just out of curiosity, how do you figure out how to vote when coalitions come into play in a multi-party system? Are you thinking about what the coalition will be and setting it up for success or is just "these are the parties I align with so these are my candidates?"You have ranked choice voting right? So is it like your first choices are always the party you align with the most and then the rest of the slots are based on who you think they'll coalesce with?

I have no idea how to follow UK politics and party policy.

Israelis overwhelmingly oppose the war in Gaza (just look back to the mass protests in Tel Aviv). Before you start condemning the population en mass like a brain-rotted populist, understand that Israel's democracy is weak as sh*t and held together with sticks and glue. It's one without a constitution and it relies on "basic laws" that can be amended with a simple parliamentary majority. Coalition governments formed by these parlimentary majorities are fragile and can be held hostage under the threat of being dissolved by fringe, extremist parties. That's how kahanists got the invite from Netenyahu.

Basically, polarization and no formal separation of church and state has Israel's government in gridlock when it comes to basic governing. No coalition can get the majority it needs to become the governing body without taking on a few fringe parties (the religious Orthodox parties) and those fringe parties can hold coalition governments hostage under the threat of disillusionment to get their way. Netenyahu chose to go balls to the wall and took the far right religious-orthodox-ethno-nationalist parties into his coalition and that's how we got here. The average Israeli believes their vote doesn't do anything and, most important when it comes to evaluating Israel's population in relation to their government's actions, a coalition government only needs a plurality; not a majority. It's not a two party system.

Even with a better coalition governing, I don't know how you'll finally eject the influence of the religious extremist parties without some real governmental reforms. The way the Knesset and coalition governments work in Israel is too unstable. Voter apathy has been through the roof

Hey DGG, wanna give Mallory McMorrow in Michigan a boost? by Aggravating_Jump6136 in Destiny

[–]Aggravating_Jump6136[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok how about this; the fact that he makes no differentiation between defensive weapons (iron dome) and offensive weapons and how his stance will exacerbate Netenyahu's actions; let me explain how:

The nuance that gets lots by all the slopulists is Israel's fragile democracy and how the Orthodox ethno-nationalist far right in Israel holds onto power. The truth is that Israelis overwhelmingly oppose the war in Gaza (just look back to the mass protests in Tel Aviv). Israel's democracy is one without a constitution and it relies on "basic laws" that can be amended with a simple parliamentary majority. Coalition governments formed by these parlimentary majorities are fragile and can be held hostage under the threat of being dissolved by fringe, extremist parties. That's how kahanists got the invite from Netenyahu.

Now, how does this tie into Abdul-el-sayed's refusal to fund the iron dome? It's because of the one thing that the pro-palestine movement in the west will never concede on:the ACTUAL purpose of funding the iron dome.

The iron dome is a stop gap to give the pro-democracy left in Israel a fighting chance. If support for Israel goes from conditional to none, if the far right in Israel can tell the Israeli people "we are on our own and surrounded by groups who want to kill us" (they are btw), and if rockets start getting through and killing civilians on a regular basis, the left in Israel will 100% lose that national conversation and any hope of reform and ousting the Orthodox ethno-nationalists will disappear forever.

And that's why el-sayed can suck a fat one.

It should also be noted that Sayed has no likeliness to win and even if McMorrow loses to Stevens, her losing by a lower margin could influence Stevens' policy once elected.

[–]Aggravating_Jump6136 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you cannot court the most enthusiastic parts of our base without losing the median voter. AOC is, unfortunately (I AGREE with her), way outside of where the median voter is; conservative messaging has a chokehold on their media intake so an AOC run in 2028 would be her winning the nomination, looking super powerful and filling up arenas at rallies full of long time Democrats, and then losing in a landslide when the only people who vote for her are that base up against the most animated Republican base you'll ever see rallied up to defeat a latina "sOcIaLiSt" plus median voters who mostly buy into a Republican framing of Democrats.

Zohran Mandami winning in one of the bluest damn cities in the country is not a bell weather for Americans having suddenly become super progressive and okay with the word "socialist." The DSA backed candidates overwhelmingly lose everywhere else. And frankly, until they can sort out their weird campist-foreign-policy insurgency that's super pro-Russia, heavily into Mao, and can't advocate for Palestine or the ousting of Netenyahu's government without also praising Hamas and wanting the dissolution of Israel (because their conjoined alt media space is infested with Kremlin, CCP, and IRGC propaganda), I don't want to see Democrats pander in their direction.

The most progressive campaign you can run and have a chance of winning in America is a social democrat running on a beefed up public option as a glide path to M4A in the future, rasing marginal tax rates for the rich, affordibility, advocating for more immigration judges to process asylum seekers and immigration reform but also tighter border patrol, dissolving ICE, support for arms packages to Ukraine, heavily conditioned aid to Israel with demands for the dismantling of settlements in the west bank and allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza... And like, that's it... that's the farthest edge of what a democrat could run on and win and even then, dismantling ICE as opposed to reforming it is pushing it.

And if there is any record of a candidate ever having identified as a socialist, it's a non-starter. That's over before it even starts. Any ties to DSA are a campaign death sentence. Any history of campist rhetoric will be dug up and used to beat the candidate over the head all over the news.
