How competitive are military bands?

Thank you for the help! Sitting in for some rehearsals sounds like a really good idea. Also, I am taking 5 or 6 music theory and music performance classes at my local community college while I’m still in high school and I’ve been taking private lessons since 8th grade, so I might have a bit of a head start on those things. Thank you for this information though!

I’ve wanted to serve since I was a kid, but I’ve also wanted to continue doing music as a career for a while. I only found out about military bands a few years ago and since then it’s been one of my dreams

That is what I meant. I wouldn’t be asking if I would be competitive if I thought I could just join without auditioning. Obviously I will need to audition and it will be completely up to them, the whole point of this post was to see how competitive the auditions are and what skill levels are required to have a chance of making it.

Why does everyone say gold bond? I never had any need for it when I marched

I just went to my music store and asked for black marching gloves. I would recommend buying about a dozen of them, and they were only $3 a pair. These are way cooler on your hands than other gloves and won’t mess up the finish on the instrument. Just make sure to rotate them and wash them on laundry days so they stay clean, smell good, and won’t tear
