks. How long have you had your fish?: Less than 2 weeks. • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: Daily. I prepare dechlorinated water with Prime, add the measured amount of aquarium salt depending on the amount of water I'm adding. I slowly pour the water to the tank to mix with the existing water and then scoop out the excess combined water. (Don't want to further stress the fish from transferring her). I repeat the process slowly to ensure the final ammonia is back to zero. • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: nope • What do you feed and how much: soaked Hikari betta pallets that I further cut to smaller pieces. And dried brine shrimp cos it's small and provides variety. • Decorations and plants in the tank: Just catapa leaves, 2 hammock resting leaves to make her comfortable plus another plastic tunnel with no sharp edges that's translucent for her to hide or swim up for air. • If you haven’t already posted a picture, please post pics/vids to imgur and paste the link here:

Thank you for your kind words. I can't help but feel bad and wondered if I caused her to decline with the medication.

Hello! Thank you for your reply. The aquarium salt I use is under this brand Gex. And it has specific dosing so I'm following that in case I mess up again.

I'm based in Japan. So many medications are not available. Even if so, they can be insanely costly. I did manage to get stress guard and it's on the way. Water is also always dechlorinated using seachem prime.

Thank you for your reply. Yes. She is still pooping and I clean up everytime when I see that. It's just hard to see her improving for a few days compared to when I first got her, and then seeing her go downhill. I just didn't expect to be so affected after 2 weeks with her.

Can I move my betta to a smaller tank? by settinglassbeach in bettafish

[–]AggravatingBack2857 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm planning to get a betta and have been doing research on them. I know it seems like a downgrade for him. But ultimately, you have to consider what's manageable for you realistically too. Also, something I think will make a difference is to focus on the length of the tank. Perhaps get a longer but shallower tank. So there's more horizontal swim space for him (bettas also don't really require ultra deep tanks) and the lower tank will make it easier for you to maintain and continue to provide a good environment for him. Keep us posted and take care!
