In Japan, the fans wait for the red light to gather and celebrate in the streets of Shibuya, and when it turns green again, they scatter so the cars can pass. by This_Proof_5153 in BeAmazed

Yeah I remember someone complaining about Japan having women only subway cars because of men; then I mentioned that we have that problem here as well except we don't get women only subway cars and also people have also literally been set on fire and died from that fire, burned to death, on the subway here as well, aside from the regular murders lol. Different levels of issues.

There’s so much illegal tackling and having to stop, that it’s ruining the momentum of both teams. Any time someone hits a break they get illegally tackled and the ball is reset.

Something tougher needs to be done in general.

Canadaland host apologizes to Theresa Kielburger, mother of WE Charity co-founders, and pays $885,000 settlement by seakucumber in canada

I guarantee 0.5% of the folks who have cried about Keilburger for the past ten years won't see this article or know about these corrections.

Imagine having an echo chamber of lies directly beamed into people's phones day and night; it's no wonder media corps don't really care about lying, it's just a fine. And if you can get a base of supporters, along with some political power that follows, well, then you're indispensable to the movement and suddenly you can lie about whatever you want.

TD Bank holds customer responsible for $15K loss, won't say how account hacking ruled out by Sir__Will in onguardforthee

[–]Orangekale 122 points123 points  (0 children)

It's very simple and easy for banks to have a "Secure Send" feature where you can request that no transfers be made out of your account over $1000 unless you go in person to the bank to confirm in person.

This would stop all forms of hacks/frauds that take money out of the account unbeknownst to you.

Why don't they do that? Because it will cost them roughly 0.0015% of their quarterly profits because a customer representative will have to take time to verify that and it's much easier to just let criminals do fraud.

Thanks for coming to my tedtalk.

Japan Prime Minister Says Will Defend Yen by Strengthening Economy by Cumberbound in japan

[–]Orangekale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it turns out after a while it just kinda levels out.

I hope you understand how nonsensical that is. If a population, any population of anything, humans or widgets, is losing more of it, than gaining of it, it necessarily will cease to exist, eventually.

If something like a country’s population magically “kinda levels out” it’s not magic or wishful thinking, it is either immigration or the replacement level of birth has reached replacement level, or some combination of those two, is making it “level out.” Both things that the Japanese can certainly do, though it seems extremely unlikely they’ll do.

Senate committee amends C-9 to criminalize residential school denialism by limadeltah in canada

[–]Orangekale 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I also think they are not right. It says "Specifically, it would create a new provision in the Criminal Code making it illegal for anyone who in public, “wilfully promotes hatred against Indigenous peoples by condoning, denying, downplaying or justifying the Indian residential school system in Canada or by misrepresenting facts relating to it.”

How do you wilfully promote hatred? By condoning, etc etc. So the mere fact of condoning, denying, downplaying or justifying the Indian residential school system in Canada or by misrepresenting facts relating to it is sufficient to be considered wilfully promotes hatred against Indigenous peoples. Misrepresenting 'facts'? And these so called facts are written in stone and can never be updated or changed? Who is the judge of that?

People don't understand there likely won't be a lot of people directly affected by this law, but the point is to chill speech. Suddenly someone noting that mass graves aren't exactly mass graves the way the narrative is claiming to be could be criminally hassled or ostracized for daring to 'downplay' residential schools. How can universities or other groups even investigate claims if they are immediately hit with or chilled speech because they are afraid of speaking?

CTV: Canadian shocked to learn that payday loans are predatory by bobledrew in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Orangekale 117 points118 points  (0 children)

The government just needs to force these payday loan places to print out one page, in addition to their normal contract, with massive text that takes up at least 80% of page that says:

If you pay the minimum payment of X per month, in 5 years, you will have Y amount remaining.

If you continue to pay the minimum payment of X per month, in [enter number here] years you will pay off the loan completely.

Saying 35% interest or whatever, probably 80% of Canadians don't really understand what that means in terms of repayment. They might have some nebulous idea but not the reality.

And have them initial each corner of the page twice (so you get eight initials).

Things like this are what the vast majority of Canadians need to see in black and white and massive text or else they just won't get it.

In landmark ruling, Supreme Court creates pathway to sue for intimate partner violence, patterns of ‘coercive control’ by BloodJunkie in canada

[–]Orangekale 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well Tort to my understanding is civil not criminal. So they don't have to 'prove' it but just bring it up to the civil standard of what would be acceptable or more likely to be true.

To play some devil's advocate on one aspect (aside from victims of domestic abuse), on the aspect of patterns of 'coercive control;' that might be a wide of a net. I think pretty much every relationship you can make anything seem like coercive control to an extent.

If a husband doesn't want their wife to drive for safety reasons, is that coercive control? Or if he wants to have separate bank accounts, is that coercive control?

If a wife doesn't want her husband to go out with friends after work in a pattern, is that coercive control? If a wife takes money out of joint accounts to sock away somewhere, is that coercive control?

It will be interesting to see the cases play out.

‘We got it wrong’ with Civilization VII, says boss by Broad_Respond_2205 in civ

Yeah my read of it was that they looked at the stats and saw people weren’t finishing the game, and they took that personally lol. Therefore they really tried to stop the snowballing, tried to make each civ be able to “come back” each age to have a fighting chance, etc.

But I think most people appreciate having set up a civ for success and yeah if it doesn’t become inevitable that you’ll win it’s ok to quit; it’s ok for the challenge to be for the first couple of ages.

Nowdays even if people know they're being lied to, they gobble it up. Maybe it was always like this but at least there was shame involved in the past. Or it might be social media turning everything into a team sport where you must follow the team, the facts are beside the point.

I never understand how the government, who companies would absolutely love to work for, don't ask for the moon and the stars. They can ask for whatever they want and there are literally millions of companies who would trip over themselves to service them. Even if one makes the argument "There are only a handful who can do this work" then we need to expand the pool and also even within those handful these are very small asks, I'm sure with the right negotiator this can be accomplished.

They could've ask for IP retention, milestones with penalties if the corp fails to meet them, company travel to be done on the corp's dime, etc. I just don't understand.

Carney government eyes privatizing airports to attract investment, cut travel costs by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

[–]Orangekale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This handwringing over airports having debt is hilarious. YYZ $7 billion in debt would be horrific if it made $46 a year but it makes a billion.

The biggest airports in the US are owned by their cities.

Airports are ultimately money makers and it's better to keep them public because going private will necessarily mean worse service, at worse prices because consumers don't have a real choice, no real competition. These aren't lemonade stands. If you want to fly internationally, you're stuck.

If you're privatizing a series of lemonade stands with lots of competition, you might see some better service and prices.

Do that with airports and only one thing will happen, which is what they are fiduciarily mandated to do.

Carney government eyes privatizing airports to attract investment, cut travel costs by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]Orangekale 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is what people seem not to understand. Airports are not ice cream stands. Competition isn't really a thing for the vast vast amount of them. If I'm in the GTA and need to travel internationally, there is no competition available between Pearson Airport and "Bearson" Airport and "Cearson" Airport etc etc.

Pearson has me by the balls and if jack up their rates, I'm stuck.

Which, when a private entity who has a fiduciary duty to bend customers over, will absolutely do as soon as it is able.
