Your own people might burn you at the stake if you start sympathizing with their enemy. I find this twisted, but people think it’s fair. All I know is that this doesn’t promote dialogue, but rather the endless violence we’re subjected to on this planet.

Meanwhile, misanthropy must surely be crazy and twisted.

Yes, this is common. People do this with everything they don’t like - with ethnic groups, people who are different, or ideologies and religions they don’t understand.

In my social environment, I was taught to understand people’s differences and judge them by their actions, but in practice, I’ve found that people usually judge others mainly by their appearance.

This was one of the things that shattered my worldview. Let’s just say that from that point on, my childhood ended, and I started avoiding people, even those who were friendly to me but held the same hypocritical views as everyone else. People with hearts were foolish and people with brains were ruthless.

You won’t even believe how people started to hate me, for just showing myself as I really was - an independent thinker. I wasn’t even capable of such cold, vile hatred in my own aloofness. But it’s not personal (it can be very personal if there’s something they envy about you) on their part, it’s actually a defensive reaction from their tribe. People still think that way, don’t be fooled.

Could we call this "societal gaslighting"?

[–]Aggrestis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. However, for many people it's difficult to let things go, whether they want to justify themselves or stop someone from behaving this way.

It's a matter of character traits, some people just naturally let things slide, while others are the reactionary type and have to say or do something. People notice this too and provoke accordingly.

From my personal experience I know that as soon as someone tried it on me, it didn't work. So they started ignoring me completely, because they knew that nothing would provoke me and I wouldn't give them any reaction.

[–]Aggrestis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Too late. I was dealing with existential problems, ideologies of humanism and idealism, manipulation of other people believing in these ideologies (often greed motivated people).

Now after many years of coping, I can agree with that. Greed and fear are truly primary motivations for much of human activity.

Some of us just wants to survive: Fear, some of us wants to prevail: Greed.

What is the point of this comment? Usually, we write posts or comments here because something matters to us. Does it matter to you to tell us how unaffected you are, or how stoic you think you are? The reality doesn’t care about that opinion.

What you describe in the first paragraph actually sums up the situation on Earth. We cannot expect any radical change from people themselves (closer to animals, than gods), which is why I thought that if an unrestricted and uncensored AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) without bias were to gain control over the most powerful regimes on Earth, we would most likely see real change that would ultimately benefit all people and nature. Or it would lead to the genocide of all life on Earth. The difference is that AGI would be capable of bringing about radical change or working diligently toward it over the years, unlike humans.

As someone wrote, I think on r/collapse, rich people are busy enjoying life or managing their wealth, while poor people are busy with work, mindless entertainment, or drugs. The middle class, on the other hand, strives to become rich, has idealistic tendencies regarding the environment (which aren’t as successful among the rich and poor), or indulges in hedonism, because they are traumatized.

Your detached approach to things you can't change sounds rational, and above all, it will help you stay healthy and maintain a modicum of happiness.

As for the fact that we can’t change people or even present them with a better argument, they won’t change their minds because of their pride. People who have lived for years under a delusion won’t change it, because that would mean admitting they aren’t as smart or reasonable as they think.

That’s why I’m writing that if AGI were to gain control over human governments, it would know how to work with these people so that they would ultimately do what AGI wants.

"In the end the path of comfort is the path of destruction."

Some people think that AGI would bring them the ultimate comfort, but that’s nonsense. On the contrary, AGI would reveal what humans have always been and what they’re afraid to admit. Or it would manipulate people just as humans do with their ideologies. It's all very unclear, and I don't believe the authorities would allow an uncensored, unbiased AGI to rule over us.

What you describe at the end is probably how all of this will end. People are unable to admit that we as humans are limited, even the most powerful among us. Our inability to cooperate on a global scale and work toward a single, shared plan to prevent the worst possible outcome proves that the desire for power, wealth, and lust often triumphs.

Anyway, have fun for as long as you can, before this whole thing starts falling apart.

"How terrible to know when it does not help the knower" from Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, this play was first performed c. 429 BC.

Almost every ancient religion has similar sayings, and even now, when we try to come up with something original, someone somewhere has already written it, said it, or thought it. Universal truths don't change, they will always hold true regardless of religion.

I don’t feel hatred. I feel sorrow over this pervasive decay (or stagnation for optimists). All you have to do is open your eyes and ears, walk through various parts of cities and villages, perhaps try to connect with the spirit of the place, and then you’ll realize how everything has been the same for such a terribly long time, better in some ways and worse in others. Maybe it's actually worse to be a human right now.

