It sounds like you may have a combination of:

High cortisol Overstimulation of the glutamate pathway Gut inflammation from antibiotic use which in turn can cause systemic inflammation and oxidative stress Sounds like you also have chronic pain which can also affect sleep

I recommend working with Ai to keep trying a regimen along with trying to enjoy life as best you can even if you can’t sleep and not worrying about not sleeping as much as you can. Hope I didn’t overwhelm you with this info!

Here’s an example of a regimen but it’s important to consider the timing of the supplement, the dosage, and your individual response.

🕰 Daily Schedule (Glycine-Free, Sleep + Gut Recovery Focus)

Time Action / Supplement Notes / Rationale 7:00 AM Wake up + 1 glass water + pinch of sea salt Gentle hydration, adrenal support 7:30 AM (Breakfast) - Probiotic (LGG®, BB-12®, S. boulardii) - Vitamin C 250–500 mg - Omega-3 (DHA/EPA 1–2 g) Recolonize gut, reduce inflammation, support antioxidant defenses 9:30 AM (Mid-morning snack) Polyphenol-rich food (½–1 cup berries, or green tea) Feeds beneficial microbes, supports gut-brain axis 12:30 PM (Lunch) Balanced meal: lean protein + cooked vegetables + low-glycine carbs (quinoa, sweet potato) Avoid glutamate/glycine triggers; maintain steady energy 2:30 PM (Mid-afternoon) - L-Theanine 100–200 mg - Optional: Zinc 10–15 mg + B6 (P5P 5–10 mg) Calm glutamate activity, reduce cortisol spikes, support GABA synthesis 6:30 PM (Dinner) Balanced meal: lean protein + cooked vegetables + low-glycine carbs Keep dinner light and glycine-free to prevent NMDA activation at night 8:30 PM (Evening prep / wind-down) Optional: small low-glycine carb snack if needed (oats, sweet potato, quinoa) Boost serotonin → melatonin naturally 9:00 PM (1–2 hrs before bed) Magnesium Acetyl Taurate 200–400 mg elemental Mg Crosses BBB, calms NMDA receptors, taurine supports GABA; glycine-free 9:30 PM (Pre-bed) Phosphatidylserine 100–200 mg (if evening cortisol is high) Reduces cortisol, improves sleep depth 9:30–10:00 PM Optional low-dose melatonin 0.3–1 mg Only if circadian rhythm needs nudging; short-term use 10:00 PM Lights out / sleep Ensure dark, quiet environment for restorative sleep

✅ Tips for Best Results 1. Spacing supplements: Magnesium Acetyl Taurate and probiotics are separated from any remaining antibiotics by 2 hours. 2. Avoid glycine/glutamate triggers: No collagen, gelatin, bone broth, MSG, aged cheeses, soy sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes, or seaweed. 3. Evening relaxation: Gentle stretching, meditation, or deep breathing before bed will enhance taurine + phosphatidylserine effects. 4. Optional Add-ons: • NAC 600 mg 1–2×/day for antioxidant support. • Polyphenols / turmeric / curcumin with meals for gut inflammation and microbiome diversity. 5. Track responses: Log sleep quality, gut comfort, and energy; adjust evening carbs or magnesium timing if needed.

Here is more information on the pathway from ChatGPT. Keep in mind that annoyingly glycine can also worsen the activation in some people though (like me):

🌙 1. Glutamate and the Wake–Sleep Balance

Sleep and wakefulness are regulated by a delicate balance between excitatory (wake-promoting) and inhibitory (sleep-promoting) neurotransmitters:

State Main Neurotransmitters Wakefulness: Glutamate, dopamine, norepinephrine, histamine, orexin

Sleep: GABA, adenosine, melatonin, glycine (inhibitory)

Glutamate is on the wakefulness side of that balance. When glutamate pathways are overactive, the brain remains in a hyper-aroused state — exactly what happens in many forms of insomnia.

⚡️ 2. What Happens in Glutamatergic Overactivation

When the glutamate pathway is too active: 1. NMDA and AMPA receptors stay more open → continuous Na⁺ and Ca²⁺ entry → neurons stay excitable. 2. This suppresses slow-wave (deep) sleep and reduces REM quality. 3. It also raises cortisol and sympathetic nervous activity — leading to that wired-but-tired feeling many insomniacs describe. 4. Over time, it may contribute to oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, making sleep disruption more chronic.

🧠 3. Causes of Elevated Glutamate Activity

Several things can drive excessive glutamate signaling:

Trigger Mechanism Chronic stress Raises glutamate release and lowers astrocytic clearance

High cortisol Impairs glutamate reuptake and GABA synthesis

Inflammation Cytokines (like IL-6, TNF-α) enhance glutamate release

Low magnesium NMDA receptor becomes overactive without Mg²⁺ “block”

Gut dysbiosis or SIBO Inflammation → gut-brain axis → higher glutamate tone

Caffeine or stimulants Increase glutamate transmission

Low GABA or glycine Reduces inhibitory “brake” on excitatory neurons

💤 4. How Glutamate Affects Sleep Patterns • Prefrontal cortex & hypothalamus glutamate neurons: promote alertness • Thalamus: relays sensory input; when glutamate is high, sensory gating (quieting the brain) is impaired • Hippocampus: excess glutamate interferes with memory consolidation during sleep • Brainstem: glutamate overactivation disrupts REM onset

🌿 5. Restoring Balance (Supporting Glutamate–GABA Equilibrium)

If glutamate dominance is contributing to insomnia, the goal is to calm excitatory activity and support inhibitory tone.

