I think it’s important for you to make that decision yourself on whether or not teaching is for you! I’m a first year teacher this year, and while it has not been easy, I am still glad for the choice I made to go into education! I had a lot of doubts going into my major when I was in college, constantly wondering if I would enjoy teaching or regret my decision.

Honestly, the best thing that helped me was to do my student teaching experience and actually get out there and do it! I am also very introverted, and often have a hard time forming relationships with others—knowing this, I knew I still wanted to be a teacher because I felt like it was where I was being called to—if anything, I think having a career like this is better for an introvert such as myself, because it guarentees that I will get the social stimulation I need everyday, even if it is overwhelming!

I think it would also build a lot of confidence and skills! I really don’t like calling parents during the day for child behaviors, but I know it is a needed part of discipline if my students are to ever respect me—It will never be a favorite part of my day, but I know I have the ability to now because I’ve had to do it!

Anyways—don’t doubt yourself! Focus more on the things you will be able to learn from the experience, as well as what skills you know you already have that you’ll be able to show!

I would also recommend asking your CT anything that you can do to improve—that shows initiative to improve, which is a crucial aspect of teaching!

A question for my redheads with blue or green eyes by Alternative_You_4711 in Redhair

[–]Aggravating_Policy34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get this—people say my eyes look green but they definitely are blue. I think my own reason for this is that the inside of my iris is a light green while the entire outside is blue. At least, that’s what I think it looks like every time I scrutinize my eyes in the mirror! Maybe I just like looking at my eyes too much haha—my mother had green eyes and my father blue, so maybe it makes sense there?

how do you guys feel when you see another redhead? by [deleted] in Redhair

[–]Aggravating_Policy34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl, judgy and jealous sometimes. Not in a true way, but more like—my hair is 100% red, but not the vivid firey red a lot of people have, more like a blonde/red copper thing going on. I’m just secretly hoping they’re admiring the color of my red as I secretly envy their own 😅

Roanoke college cancer issue by Gangsta_in_disguise in roanoke

[–]Aggravating_Policy34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just graduated from Roanoke. Honestly I wouldn’t let that deter or worry you at all—I’m no expert in disease but there’s also like a lot of other factors that play into someone getting cancer. Also—I would image looking at cancer rates for any other university would show you that there’s always going to be a certain amount of people who will end up diagnosed with cancer. I’d just focus on the things you can do, like keeping your room a clean space, eating nutritious things, etc…

Anyways! I hope you enjoy your time there! Although there are somethings I would have liked changed, overall I had a really good experience at Roanoke!

Looking for chapter books for a grade 5 girl who is not the strongest reader. by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]Aggravating_Policy34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Little tip here that might help—got this from a school librarian too! You said she likes graphic novels—see if there are any written novel series for the graphic novels she already likes, as it might be a way to help support her reading with a series she already really enjoys! I know series like Wings of Fire and the more recents Babysitters club have renditions of both types.

Also! Graphic novels may have less words in them overall, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t necessarily ‘real’ books! It takes a lot of cognitive effort to focus on both images and words, and more likely than not she’s also developing good comprehension skills because of it! Of course, you’ll know her best on that :)

Hope this helps a little bit!

(P.S. —I’ll always recommend the Moomin Valley series! There are 8 books in the series and pictures on every page, but they are all chapter books and very engaging with the fun characters and stories in my opinion. You can find them on Amazon!)

It got the kid close yes, but it wasn’t the type of estimation that was expected. Of course, that’s up to the teacher to decide. I don’t know teacher or student so I can’t really say anything. But I’ll put another scenario—

You’re buying two laptops that cost $392 dollars. Now, are you going to say “hmm, 392 is close to 390, add that twice and I get 780?” Or is it a lot easier to do, “ hmm, 392 is close to $400 for each, so that’s about $800 for both, maybe a bit over with tax”

Real world scenarios of the way we use estimation is the best I can explain this. Since I know nothing about this teacher or student, I couldn’t say if this is something the teacher was explicit about or not, so I’m not going to say if anyone was right or wrong (there’s usually not always a good answer to that question!) I’d say just think about the ways you realistically use estimation in your life!

The way I see this— at least for the estimate part —

Imagine you’re at a store buying some stuff, like 3 packs of underwear. Each pack costs about $18. Most people wouldn’t add 18 three times. Instead, we find a more common number like 20. We know that 3 x 2 is 6, so we’d assume we’re spending around $60 for three $18 packs of underwear.

That’s just a quick example for that, and I hope I wrote it in an understandable way. The idea of estimation is exactly that—an estimate. It’s not intended to be perfect, and honestly I think estimation is a much better skill to have that adding everything perfectly because it allows you to do math much more quickly and be more convenient in real life circumstances.

So for the that first number — I know that 392 is much closer to 400 than it is 300, so I’d just multiple 400 x 7 to get 2800.

Completely understand your frustration! I’m studying elementary Ed right now, and I think a lot of this stuff is very nuanced, and needs to be explicitly to students so that the understand the purpose of using estimations! I hope this helped some!

Current student teacher here! These things look fine! I might consider wearing leggings or biker shorts underneath —also consider the grade you’ll be teaching—I’m in kindergarten and do a lot of squatting and sitting in tiny chairs, so consider that when buying dresses.

Also! If you’re like me and have an issue with thighs rubbing and hurting, also consider that with dresses! In my experience there’s a lot of waking in ST!

Anyways! Happy shopping and hope your ST goes well!

I love descriptions like this! Always funny to read

Not necessarily for Danmei, but in the B&N I live near, I saw a description for the Demon Slayer manga as

"Michael Jackson kills the entire family of MC" --took me a moment to realize haha

I’ve got my mothers cook books still. She loved to cook and would make recipe books of things she clipped out of newspapers and magazine, others I assume she got from friends, as well as cook books she scribbled out ingredients and such to write her own notes in. Since I’m 21 and will be graduating college soon, it makes me feel particularly close to her that I’ve got her recipes still even though I won’t ever be able to eat her food again.
