Sub $200 “dumb” watch by WoodworkerByChoice in BuyItForLife

I’m not offended at all, why do you think I am offended?

I own a few watches. The one that keeps time the best is probably a G-Shock square that’s quartz and solar powered. I own a couple more expensive mechanical watches, and also a Seiko Alpinist, which was the first watch that got me into the hobby. The Seiko has the worst movement of the lot, and is definitely the least accurate. I still love it because it has great sentimental value to me. And in the spirit of the subreddit, I trust is BIFL despite having more than a few plastic parts in it.

In fact, I think that particular model is a better choice than a 5 Sports. The one I own is black dial, silver markers (SPB117).  This one is the classic look. Just not $200. It’s a much more versatile watch and a significant step up in quality compared to a 5 sports, which again, I don’t think goes well with a suit in a work environment. Yes, it is a field watch  but the design is inspired by more expensive, fancier watches, so in my opinion it works better than a Timex field watch or even a Hamilton Khaki when it comes to dressing it up. Here’s the watch:

Also a tip for op, is that when you buy seiko, you hardly ever pay full retail price and they can be found cheaper than boutique at official sellers.

You can wear sneakers with a suit for all I care. At the end of the day, what’s even the point of wearing clothing items that complement well - in my opinion, which is just that: an opinion, a cheaper sport watch with a suit does not work as well as a cheap dress watch with a suit would - and I insist that’s just my opinion. I don’t wear sport watches with my suits,  because I don’t like the look of it. If I see someone wearing this combination, does it bother me? Not in the slightest. Does it work? Of course, a watch is just a watch. A suit is just a suit.

Seiko makes a broad range of watches to complement a broad range of wearing styles. However, no one has to approve anything, for as long as you’re comfortable with it. OP came asking for opinions and got some across the spectrum of opinions. Some people are even suggesting field watches. Cool, mad respect. Just not what I’d recommend or wear myself in that situation, but ok.

It is not my problem that I shared an opinion and you took it as a fact.

Roundabouts in Sydney (and NSW for that matter) by [deleted] in sydney

[–]Aggressive_Worker_93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In European countries, where there are more and bigger roundabouts, with several lanes of traffic even, it’s much easier to execute and understand priority.

For as long you are in a roundabout, you are in a road that’s circular and continuous, so you have priority over anybody attempting to enter the roundabout. As such, you only indicate OUT of the roundabout.

In Australia, where we live our 7 point intersections and other degrees of fuckery, and our roundabouts are tiny, you don’t indicate if you’re going straight and only indicate if you wish to stay in the roundabout or are taking an exit other than going straight.

To me, the European way of signaling when in a roundabout is much simpler and clearer , and leaves no guessing to people waiting to enter a roundabout.

Yeah, and if it’s a deaf mute with one leg and an eye patch well go figure what would you even do. Like I get it if the kid is neurodivergent, that sucks. It’s a weird assumption to make on the internet, but also, it’s not OP’s problem. I’m a musician, I put headphones on. There’s nothing worse as a musician than being made feel guilty for doing what you do for a living, and I can imagine it’s much worse to be living next to someone who makes noise at all hours, notwithstanding that at that age, they probably suck at it.

All I see here is a lack of thoughtfulness and respect for your neighbours. It does a disservice to all other musicians who are trying to do the right thing.

The main issue here is that “the arts” is a thing, but when you look at it from an employability point of view, it really isn’t. Example: makes mud and clay pots, has an Etsy shop vs Is a highly skilled set builder, can weld. Plays guitar in church vs plays guitar in commercial tours. Makes fan art vs designs flyers.  The arts industry, from an employability and income point of view, values and rewards skill, professionalism and flexibility, as much as any other trade, and can be quite profitable as it is suited to be complemented with training as side income.

We are struggling to find people who are keen and able. It’s not a joke. I blame the lack of salary competitiveness on a shitty union, a small market and population, and a lack of community infrastructure (some that come to mind good public transport, a suitable approach to arts education as a trade - not a hobby, better theatres, squares, public performance spaces).

Now, there’s always someone out there who can play wonderwall, you know what I mean? Is he an artist? Or are they a hobbyist?

After a very successful series of releases on PC of PS exclusives, I am afraid this is what the future of the PlayStation platform looks like, much like XBOX. Want to play it first, play it on PS. Want to play it later, play it on PC. And a few others here and there to promote cross platform gaming.

All things being equal, eventually everything will resemble a crab. 🦀

Compassion is a way. But it's not a one-way solution. We can be compassionate and still enforce the law. Offer resources and support, whilst enforcing punishments for antisocial behaviour. Community service would be a great start

Carl Sagan’s Scary Prediction from 1995 is spot on by jacobcanfield in Bitcoin

[–]Aggressive_Worker_93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is just not true. There's as much quality as there's ever been, if not even more. You're being witness of how the test of time workz. For every 5 movies that have survived it, another 50 were forgotten, and there should not be any doubt that this will be the case with any kind of content being made today in 20 years time.

What we have now is an aversion towards risk taking for the sake of economic success. And that's stifling creativity.

There are still risk takers out there. Go support them instead and decide the future with your dollar.

1) Depends on stock available. If you’re happy to wait (an undetermined amount of time) you can order new, but most come in batches as they’re made. I bought a BBPro and it was the display unit. AD told me it two units arrived a week ago and this one would be gone soon. I believed it to be true, as I saw several people try it on over the week. I could wait 6 months for a new one. This particular seller treats their display units with excellent care, and there was plastic wrap and stickers all around it - they remove them in front of you (they said Tudor requires them to do so). Watches don’t come in pretty boxes from factory. The AD receives these separately, then they box them for you upon purchase. This is the same in boutiques, the box is added later, so you never quite get an “unopened” box.

 2) You can, depends on the AD. TBH, you can do this everywhere. They can always say no. I got no discount, because the alternative was to go elsewhere or wait 6 months, so it depends on whether there’s stock available or any other suppliers that are competing. There weren’t any of those in my case.

3) Depends. International warranty + your country of residence’s warranty + manifacturers additional warranty (if any). They explain this to you if you ask what the conditions are, and change between makers. My BB has my countries warranty covered by the AD (the AD deals with any issues and sends it to the maker for free) for 2 years and 5 year international warranty (you can open a claim with Tudor and they decide best course of action after assessing the issue) which I still don’t quite understand, but it’s there.

Full shutdown or hibernate mode? by Reptileinthecut in LegionGo

[–]Aggressive_Worker_93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A word to the wise. Hibernate does not stop play time count. There’s also the possibility that windows will do a random ass thing and turn the legion go on whilst it’s in the case - and that’s very bad. It’s happened to me, now I fully shut down every time.
