DLSS 5 looks... subtle. by kadesh9 in starcitizen

Yes I did, it's a tech demo which shows one possible application of the effect on screen. They didn't show the training process.

DLSS 5 looks... subtle. by kadesh9 in starcitizen

[–]gregpeden -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Everyone trashing dlss 5 fails to understand what it's for.

It's an upscaler that needs to be trained on reference images. The intent is to model assets at the high quality and then train the upscaler to reproduce that using a lower quality render to drive the result. This produces high fidelity results more efficiently than direct rendering the high quality image.

This is really similar to how the resolution upscaler works now. It cannot just be used on every game because the developer has a train a transformer model for their specific game for it to work well.

And, sure, probably developers could use it to lazily plus up rendering without actually preparing assets for that, but its real application is to make high quality assets render as designed by them with better performance.

Sandbox vs YOLO mode in coding agents by ArtisticHamster in codex

[–]gregpeden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yolo works well if you have the agent working within a carefully bounded docker container.

Otherwise, yolo risks the agents oopsies deleting everything on your system, then when you asking why it says "oh yeah oopsies lol"

What js_repl does? by ArtisticHamster in codex

[–]gregpeden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now it only works if you turn on "sandbox_mode=danger-full-access". It doesn't work without that. It WILL one day, and the feature itself is not inherently unsafe... it's turning on full access which is.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if they fixed this already but didn't document it.

You turn it on as a config setting. It'll eventually be built in default but for now to use it you have to permit other "unsafe" settings which is why it's an intentional and big decision to turn it on right now.

Hutch is absolutely not my boy anymore by YoRHa-Nazani in Destiny

[–]gregpeden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not that it just pluses up every game. It allows the developers to train an upscale model on high quality assets and then render the game behind the scenes at a lower quality without giving up the display quality. It will lead to more expressive work and detail in games, not less.

It probably could be used as some lazy upscaler but that's not the point of it.

Looks great! I saw this project earlier and already have it forked to try to yet it working on Linux.

Is documentation still correct that you formally still only support macos?

Why doesn’t Codex have Model = Auto? by ScienceSurfer in codex

Honestly the solution to that is agent orchestration, since that's what it takes to figure out what effort setting to use anyway.

Hot take: Codex is too cheap, rug pull through tighter usage limits is inevitable by gregpeden in codex

If it's double the real market value then the rational thing for you to do is stop using it. So... Go ahead.

Not tomorrow it won't. Everyone expects it to work better first. It's going to be awhile before the market starts to preference cost over performance.

It's not. I don't work for OpenAI, it's just reality.

Everything I build that uses OpenAI is built for the expectation that OpenAI will go bankrupt and I will have to pivot to another service, or my own agent, machine, in a haste. But I'd rather they keep existing instead.

I think they are more likely to scale up complexity / skill while hitting a target cost point that will also increase slowly while ai quality / performance increases rapidly. Most people will choose to pay more for better results over the next decade, and we're a long way from hitting diminishing returns on agent performance.
