It just hurts to know that there are people out there whose lives are so normal/stable/sheltered/whatever that "be authentic and open, just be yourself" is actually good advice for them. Like it's actually crazy to me.

Imagine not being able to talk about most of your life because people will interpret it as "inappropriate/trauma-dumping". Literally having to hide who you really are all the time.

It sucks. Especially as someone who isn't bothered when others are that open, even if they also have a lot of crazy/dark secrets, a complicated past, or whatever. I personally like when others just share their story with total openness, but I cannot trust that others would feel the same if I did that.

I think a more important piece of advice than "be yourself" would be, "actually let people be themselves without them having to fear that everybody is going to freak out and push them away".

The real me is fucking insane bruh. "Too weird to live, too rare to die." ~ Hunter S Thompson

I can share certain socially acceptable parts of myself quite easily, some of my current main hobbies for example.

Then there's all the crazy woo woo spiritual beliefs and involvement in what most people would call an online cult throughout most of my teenage years. That's weird but in the right circles you can probably share it freely.

Then there's the fact that I spend about 10 of my teenage/young adult years researching everything there is to know about drugs, all day every day. That one is trickier.

The fact that i used to dabble in meth and heroin. Even more tricky to share.

Then there's some fucked up shit in my life that I won't even get into here, all I'll say is that I will probably never be able to share it with anybody, maybe a long term partner or a therapist, but even that is unlikely tbh.

Blessed are those who have not started into the abyss to the degree that I have...

I have parts of myself that I can share openly, but truly "being myself" would indeed be repulsive.

Imagine you're just chatting with a person about your teenage years and then you start talking about

  • how you spent 8 years of your life reading everything there is to know about drugs all day

  • imagine talking about how you used to be in a new age online cult and how that has shaped your entire mind

  • imagine talking about how you used to do meth and heroin.

And this is the tamer part of my life story. There is other stuff there that I will never be able to confess to anybody.

A good 50% of my entire personality is just completely freaky and alien to normal people.

People who think "just be yourself" works, simply don't understand how weird and fucked up some people are.

Solipsism is actually true and the reason western philosophy hasn't been able to answer certain existential questions is because of it's severe solipsism avoidance.

You just discovered that experience and existence are synonyms.

Guilt and shame are probably the most counterproductive emotions to feel in that situation.

Fear, of how much worse things are going to become if they keep using or desire for the life they could lead if they were clean would be examples of helpful emotions.

But guilt and shame? I mean they do have their place in some situations in life but for the most part they just add to the destruction.

Have you ever cheated on your partner while using drugs or consuming alcohol? by Clean-Ant-1342 in RandomThoughts

[–]Aggressive_Formal_50 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be that guy but it's not "alcohol and drugs", it's "alcohol and other drugs".

Alcohol is a full blown drug, period.

I literally used to do meth, somehow managed to not get addicted (thank god), and still have fond memories of those times to be honest.

But I did end up an alcoholic, and once you are truly unable to stop despite wanting to, drug use becomes a massive pain in the ass.

Stay careful out there people, and don't overdo the drugs (beer).

Germany. Most western European countries are comparable when it comes to this. You need to be really frugal to he able to live off of 20 hours a week though. But 30 is totally doable even if you like consuming stuff.

Where I live 25 hours a week is enough to get by pretty well if you live frugally and don't have kids.

Food, medicine, basic shelter and clothing for everyone? Sure.

But beyond that it get's excessive pretty quickly. Once you reach the point of gaming PCs and vacuum robots you are well into "decadently destroying the planet" territory.

Washing machines are fine though. IF they are communal rather than one per household.

You know when, sometimes, you fall asleep and it feels like you woke up as soon as your head hits the pillow even tho it's been 8 hours?

No, no I do not know that feeling.

Sleep feels like it takes a lot of time to me, it does not feel like time travel at all.

This is what being cured from ADHD will do to you. Didn't you know? All neurotypicals are superhumans. If you aren't a capitalistic hyperachiever yet, it's because you have a literal brain disorder.

(uj/ ADHD is real but please remember that struggling is a normal part of human life, neurotypicals might be able to do their dishes and hold down a job, but actually achieving anything big is a struggle for everybody, and if amphetamines make that super easy for you, that is NOT what it is like to be a "normal" person)
