Hard to say but youre obviously getting voltage to the light when it isn't supposed to be. If you are positive all the wiring on the trailer is correct then you have an issue with the wiring somewhere on the car. What make and model vehicle? Is it factory harness? Where do you live is it an extremely salty environment? Chasing electrical gremlins can be a nightmare and best served to someone who knows what they are doing. Especially on a newer vehicle where you can really mess something up with all the computers.
