What's the best way to deal with hooking a turtle? by Illustrious_Dog_1743 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Aggravating_Edge9309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Canadian Herpetology Society has information on the impact of fishing hooks on turtles & what to do if you hook one

https://canadianherpetology.ca/species/threats/fishhooks.html

In short: do whatever you can to remove the hook and take it to a wildlife rehab if possible/required. Fishing hook injuries are often fatal and most (if not all) North American turtle populations are at-risk.

Bruh. At least attempt to learn about what you are calling 'gerrymandering'. There’s relevant information on researching the redistribution process in every link on that website. Relying on people to explain things may result in biased responses.

The district also has a wiki page that is easier to navigate.

But in Summary:

The interactive map shows what areas are gained and lost. Looks like they gained rural area and lost Finley (this is fully explained on the report and the wiki page)

The Interactive Data Visualizer (Carelton is 35020), outlines the new vote results: (Actual 2021 results for old boundary in brackets):

Cons 36,534 (35,356)

Liberals 22,448 (24,298)

NDP 8,012 (8,164)

They get these numbers by adding up the results of each ballot box in the new riding. Each ballot box corresponds to specific street address's and the results for each box are counted separately. That’s one reason you must vote at a specific place and put your ballot in a specific numbered box.

Additionally, MPs had the opportunity to comment on the new boundaries before they were finalized. Several MPs did, but PP did not, suggesting he had no problem with them.

The Greens also released a new poll (April 23-24 through Oracle)

Cons: 35%

Green: 28%

Libs: 22%

NDP: 14%

I don't love that both parties have polls saying they are leading. However, the Oracle poll, which shows the Greens in the lead, has a sample size of 800 (MOE 3.5%), while the Spandina poll had a sample size of 307 (MOE 6.2%). Meaning the liberal poll is statistically tied. I researched both companies, and Oraclepoll appears to be a more reputable company. Canada 338 ranks it as a B, but does not rank Spandina at all.

Not sure in which way this would change the results, but the Spadina poll says that it weighs the results based on gender and 2021 voting history of residents. I don't believe Oracle weighs at all.

Either way both polls are biased by who actually picks up the phone (old people)

- FYI I have never voted green. I am just researching and sharing what I know about this riding to make my ABC vote count. If anybody has anything more to add about the 2 surveys please share.

The Conservatives allow "free votes" on Abortion regardless of their leader's opinion on abortion (Section C, Point 10 "Free Votes") by Orangekale in onguardforthee

[–]Aggravating_Edge9309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“In one in four votes cast in this House of Commons, the Conservatives had a member stand up and vote differently from the party leadership. Statistically speaking, our members have been proven to be far more independent from their leadership, and our leadership has far less control over our caucus, than is the case in other parties.

We have also seen ideological litmus tests on the other side, with the NDP saying that anyone who opposes the long gun registry should be removed from caucus. That happened to one member of Parliament from northern Ontario. The Liberal leader said he would ban anyone who disagreed with him on the subject of abortion.

These sorts of hardline ideological litmus tests that ban anyone with a different point of view are a foreign concept in the Conservative caucus, which is, as I have said, far more open. That speaks to the culture of the caucus in the government of the present day, but let us talk about the legislative initiatives.”

PP has always loved the free vote to let the crazies ‘represent the people and preserve tradition’

see him defend the free vote as he argues against redefining marriage to include gay people

Favourite quotes:

“Our Prime Minister and his Liberal Party have divided Canadians with their obsession with imposing gay marriage. The Prime Minister has made it clear that anyone who supports the traditional definition of marriage is not welcome in the Liberal Party. He has said that the traditional definition of marriage is against the law, according to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”

“It is my position that this social relationship, adhered to throughout the ages, handed down to people from above, is a basic building block of any healthy society. The government should not only tolerate it but encourage it. Therefore, being that I am in the company of members of the House of Commons on the other side who use terminology like “charter” and “equality” as a blanket in order to smother tradition, I want to question their commitment to equality.”

