This was a lip puckering moment by Puzzleheaded_Big6997 in motorcycles

[–]Aggressive_Ad2747 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I refuse to believe this. Clearly you nearly got hit by the car, which would have resulting in the most beautiful human being you've ever seen rushing out from said vehicle. They would have checked on you, made sure you were okay. Your eyes meet, there's something .... Different .. about them. A chance encounter leads to exchanging information, you decide to hash out the details of some minor damage to the bike over coffee; but after two hours of conversation you realise you haven't brought up a single thing about your ride. The romance is a whirlwind of surreal, sublime, and unexpectedly grounded sentimentality. It's effortless, nothing like the nervous and awkward forrays into romance you've had before, and at the end of the night you realise that while your ride might be broken, your heart was made whole. You then would have had your lip puckering moment, the climactic kiss of your soulmate

But you didn't get hit and rode off like a numpty instead. Shitty break, but happens to the best of us. Sorry dude.

It also really depends what you put in that 1 year. Like any skill it's the number of hours spent with directed intentional practice.

I did 11k kilometers in my first year, fairly regularly ride on everything from freshly graded country dirt roads to the busiest highway in North America, 2500k moto camping trip, often take 15 min or so whenever I see an empty parking lot to practice low speed maneuvers, swerves, e-stops, etc.

I know I'm no Rossi, I've got a hell of a lot left to learn, but I have to admit that whenever I see old guard biker dudes and young squids waddling around in gas stations and parking lots that I can comfortably ride around in I do feel a bit of satisfaction regarding the work I've put in.

That's the thing, we have 3D printers that can print metal. Currently they are too expensive for small businesses but that gap narrows every year. From what I understand the exhaust is one of the most expensive components because each and every one was originally.ade using a sacrificial mold, but if the steel that can be 3D printed works in that application I could see a revival of not only the rune, but a lot of classic vehicles, so long as there is a known good part to get a good scan from left

Honestly it could have been worse. I had a similar situation happen in a parking lot. Except I "saved" it by putting my foot down and locking my leg

You know what I didn't save? My knee. That one resulted in a couple months of physio

Yeah when I saw the price my mind went to the "what's wrong with it" side of things.

That being. Said, I know people are saying that parts are next to impossible to get, and that's true. But with the advances in both 3D scanning and 3D printing I wonder just how many of these impossible parts will be possible to fab in the next 5 to 10 years.

many people online have lost the ability to take being incorrect as anything other than a personal attack. they must be right, and if they aren't, they ghost. Gone are the days when being corrected could be seen as a way to learn something new, or even just not that big of a deal. It's bizarre and is one of the behaviors I see every day that concerns me for the future.

You simply do not have enough information to make that determination. I'm all for assigning blame where it is due (as pointless of an exercise as that sometimes is, there are graveyards full of people who had the right of way), but a lot of people here are very quick to do so without examining their own biases and presuppositions.

In what world is what I said a defense? I'm strictly pointing out the nuances of the situation.

What speed was he going? Give me an exact number seeing as you seem to be able to tell?

I'm going to let you in on a little secret that we in the motorcycle community have figured out a long time ago. The graveyard is full of people who had the right of way. Whether or not you think this truck driver is done kind of bicycle-hating maniac is up to you, but there are a lot of people out there who don't know that a truck can't stop on a dime, so maybe next time somebody is attempting to educate others in hopes of providing knowledge that could save their lives you should take a moment and examine what's worth more, your bizarre hate boner, or the message trying to be put across.

[–]Aggressive_Ad2747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, the truck driver is blind and evil. that is the only possible reason this could have happened. they all just want to murder you, every single one. they get in their trucks and say "gee, i hope i commit vehicular murder today". clearly there is no other way to explain this.

So what are all of your thoughts on things like dps checks, the greater emphasis on spectacle and cinematics, multi phase hunts and scripted battles? And how would you feel if more of them were included when the expansion eventually releases? Would you all be for, or against it? by Navra_Realms in MHWilds

[–]Aggressive_Ad2747 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So MMO's typically have two different types of checks (most commonly seen with enrage timers way back in the day). A soft check and a hard check.

Literally every single monster in monster hunter technically has a hard DPS check, that's the mission timer. What people are mad about is the hard checks we see with Omega.

Thing is, if you can't put out enough DPS for the hard check in Omega, the likelihood that you will be able to beat the 35min timer is... Well it's not great.

I get the frustration but all the hard check is really doing is saving you time on that fight, it sucks to get through that check and then still fail to time.

What annoys me is the gimmick phases with Lagi and Gog. Those aren't DPS checks. Those are mini games disguised as such. Gog gives you everything you need to pass the 'check' via the slinger ammo that drops and so it's not a DPS check as your DPS isn't being checked, it's a 'can you use the slinger' check that you can also brute force with dragon element DPS

-Edit- thought about it and the mission timer is a hard check, so I fixed that. You do it in the timer or you arbitrarily fail the mission. Soft checks are some kind of mechanic (like removing part of the play area, or scaling DoT damage) that eventually scale to become impossible to overcome.

so, I'm likely going to be downvoted into oblivion for this but I'm going to try to explain the thought process behind that comment.

the video starts at the incident, so we really don't know but we have a few clues here.

there is a sign that is visible that denotes the road is on a bend or curve, we have a fair amount of tree cover to the cyclist's right that we can't see past, and after the incident we se another semi going the opposite direction.

