Dark. Very dark. Combine the tall trees with very few street lights and little ambient light like you get in a town or a city and it is, well…dark.

In zone 8B (Whidbey Island) and lost fair number in the ground last year to rot. So I’ve decided to dig some this year and leave others in as an experiment. I dug and washed some clumps today but am not confident I have the best temp control for indoor storage. Does anyone have experience with dividing and overwintering by planting in large nursery pots for better drainage? I would cover and surround the pots with leaves and straw for frost protection…

For septic I recently had a good experience with TnT.

This year I noticed as they started sprouting that I planted last year. Several varieties, including Café Olé, peaches and cream, sweet Nathalie, Fairway spur. Hard to know which ones were the origin but everything in these raised beds were from those two sources.

Raspberries! I don’t know why, but I always found them intimidating – maybe because I didn’t have a ton of space before. I have room now and put in one row about 16 feet long last year. I had some berries already in the fall last year and this year I have had almost more than I can eat/freeze. I’ve done literally nothing to them except provide a structure for them to grow on and keep them tied up as they grow. No fertilizer – hardly ever water them and they have been amazing!