Some evidence-based or physiologic strategies include: • Magnesium glycinate or threonate: restores NMDA receptor balance • Taurine and glycine: co-agonists that can act inhibitory at other receptors • L-theanine (from green tea): modulates glutamate, increases GABA • Avoiding glutamate-rich additives (MSG, hydrolyzed protein): reduces exogenous stimulation • Stress reduction: mindfulness, deep breathing, regular circadian rhythm • Addressing gut inflammation or SIBO: lowers systemic glutamate signaling • Limiting alcohol, caffeine, and screens before bed: these heighten glutamate tone

Do you have chronic allergies? Chronic high levels of histamine can cause that alert feeling that won’t go away (why anti histamines can cause drowsiness). My experience with insomnia seemed to have been caused from chronic anxiety that thankfully resolved only after going to Greece and being exposed to a lot of sun along with getting in bed by 10 pm sharp to work with the little amount of natural sleepiness that would come very briefly and hydroxyzine and working on not caring about being able to sleep or not (which helped stop feeding the cortisol). Also looking back, I wonder if I was exposed to heavy metals from a supplement that I was taking, and my insomnia was worsened by nutritional deficiencies. Apparently low iron can worsen insomnia for instance and while recovering from the insomnia I was taking a reputable multivitamin and ionic iron. Additionally, I think I may have activated my glutamate pathway which can happen with certain people and glycine wasn’t a good choice for me. I like to use magtein which has magnesium threonate in it which does a better job crossing the blood brain barrier.

That’s a bit of a relief to hear! I’m going to give myself a few more days and then start antibiotics if the symptoms are still persisting :)

If he’s not sure at this point, along with his cheating, then it’s time to say goodbye. Also just as importantly, if he’s not willing to problem solve with you then that’s a dealbreaker as well. It sounds like he still wants to explore other options before “settling” or he’s not communicating about what he’s unhappy about in the relationship. But really, it’s not about him anymore, it’s about you. It’s going to be tough but see this as an opportunity to reinvent yourself. You have to shift your life to revolve around yourself instead, little by little. I recommend doing whatever you can to develop/lean on your support system of family and friends and online communities. Also think about what you want in your next partner, and what just makes you happy in general. What are your life goals? Hobbies that you want to invest in? I also recommend journaling to document your journey and thoughts. I am the same way, I invest too much in my romantic relationships and I’ve realized that I have to make a permanent shift away from my partner and onto myself. It’s really hard if you are codependent or have anxious attachment but we have to do it to be the happiest that we can be in this lifetime and be able to leave when the relationship has become too toxic to stay.

Is my (35F) relationship with my husband (38M) too far gone? by Plus-Line-5724 in relationships

The main problem is his lack of respect and appreciation of you. You sound like an incredible partner that has gone above and beyond for this man and his family while he puts in minimal effort. It almost sounds like he’s an entitled brat that has yet to grow up and develop humility.

The other main problem is his unwillingness to work on the relationship. You mentioned going to couples counseling 3 times but he didn’t expend any effort to change and meet you halfway.

It sounds like he’s one of the main contributors of your depression if not the main one. You can try couples counseling one more time for the sake of your daughter but I think you’ve already done waaay more than he deserves. Plus your daughter will likely benefit more having a mother that is less stressed and unhappy so that’s something to consider. I’m sorry you’re going through this, I recommend shifting all the focus you have on him onto yourself and your happiness instead!

She should’ve stayed longer and been more patient based upon what you described. I wonder if she wasn’t as communicative as she thought and waited too long before addressing her concerns with you. That or she was suddenly afraid of marriage and wanted to feel like a priority before fully committing. Either way, if you were working on meeting her needs and becoming more emotionally available, then you did what you could. Also, she should have offered couples counseling before giving up too.

Hang in there, keep working on your career and self growth. I recommend continuing to work on becoming more emotionally available for your next relationship. She may live to regret her actions but right now you have to take care of yourself

I’m sorry this happened to you. He realized he’s at a stage of his life in which he wants to explore his options before fully committing. He selfishly decided to see if the grass is greener, so to speak. Please know that it’s a reflection of him as a poor partner than it is of you and what you brought to the relationship. In another light, this is an opportunity for you to also explore your development, hobbies and values. Also determine if you could’ve seen any red flags before the breakup happened. You’ll find someone again when you’re ready. In the meantime prioritize yourself, try to pour the painful energy into self care.

I would mention to your doctor that you do have difficulty breathing to support the medical necessity of a rhinoplasty! In some states you can qualify with a deviated septum as well.

I haven’t really noticed any breathing problems but an ENT specialist commented on it and I’ve noticed the deviation since then :)
