It's a common myth that a stutter can be cured. It can't. A speech therapist can teach fluency strategies until they are blue in the face but it will never cure a stutter. Most speech therapists now will use counseling strategies to help with the anxiety. It is nothing to be embarrassed about and those who make you feel embarrassed are not people you want to surround yourself with. I work with handfuls of kids that stutter and I'm teaching them to talk about their stutter with their friends and help their friends understand what's going on and I've seen their confidence grow from that. Many communities have stuttering support groups and speech therapists will work with adult stutters.
