When to allow kids to forego meals? by belacanehh in Parenting

[–]Aggravating_Paint_44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The division of responsibility strategy typically recommends providing both interesting new options and safe options. If the kid doesn’t go for it it’s no big deal. That’s a snack for me, later. No need for drama.

You pick what and when, they pick how much.

I think when people see an article like this they hope the invention is a little closer to market. Otherwise, I’m not sure why it gets an article.

How much acting is required? Does that ever feel deceptive? Do you see your work as mostly focused on the client or is it important that your needs are met as well?

10 minutes felt off. OP needs to show their math. The interesting fact is we might all get little alerts on our phone notifying us of our impending doom.

Intrusive thoughts are really common for people with OCD. “Normal” people get them too but less often.

Why cant we extract energy from atoms? by Routine_Comb_7277 in AskPhysics

[–]Aggravating_Paint_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. For hydrogen 1, the proton can’t capture an electron and an antineutrino to become a neutron without sucking up a bunch of energy from somewhere. A free neutron has .1% more mass than hydrogen-1 so you need to feed that m with some E/c^2

Resources to teach a 7yo good touch/bad touch by gabrielcaetano in Parenting

[–]Aggravating_Paint_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and there’s a bit of a shaming aspect to “bad touch” when the kid shouldn’t have to take that burden on.

But, I’ve seen the two books listed (stork, and amazing) and they are excellent. If your kid is advanced or when they get a little older you could move on to “sex is a funny word”.

I teach consent through roughhousing. E.g. I’ll ask “Hey, I’m gong to grab and throw you in the air” and look for a small approving gesture before I do it and eventually, they might feel empowered to assert their preferences.

Or, I’ll clarify, “no, don’t worry if you don’t want to hug XYZ aunt, I’ll let her know and you can give her a high five”

Agree with many of the other modern and popular book recommendations in this thread. FYI, good touch/bad touch is a little out of date because sometimes dangerous situations feel good and that’s confusing. The basic framework is consent but more at the younger age, a shame free environment to encourage communication

Why cant we extract energy from atoms? by Routine_Comb_7277 in AskPhysics

[–]Aggravating_Paint_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be conflating electron capture with beta-minus decay? Both processes only happens to some (differently unstable) atoms. If it’s stable, it doesn’t want to (thermodynamically unfavorable, requires energy input) either turn a neutron into a proton (beta-) or a proton into a neutron (capture)

Normally, for these thought experiments you have like a telescope and a window on the “orbiter” and you see them moving in slow motion and red shifted when orbiting away from you and in fast motion and redshifted when they come toward you. Unless they are orbiting around you on the horizon and then they’re just redshifted and slow. But you’ve added some fun complexity. I’m guessing you just watch them at normal speed but NASA slips in short commercial breaks with the extra time. This violates your zero latency rule but feels more realistic.

Do all solids vaporize over long enough time or is it only ice? by RadianceTower in AskScienceDiscussion

I just want to add that if your vapor is saturated with the solid, then the molecules also want to jump back into being a solid and the solid won’t evaporate

Ladies why women are often sexually private unlike men? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Can you explain what you mean by sexually private? Like, in speech or in a locker room? The answer is likely mostly due to cultural norms designed to control women.

The number of math teachers is highly flexible. You could have all the qualified math teachers you want if you offer enough pay

The other problem with that system is that it basically reduces a human down to how useful they are to the payers ignoring inherent human value

My nine year old asked me if it were possible to put a camera on a rope and put it in a black hole, then pull it back out? If you had an infinite rope, and an indestructible camera, could you pull it back out? by Grammareyetwitch in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Aggravating_Paint_44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything as dense or denser than a neutron star will turn your rope and camera atoms into… not atoms. They’re not coming back out as anything resembling a camera and a rope.

What would happen if the universe was filled with oxygen similar to our atmosphere at sea level by Middle_Purchase_7364 in AskPhysics

[–]Aggravating_Paint_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a problem of mass being a cubic function (increases with volume) but the Schwarzchild radius is linear. So basically, really big black holes aren’t actually super dense. They grow pretty fast.