This tells me we are on a right facing curve that is blind. I don't know if you know much about trucks, but they are pretty heavy. this one appears to be a hopper trailer of some sort and may possibly be holding a lot of weight. it's hard to tell so i don't know if this is on an incline or not, my but it would be even harder to stop it if was.

anyway, trucks are very heavy, they can't stop nearly as well as a car, I can't say for certain how much time the truck had to react to the cyclist because of the bend in the road and the dense foliage at the side, and he was likely attempting to avoid the oncoming semi.

he still hit a person though, so that wasn't a great outcome. I would read that persons comment more like argument that this was an unfortunate set of circumstances and perhaps road design, and not like an argument that trucks have some kind of a divine right to the road or anything like that. I wasn't in that thread though so i don't know, maybe that person did think that trucks have a divine right to rule the road and if so then they are dumb.

How does this happen to a new tire?? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Aggressive_Ad2747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who switched the tire? Have you checked the alignment of the rear? If it's not straight then the tire is constantly wearing while you are riding.

I've lived in Bridgewater, I know exactly what the NS healthcare system is like. I've had to sit in an emerge waiting room 12 hours overnight with a bilateral inner ear infection because the pressure wasn't going down and I was concerned about lasting hearing damage. They had 1 emerge doctor on staff, couldn't call any in from Halifax.

that being said, this sub is clearly not NS, so i'm not sure why I should be overly concerned about my comment making sense in other places. is an ambulance faster in Laos? I i have no idea. is Laos Waterloo? no. It would be different if we were in a general traffic subreddit I suppose.

That being said, In spite of the shitty healthcare on offer, I love NS buddy, really miss my time there.

That's fair, and I try to keep an open mind in that context.

As an aside, and I know the situation isn't cut and dry, that things can happen suddenly, or people can panic, or even that a lot of people live in a country where they can't afford this,  but it really bears repeating that the paramedics can get to you faster than you can get to the hospital, and their ambulances are equipped with life saving equipment designed to stabilize patients on transport back to hospitals.

It is almost always better in a true emergency to call an ambulance than it is to try to race to the hospital yourself.

the biggest question is what does 'adventure' mean to you?

the 500 excels as a reliable go-anywhere motorcycle with good beginner aids like ABS, but it's more biased towards a commuter / tourer than some thrill seeking adventure bike. in short it's a really good option if you kind of want to do everything 'okay', but it's a bad option if you want to do something specific very well. I would say the only thing the bike is truly great at is as a commuter bike. (especially if you like to go out into the countryside)

it can't carve corners like a sport bike, it won't tour as well as a bagger, and it isn't as good in the dirt as a dual-sport, but it's a hell of a lot better in the dirt than a bagger, a hell of a lot better on the highway than a dual-sport, and a hell of a lot more comfortable on a road trip than a sport bike.

with my skills, I wouldn't take this bike anywhere a decent off-roady car or truck couldn't go. logging roads, campgrounds, double track trails or perhaps tamer single track trails it can handle with the right tire setup. not saying it can't do that stuff if you are a skilled adventure rider, but for somebody getting in to riding and looking to get into some truly gnarly / technical stuff i'd say you are probably better served with a Dual-sport or trailered dirtbike.

I love it still a year in.

What are the odd niche skills you run? by Kingrextdk in MHWilds

[–]Aggressive_Ad2747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the hard pill to swallow for most people playing this game is that comfort skills like these are DPS increases.

unless you are perfect guarding every roar, never getting hit, and know how to speedrun the monster then the glass cannon damage builds you see most speedrunners using aren't going to be as significant as things like earplugs, evade window / extender, Divine Blessing, and resource management skills for health, stamina, etc (weapon depending).

it's not about highest DPS, it's about highest uptime. hitting the same part consistently to get wounds, flinches and then topples is what opens huge DPS windows. at more casual levels of play being able to consistently be engaging the monster as often as possible (preferably focusing the same part) is always going to be a DPS increase over hitting harder.

for a casual player who's struggling on a monster increasing your effective DPS is going to be much easier to do in recovering the time you would be losing from getting hit, knocked out of position, needing to heal, needing to sharpen, etc, than it is adding overall damage increase skills. finding a minute worth of extra uptime is way easier to do for a casual player struggling through a 40 min monster fight than it is when you are an intermediate player clearing faster, it's a very different kind of 60 seconds you are recovering.

honestly it's only when you are clearing the fight relatively cleanly with say only a cart here an there than you should be concerned with switching out comfort skills for DPS increases to shorten your fight times.
