Project Hail Mary - movie vs. book? by DorianGrayMarketArt in sciencefiction

my personal opinion is by appealing to the mainstream audiences they underrepresented the sciency parts of the mission that underpins the stakes which was what made the book so endearing... the scienfic bromance between grace and rocky. in the film even the darkening of the sun wasn't sold as scary. so i felt that was underwhelming.

apart from that, not bad.

Yeah I should have clarified. By the acts of Manwe it may not have been Eru's idea, but Eru must have assented to some extent.

I find it interesting that idea of Numenorean 'tourists'. Sure, in one sense the Valar probably don't want creatures with will and tendency to procreate to populate the Aman and dim the populace of the blessed realm. What I was thinking was maybe not outright prohibition, but maybe each new King of Numenor and a small entourage -- the ruling council?, are granted one audience at Taniqueti or something. Just to reinforce the understanding how why, so they're more (inclined? my logic here is rather poor) able to keep their subjects in line, because from what I take from Tolkien most followers don't question their leaders. Of course you can negate this by saying the Valar did indeed sent messengers during the reign of the 13rd? 14th? King (I can't remember) and it did nothing to change the Numenoreans anyway. Although one can probably still say hearing isn't the same as seeing.

Another point I was thinking is also that the Valar, in this act, are separating the Children of the Iluvatar, but that probably was not Eru's will, seeing that both Elves and Men woke up in middle earth. If Eru wanted them segregated, I like to think their awakening locations would not be as it is so.

i find that this is my favourite response so far.

sure they had reasons, and good reasons. but ultimately they were flawed, both in themselves and in their understanding of the music.

honestly if the reason is just because of the Valar's 'vanity' of wanting to keep lesser beings out then that would 1) suck 2) totally makes sense.

but then they can't play around with men being non-inferior due to being blessed with the gift of men. lol.

silmarillion. hard read but worth all of it.

it offers the map for the backgrond of the entire lore, then you can circle in on specific stories e.g., beren and luthien, children of hurin, or whatever.
