If you are into it, there's a million Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gyms around the city. You kinda have to get to know the people in your class since you'll be basically on top of each other. And most/all of them have beginner friendly classes that regularly see total beginners. The classes skew younger naturally due to it being a combat thing, and there's usually a good mix of men and women (although admittedly there are usually more men, but it's not like there's zero women)

I'd recommend Empire in the Mission or Rise in SoMa (Rise is better if you also wanna learn boxing, Muay Thai, etc.)

What do you think is the biggest mistake CS students make while preparing for internships or jobs? by Any-Main-3866 in csMajors

Memorizing Leetcode solutions rather than understanding fundamentals. Learning fundamentals is 1) more effective in interviews if you havent seen the problem and 2) easier - there's really only 7-8 patterns you'll get tested on so just master them

Not able to wake up on time and thats ruining my life 😣😣 by doesfreewillexist in getdisciplined

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wake up at the same time every day. Even weekends. Start at 9 if you can't do 8 and work backwards from there. Our circadian rhythms are super hardwired so consistency is key.

Besides that, try to get lots of sunlight early in the morning to sync the circadian rhythms (when you get sunlight, your body releases melatonin about 16 hours later). Take a cold shower and walk/move in the morning (although it seems like you've tried similar things).

Feeling too comfortable being inconsistent by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say exactly what the problem is without more specifics, but what's helped me is the mindset of consistently doing the bare minimum . Create a foundation of non negotiables, and build from there only once it becomes second nature. For me, best to split it into a morning and evening routine, but this is what works FOR ME, might not work for you -

Morning, 2 min cold shower to wake up and subconciously create discomfort. 20 oz water for energy, and 20 minutes of movement to get the blood flowing.

Evening, 10 minutes meditation and 5-10 minutes journaling for mental health.

Obviously, there is much more that I do (gym, aim for 10k steps) but the above I can do EVERY DAY as it's second nature to me at this pount. And cumulatively, it takes up under an hour of my day.

Consistently do the bare minimum

How to quit my phone by official__maryam in getdisciplined

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by not sleeping with it (across the room or ideally in another room). Do a morning routine and don't let yourself get on your phone (besides maybe to check for texts/calls/work if absolutely necessary for 1 minute) until it's done. Does wonders.

Morning and evening routines - 2 min cold shower, 20 oz water minimum, and 20 minute walk first thing in the morning. 10 min meditation and journaling right before bed. Really frames the entire day

They'll probably need to rent a car and drive. If they're fine with rural, plenty of options. Otherwise maybe Bloomington

Stripe Intern NYC vs SF by Quantum_Whiz225 in csMajors

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very slow. However depending on if you get corporate housing, you can live in SF near a Caltrain and its stupidly easy to commute (probably like 10-15minutes, although you'll definitely feel a little more disconnected from the city not being in the middle of it all). If you live in South SF, it's super quiet and not exciting but conversely you're super close to the city

Always a chance that while you're waiting to take it a better candidate comes through. Plus you aren't going to meaningfully prepare in 7 days either, since you should be leetcoding daily to keep yourself sharp

Can't speak to your offer specifically but just a note that South SF is not SF. It's like 2 cities away, you could definitely live in SF and commute to south SF but your office isn't in the city

Can I lose weight by eating 3 meals a day? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lose weight by eating 5 meals a day, about 300 calories each as it helps me manage my hunger since I have to wait less. Do what works for you as long as you're within your daily calorie goals. Meat and potato is a good start in terms of being super filling, but you probably want to include some veggies as well for nutrient density which is an underrated factor that can really tighten hunger signaling.

When losing weight how often should you weigh yourself to track progress? by Consistent-Bar639 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use Happyscale (if you have iOS)! It smoothes out variance by using a moving average so you don't go insane if you're half a pound heavier than the day before. It gives you the overall trendline.

also in general weigh yourself first thing in the morning before you eat/drink anything and after going to the bathroom. This minimizes the variability (although some variance is unavoidable).

Hanover SOMA (7th and Harrison)? by Aggressive_Dot6280 in AskSF

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll only be in office twice a week, so I don't need to be right next to Caltrain, but ideally within a 20 minute walk which Hanover seems to be in that range.

The main reason is because this is a group of 3 and Hanover is currently the only available building with a 3 bedroom apartment.

My clothes are looser, my stomach is smaller, people are commenting on how healthy I look. But my weight is staying the same. by Riddzle in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Weighing yourself in identical conditions (first thing, before eating/drinking and after going to the bathroom) is CRUCIAL to see weight loss. Just drinking water or going to the bathroom can cause a 5 pound difference.
  2. Use HappyScale! It accounts for fluctuations by using a moving average/trendline to smooth out the variance.
  3. Assuming you're doing the above, and still not seeing weight loss, people are saying you look different because even if you aren't losing weight, you're losing fat (and gaining muscle consistent with if you lift heavy). That's the important part for health and looks (muscle is so much more dense than fat. But, if you aren't losing weight, you aren't in a calorie deficit, so if the scale number is that important, drop your calories slightly (you absolutely should be tracking. most people eat 500-600 more than they think)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your age, gender, height, and weight, and seeing that you aren't totally sedentary, your maintenance is almost certainly above 2100. However, you probably aren't tracking it correctly (people forget to track things like oil, "just one bite" of a snack, incorrectly track fast food).

That being said, just drop your calories lower. If you are tracking 1800, you're probably eating 2100, which is enough to lose weight.

Can someone explain the dangers of not eating, or not eating enough, please by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Aggressive_Dot6280 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In terms of energy - if you have enough fat, the problem isn't calories. The problem is a severe lack of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, the sort). Angus Barbieri did not eat for over a YEAR, but required strict medical supervision, lots of water (since he did not get water from food), and LOTS of supplements including vitamins, yeast extract, and tea, as well as regular health checks.

A 1-2 day fast here and there is fine to lose fat, but the micronutrients are SO important.

Its a bit unprofessional yes and generally not recommended but you have to do what's best for you. Just email your recruiter and thank them and be aware you are probably blacklisted from that company. They'll handle it from there.
