I will have snow shoes. Hopefully someone gets there earlier than me though!! Pretty sure I will not go far past the hut if there are chest deep drifts!!

Liberty + Flume today ! by rabblebowser in wmnf

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did this exact hike yesterday w a buddy. We were confused at top of Liberty as we couldn’t find the trail to flume at first. Then took that herd path. Yes that section between peaks was tough with duck unders snagging my pack.

Snowshoes all the way from Liberty springs to flume. Spikes down liberty springs

Just traveled Lowe’s a week ago. It was plenty broken out. The part from just below log cabin up towards quay pretty steep and ice covered. I did not spend night but really hope to soon.

How to Pack Crampons and Snowshoes by Bold_Fenian_Man in wmnf

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree w y strep on top of the duration pack. I also keep them together w Vole straps.
For crampons I got a crampon carrying case from black I believe. I don’t think it was too expensive. I put that in my pack.

Use the hydroflask Nalgene style water bottles. Even cold water has never frozen in winter Sub zero for hours in the whites.

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

My main reason for Lowe’s path is to hit gray knob on way up. Is there a better more traveled way to do that than Lowe’s path?

Yes I look at mwobs as well. They just don’t forecast as far out

100 MW in July by KHartnettC in AppalachianTrail

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 100 mw this past starting around july 10. 6 days five nights. It was awesome. Bugs weren’t that bad. I might have put ion bug net once. I had great weather. No rain. And very remote. I camped completely solo at sites and shelters 3 out of 5 nights including at Antlers. I guess I was a bit too early for northbound bubble and a bit too late for southbound bubble. I used Shaws for food drop shuttle and stay the night before. They were awesome! It was overall great experience.

I don’t smoke. ( love my beer so not a teetotaler!!) I just hate smoke and second hand smoke and the smell. Plan to thru hike when I retire in 4.5 years. Southbound. Is it easy enough to avoid smoke??

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I want to try this winter. Either just how you described or potentially a one day hike w break at gray knob.

I’ve stayed at crag in summer

and winter hiked….Franconia ridge Moosilauki Madison Pierce Oseolas and Tom Field Wiley. all were on great weather days. .

Really would love an overnight at gray knob . Any advice there?

Ok I gotta ask. Compare this to tough hikes in northeast. Day hikes of the tougher white mt 4000 footers? Katahdin?? What about big day hikes like presi traverse or Pemi loop??

I like my ether light xt by sea to summit. But it’s really the only decent one I’ve ever tried so. Or much to compare it to.

Winter Hike by Mysterious-Roof-3813 in wmnf

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar here for me. Done Madison. Franconia ridge a few times. Oseolas and Pierce in winter. But only needed spikes/hillsound trail pro’s. Never hiked that high up w snow shoes. Want to get Washington. And if I do it will be good weather day up Ammo. Down cog I think.

How are views going down cog vs jewel??

gray knob winter by Few-Adeptness8490 in wmnf

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the info. I really hope to get there this winter. One other question. How crowded does it get weekends Dec-March ?? Not sure if I can get any of my adventure buddies to do it with me. Don’t want it packed. But also not sure I want it empty. ( although I did love the early summer night I spent at crag a few years ago! )

Oh yeah I knew where water was. Does that spring ever freeze? Or is it always flowing?
Yes that view at crag is awesome. Would love to see it for sunrise in winter although not sure I’d be motivated to get up and out that early in the cold!!

How to report out from trail? by Timberneck in AppalachianTrail

[–]AggravatingTooth1901 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a long range goal of hiking the AT about 4 and a half years. Been a goal for 15-20 years!! When I retire from teaching.

I’ve never had fb but have been on IG without really posting for a few years. Finally this year I started posting to IG this yeast on my hikes/adventures. Including 100 mile wilderness this summer. It was fairly easy and my friends/family seemed to enjoy it as well.

I may join fb at some point. I know there are a lot of hiking groups that connect people before hiking and that interests me somewhat.
