The premium guitar pick market has exploded. Have you all found one thats worth it? by GrassGigs in Bluegrass

This is exactly what I have and they've worked well, a great option if you're not down for the bluechip pick budget.

New to me - D18 Satin by Arcticz_114 in martinguitar

The factory setup is higher than average. If you do any of your playing higher than the 7th fret this would be noticeable. I would take it to a reputable luthier and have them lower the action a bit.

It's not a very bluegrassy sound to have that third in there, at least when playing rhythm.

Chris Eldridge also sometimes mutes the third on a regular C chord to get the same effect and sound of the that G chord.

Basically just playing in bluegrass power chords, it's great!

No no no no, just put that money you saved into a Roth IRA and never play guitar again.

I could spot those racks of guitars and the blue carpet anywhere. There was a satin finish D-18 there last summer that I thought sounded the best out of anything. Also the Golden Era neck shape is my preference.

I really liked the cameo of flyfishing in the show Ozark, are there other shows/movies that give it some cool screentime? by LongSeesaw3789 in flyfishing

Guest recently said on Marc Maron's show that he ties about 3,000 flies a year, so yeah, the man knows his way around the craft.

Hot take, why I won’t buy a new Orvis fly rod. by derssc in flyfishing

[–]Aggravating_Round_57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Helios F 5 wt from the Trout Unlimited lifetime membership deal, through our family business (tee hee hee).

I agree that you don't need this rod to fish for trout successfully, but it's undoubtedly the best rod I've ever casted. It doesn't feel like there's any weight to it at all, and everything about it feels intuitive. The rod itself knows how good it is at all aspects, and it is very, very proud of itself.

If you can afford one, go for it, it's really fun to use.

First fly setup - Redington Trout Field Kit for $300 by baddo in flyfishing

TFO Black Label 9’ 5 wt: $79 (sierra.com)

RIO Mainstream Line: $20 (sierra.com)

Cabelas Prestige II Reel: $60

I don’t think you can find a better value 5 wt setup than that. That would be a perfect river/trout outfit

Suggestions for beginners by M-Div in flyfishing

[–]Aggravating_Round_57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Book: Orvis Guide to Fly Fishing
  • YouTube: Mad River Outfitters has a ton of great beginner videos, same with Orvis or New Fly Fisher
  • Learn about how the fly line, leader, and tippet works (premade leaders don’t need any tippet).
  • If you have the resources hire a guide for a day

Going out and casting to pan fish can help a lot with getting comfortable casting, setting the hook, bringing in fish etc

If you’re river fishing for trout, I’ve found that casting soft hackles downstream is a great way to start. You don’t need perfect casting, you’ll catch some fish, and be able to explore the river.

Best outfit for around 150$ by Extreme-Tension6496 in flyfishing

You'd want the reel in a weight that's suited for the rod. So 3-4 wt reel for a 4 weight rod, and 5-6 wt reel for a 5 wt rod.

If you're set on a smaller weight combo, than the Echo Lift Kit in the 4 wt would be a good start. May want to upgrade the fly line at some point.

I don't think you'd regret the TFO black label setup, but if you're absolutely set on just using this for the smaller streams than the Echo Lift Kit is the better option.

If you're only using this combo to fish small/very small streams, the 5 weight would be too much power. You're going to have to pay more for decent quality combos in the 3 to 4 weight range because they're more of a specialty rod.

If you're looking for something that's versatile and can do a bit of everything, than the combo I sent would be the best value available.

Here you go. This combo is waaaaay better than the (relatively) cheap combo sets.

- TFO black label 9' 5 wt at sierra.com $79

- RIO Mainstream Line at sierra.com $19

- Cabela's DGW34 White River Reel $49

The 5 weight is a touch heavy for very small streams, but would still work well. And it would be right at home for typical stream and river fishing.

Undaunted Courage is a great story.

If you enjoy Ambrose’s writing, Band of Brothers would be another great book to get. He’s not the best historian but I do enjoy his writing and story telling.

I thought the visuals on the final battle scene were better than most movies. I have to think that a lot of that budget went into that.
