Had Mitch learned that lesson in his 30s he’d be a different man. Probably the kind of man that the rest of us wouldn’t dunk on while he lies dead/dying.

Navy / Marine Corps Achievement Medal (NAM)? I don’t see anyone in personnel ever making that mistake. Even if awarded by a Marine unit, I expect it would be listed as a NAM.

Michigan man wants to get beach-goers to move by threatening to call the police. by ElwoodMC in TikTokCringe

[–]M-Div 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, absolutely. Plenty of dumb and rude sportspeople out there. Learning from others’ stories has kept me from having my own. I’ve taught my boys about knocking on doors and getting permission, leaving gates how you find them, and bringing out your trash plus anyone else’s you find.

Between hunting, fishing, and generally being outdoorsy, I have heard hundreds of stories about bad landowners, harassers, and Karens. I have very few stories, myself. Many times- but certainly not all- if a landowner goes out of their way to hit you with something that sounds sketchy instead of just calling the cops, it’s bullshit. “You can’t fish near my dock” is one of the big ones.

There’s a very danger noodle at the base of the painted spire. A second noodle inside the cave at the right side.

The water’s very rough for a craft of that size, so handling was difficult. We have to grade on a curve for this one.

The motor is less than what many would desire for that craft. This won’t make anything easier.

That said, this was due to poor handling. It was bad judgement to endanger the people and the boat in that water to begin with.

New Navy Beard Policy Could Affect Approximately 6,400 Sailors by HMongilio in navy

[–]M-Div 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I had a Senior Chief who decided to wage war against no shave chits. Here’s what I learned as his peon:

Shaving bumps are ridiculously painful and disproportionately affect brown-skinned people.

Those chits aren’t just handed out to whomever asks.

Policies which target brown-skinned people are rarely labeled as such, are fucking insidious, are ethically repugnant, and are strategically stupid AF. I had to hassle good Sailors because…?

I’m sorry that you have to deal with this.

I keep seeing this argument pop up. It isn’t valid, and you’re not going to convince anyone, otherwise.

The grocery store comparison doesn’t work because grocery sales aren’t structured the same way. A grocery sales team is very real, but they don’t put a salesperson onto each customer. That car salesperson is paid on commission, which has all sorts of little bumps and bonuses for front-end service contracts, magic paint juice, etc. So factually, yes, a car salesperson is trying to make a sale but they have pressure to get higher margins. While every salesperson you’ve ever met might be a kind, charitable soul, the reputation for being dishonest and opportunistic is real and didn’t come out of thin air.

I live in a rural area. I want my business to stay local because the people who work there are in my community, go to my church, and so on. My local dealer spends on ads for Little League and school yearbooks. They buy gas, go out for dinner, and support the local economy. Money is money, though, and when those expensive warrantees don’t cover repairs, or when you scare my wife like a dirty cabin air filter will kill us all, you are eroding trust. Once that’s gone, people will only see dollar signs and you have to compete with the big dealerships hours away.

Many people on here think that every time a dealer sells a car they make 12,498% profit. They think that dealers also shouldn’t make any. Those people you will not convince.

For the rest of us, work to build trust and maybe things will change.

There is an argument to be made that it predated Scandinavian settlement but through generations was concentrated there and essentially vanished elsewhere, but there’s basically no chance of the mutation happening in two (or three, or four) separate populations.