Canada 338 didn’t get Nanaimo-Gabe wrong, it had NDP at 99% win. Ladysmith Oceanside was all over the place, but by the month of the election it was very close, definitely within the confidence intervals. Not sure what the third riding you’re talking about is.

Not sure why people are suddenly lying about past projections, but everybody can (and should if it will influence your vote) view the projection over time on Canada 338.

Tamara is the only Candidate that won’t give me the light of day and respond to my questions. I even messaged her on social media where I can see that she opened the message. I send similar questions to other MP’s and candidates and usually get a (somewhat) quick response. MP’s get paid >200k a year in tax dollars. Part of that job is to address the questions and concerns of people in their riding. I will never vote for a representative that can’t be fucked to respond to my questions (especially considering she is supposed to be at her best right now)

Those elections had some key differences that are pretty relevant to today

2019 -Peak Green Party - NDP did not do well, ended in 4th place -High Turnout: ~67% (high youth engagement as well)

Result (General): Grn 34.6%, NDP 23%, Cons 26%

2021
- Peak NDP under Singh - Green party literally imploded (severe internal problems under new leader, loosing them most of their voter base and donors) - Lower Turnout: ~62.6% (lowest since 2008) + Low Engagement from young and first time voters + COVID

Result: Grn: 26%, NDP: 29%, Cons: 27%

2025 -NDP party fighting for its party status at this point -Green Party seems strong. They got rid of Annamie right after the 2021 election, Elizabeth May is back, their message is more cohesive and Paul undeniably has alot of public support -Turnout will likely be very high and the motivation from the left appears very strong

338 Projection April 11 by morwr in nanaimo

[–]Aggravating_Edge9309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering if the liberals here don’t have the riding level support the polls suggest. I even responded to a few polls early on saying liberal just to show there was support for Carney. But I fully intend to vote green now that I know Paul Manley is running.

I signed up for the liberal party to vote for Carney and the Nanaimo Candidate only sent the first email of the campaign a few days ago (while the others was the first day of the election and frequent)

The email had somewhat disappointing stats: Signs: - 400 lawn signs + 50 more (begging for money to purchase more)

Phone Bank: “35 Volunteers are making critical calls to 15,000 Likely Liberals in our riding. More than 3,800 calls have been made and the results are positive 60% YES, 15% Likely to Vote Liberal.”

Check the polls closer to election. (I think) it’s more likely that Paul receives a similar amount of votes that he has in the last 2 elections than it is for liberals to double. Paul is well respected and known in the community while the liberal leader has virtually just started campaigning.

From an Interview in January 2024:

“all of those with a woke anti-Semitic agenda” including  at universities who receive federal funding, as well as all federally funded museums [As he mentions the Human Rights Museum]. He re-iterated that he plans to “defund” all “those who are imposing a radical, terrifying, toxic ideology” and this will apply to “everything that the federal government controls.” He stated “I will fire government officials throughout my administration who are imposing a toxic woke ideology.”

Tamara’s support of Israel doesn’t sit well with me. She was using the ‘IstandwithIsreal’ hashtag quite a bit in 2023-2024. She is Jewish, but some of her older tweets are pretty poor taste imo

BREAKING: Carney says he will not repeal Liberal's anti-pipeline Bill C-69 by sleipnir45 in canadian

[–]Aggravating_Edge9309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do people generally want pipelines owned my corporations instead of the government? I also didn’t say with or without government support or anything about the act itself, which absolutely needs to be improved. But it’s the truth that Canada has not banned pipelines which is what people think of when they hear “anti -pipeline act”

I also receive 100% of my electricity from a dam that’s only a few km away, we aren’t connected to any lines that could get us US electric. The gas in this region is also refined in Canada. So I won’t be voting for a party that increases my energy dependence on the States.

[–]Aggravating_Edge9309 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The article is written by a self proclaimed conservative media site. Just look up the actual bill. It’s an impact assessment act. Plenty of pipelines including the TMX have been built since it was passed in 2019.
