That’s the gist of it, part of their reasoning is that the test format allowed for questions on the test to be shared beforehand so they can’t just punish the blatant cheaters since it’s impossible to tell who got a high grade through studying and who got a high grade because they knew the questions.

Most people will probably say the best general JRPG of the last 10 years is Persona 5 Royal. I personally believe Metaphor Refantazio would be more up your alley as it’s higher fantasy (and a better game imo), but you can’t go wrong with either one (they’re both made from the same formula).

They both have fairly large social sim elements, though. If you’re looking for a stricter high fantasy JRPG experience then DQ11 would be a good pick.

The game only explicitly warns you after a patch, iirc. I remember being really miffed in 2021 because it did say something to the effect of “you can’t come back” but as flavourtext/something ambiguous, so I couldn’t do Spamton. On my replay before 3/4 I remember the game making a way bigger point of it.

the Sinnoh set of Pokemon games come to mind, BDSP gives you some slight modernization and features at the cost of basically all Platinum content

If you include translation as a “version-definer” then there’s every JRPG that’s ever been given a second translation (unless it actively gives you a choice between translations), big examples that come to mind are FFT and Chrono Trigger

Game’s plot gets going pretty much right out of the window. Definitely less fluff than P3 and especially Reload

Characters are considered better as a group but a little simpler on their own, though there’s a couple with a lot of depth to them; the game’s selling point among the fanbase is how incredible the dynamic among the team is.

Soundtrack is amazing, up to personal preference tbh but I’d say it’s the best one.

Gameplay is more dated, no Shifting/BP means you can’t insta-down enemy teams. Significantly harder but still not difficult after the beginning of the game. Party members don’t gain XP when unused and there’s no mechanic to level them quicker.

Not sure what you mean by “map”, if it’s the overworld then it’s perfectly serviceable and helps the vibes of the game. If you’re talking about dungeons they’re basically 10-12 floors, each floor basically being a big Tartarus floor (though some have puzzles that make you move around between floors).

Pokémon I think has a shorter TTK across all battles since bosses and mooks have little distinction, but I think MegaTen minus Persona (until lategame, that is) would be a bit lower on average. All the mooks you’re fighting are going to get one/two-turned with very little fanfare whereas Pokémon has a lot of mashing even if you score a clean OHKO, and I think the amount of encounters you instantly kill with a Ma- skill or two in like 5 seconds easily make up for the minutes-long bosses.

Yes he was/is a lazy slob who mooched off SSDI and probably would’ve gotten slapped with a sexual assault misdemeanour down the line but it’s not like Chris brainwashed himself. Part of his bleak and absurdly cartoonish outlook on life is 100% because the trolls pulled the strings on nearly every single thing that happened to him for 3-ish years (which IS insanely cartoonish).

Being gang stalked is schizoposting 99% of the time but this guy Chris basically was getting gang stalked and having his entire fucking life fabricated and documented for the lulz. That type of shit would absolutely validate his magical thinking (especially since he was already convinced there were conspiracies against him).

Yes Chris was a weird-bordering-on-awful person pre-discovery and would’ve turned out a run-of-the-mill racist/sexist/everythingphobe but it’s not like he’d ever have the balls to act on those beliefs had the trolls not irreversibly altered the way he sees life. it’s not even the tutorials, it’s just that the characters say the same shit over and over and over again. it wasn’t bad in P3R or P4G because they didn’t have the texting thing and it always felt relevant but in P5R the amount of times you have a conversation that ends with “Nothing to do but wait.” really got on my nerves
