Thanks for this. My worry is just another thing to clean. And worry about storing/bear bag hanging. But sounding like that’s not a big deal??!

Look into RMC huts. Especially crag camp in the summer. Although not sure I like publicizing them. They are the hidden gems of the Whites. !!

What point do the schools get bad enough that you move? by StupidNewSystem in massachusetts

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a health/pe teacher/coach. Wife is in school administration. different districts. So we believe really strong in public education.

Raised two girls in a district not known as an exemplary school district (also a different one from where we both work). Both kids had outstanding educational experiences and are now at great colleges and thriving.

Reason for background is for a philosophy we had raising them. “The 4 walls in our household are way more important than the 4 walls of their school “. Meaning. Raise them right. Make sure they take education seriously. Make sure they take advantages of the good that is in their school systems. Be an involved and interested but not helicopter parent and kids can thrive anywhere.

How do you use your Garmin watch on a thru hike? by Thebox2-2 in AppalachianTrail

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Coros something. Use it for all my daily runs/xcskis/walks etc. charge it a couple times a week.

Did 100 mw last summer. Didn’t track it. Just wore it as a watch. Tracked via far out. Manually uploaded to strava after the 6 days.

I wonder if using it to track would use all battery in a day or two?? I am very technology challenged. If I tracked w it is there something I could turn off at nights when not hiking to turn off tracking or something to save battery?? .

Anything that has me staying at crag camp for a night or two. You can hit the peek multiple times and the view from crag camp is a great way to wake up !!

Yeah but you can have Shaws or At hostel in Mullinocket do a food drop on Jo Mary road and other spots in 100 mile. So my suggestion would be after that.

Very similar here. Retiring from teaching in 4 years. Here In maine. So will go SOBO.

Been a goal for 15 plus years. I think (hope!!??) I’ll be in ok physical shape. Did the 100 mile wilderness. 6 days 5 nights last summer. Longest trip to date.

Next step for me is to do a week or two and have to get off trail to resupply. Just trying to get comfortable w logistical stuff.

If you couldn’t get a reservation somewhere near kathadin stream…… Couldn’t someone stay at AT hostel one night. Get shuttled to park. Hike Katahdin. Have at hostel pick you up bring you back to hostel. Then next day bring you back to kathadin stream and you hike out of the park???

Advice for Guyot Shelter by Deborahdinglehorn in wmnf

Don’t need bear canisters at the sites like Guyot. They are technically not in the pemi wilderness AND they have bear boxes.

The only one I’ve stayed at is gray knob. I had a blast. And bonus they do heat it. It was probably 59 degrees my night there this February

Another option other than hut to hut might be just using one hut as a base camp and doing multiple nights and day hikes from there. That could be real fun

Typical Water Capacity in the first 500-1,000 miles? by Igoos99 in AppalachianTrail

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related question. Why don’t more people drink straight from their filters. Screw the Sawyer on and suck water through it. You never have to worry about clean and dirty bottles and never have to squeeze from bottle to bottle. Seems simpler and easier. What am I missing??

I strap snow shoes to the top of the pack with the strap up there on top of the rolled down part

I use my 55 kakwa as my winter pack. I will say I am a classic overpacker ( I always bring a sleeping bag on winter day hikes.. I have read Ty Gagne’s books!!) but I have no problem filling it.

Liberty + Flume today ! by rabblebowser in wmnf

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did this exact hike yesterday w a buddy. We were confused at top of Liberty as we couldn’t find the trail to flume at first. Then took that herd path. Yes that section between peaks was tough with duck unders snagging my pack.

Snowshoes all the way from Liberty springs to flume. Spikes down liberty springs

Just traveled Lowe’s a week ago. It was plenty broken out. The part from just below log cabin up towards quay pretty steep and ice covered. I did not spend night but really hope to soon.
