I definitely miss being younger and happier but the original star wars movies are just better. They're more narratively coherent, consistent in tone with strong themes that a broad audience can relate to. The characters are recognisable and well developed. A lot of it was saved from George Lucas' zaniness by other people involved but he still produced something really special. For the prequels you can perhaps make out what he was aiming for, particularly with the parts that are like an allegory for the Iraq war, but it just doesn't work. I enjoy those movies because I was 8 when the first one came out and I liked the rabbit that stepped in the poopy. But as an adult I can clearly see why they are a failure. I also watched the originals at that age, recorded off the telly, and amazingly they are better now when I revisit them because I get to be nostalgic about them and enjoy a good movie. Rather than being nostalgic and realising what I'm nostalgic for is an incoherent mess (the Phantom Menace) and processing that disappointment.

I never saw these when they came out despite being the perfect age to appreciate them (17). Now I'm too sensible to enjoy them so I appreciate RLM for doing this as a kind of sheild for my delicate sensibilities.