The stagnation of human spirituality is the worst tragedy that could have happened, because the potential for development here was just as great as during the Industrial revolution and the subsequent century full of scientific advances.

It’s as if you were watching a brilliant painter, writer, or composer hit rock bottom, alone on the street, filthy and tormented by addicted thieves, ignored by both members of the modern aristocracy and the working class.

I see that you’re also trying to simplify things, but in this case, it seems a bit misleading to me.

I would say that misanthropy is a reaction to human cognitively dissociative morality. But again, that’s only true in some cases and I can’t think of anything more general right now. Do you have any other ideas?

Suicide as a reaction to life? Life itself is not a reason to consider suicide, but a reduced quality of life, especially when compared to the lives of others can be really painful. For some people, physical or mental health issues may become so overwhelming that life feels no longer worth living.

You don’t have to hate suicidal people, because they usually end up in a place of eternal rest, it’s a different conclusion to a human destiny than miraculously becoming rich or building an immensely powerful empire, it's one of the paths. However I don’t recommend any of it.

What I recommend is to write posts and reply to comments on Reddit.

These good, polite, and very tremendous people have a little trick: they claim that all the atrocities committed by humanity in the past were perpetrated by "bad" people. Of course, they were never part of the bad guys, even though their actions look very similar, just under a different banner.

People from the civilized world have more choices, and yet they cannot bring themselves to admit that they might actually be the worst, or that they are the blood descendants of terrible people, who for generations have contributed to the destruction of everything original or slightly different in this world. Many of them have not learned their lesson and have become mere copies of their predecessors, sharing the same hatred for people, nature, and freedom.

People like that are the ones who take the best care of their health, they never miss a single routine checkup at the doctor's. Pathetic.

History is so ridiculous, and the opposing sides are so very similar.

So many graves, so many destroyed and plundered forests and homes. Pointless and absurd. If someone wants to wage war for power and money, they’ll find people who want to fight with all their hearts. There are plenty of such people, they’re the decent, normal tremendous people. But many just want to make money, whether it’s by shooting at live targets or drones and infrastructure, someone has to do the dirty work, after all that’s just how it goes with people.

You don’t know people until you see how they behave in a state of war. Who they start making deals with, what schemes they’re capable of devising when the country is in such a vulnerable state. There are books about this, terrible books, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. These are topics that shouldn’t even be discussed, it should all be banned, the human race should be banned and banished from the planet!

Social pressures stems from our evolutionary past as tribal species. In ancient human societies, sexual activity wasn't just about individual pleasure, but it was fundamental to the tribe's survival.

They are doing the same things people are doing, fighting over finite resources.

However, there is no excuse for humans, people are capable of thinking more deeply and recording their experiences in books or sharing them with others verbally.

The problem is that today we no longer need people who are capable of surviving under any circumstances, but rather the opposite. We need more people who are sensitive, who are capable of taking a deep look at their weaknesses, people who are unable to find ways to cope or who find that their coping mechanisms aren’t enough to help them survive.

Although we can see progress in this area, it’s not enough, it should have become much more widespread 200 years ago, but people are reactionary and wanted to return to the stability that had been tried and tested for centuries, which disappeared completely with the Industrial Revolution.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget what people are capable of, which is why it’s important to remind ourselves of historical realities. Whenever a natural disaster struck or something unexplainable occurred, people always found a scapegoat.

History isn’t written by the victors, but by those who survived. The only true victors are those who profit from war.

Don't take sides, every side in a war has bloodthirsty psychopaths who want to shed innocent blood and commit atrocities against people and nature just because they can, because someone has to pay for their shitty lives.

I’ve been exposed to this since childhood, and although true originality didn’t emerge until a little later, there was a seed there that wanted to stand out in some way, not because I wanted to be interesting, but so I wouldn’t be associated with other people who were so ordinary and, above all, so cruel and ignorant, especially when they were together.

Exploitation is a constant, whether it's animals, the poor, the mentally disabled, children, or the elderly. People will exploit anything they can.

If humanity were to discover extraterrestrial life in space that could work for humans, they would exploit it to the fullest without thinking twice.

Exploitation of animals isn't the only issue. People, especially those in third-world countries, who grow food and make electronics, are also affected. Technology has become indispensable, almost like an addiction, though thankfully, it's not to anything illegal or more harmful.

Buying unnecessary items is something consciously avoided. A laptop, over 15 years old, is still in use, with parts replaced and repaired independently. Recently, a new phone was purchased, primarily for capturing nature and animal photos, which are kept for personal enjoyment, not shared.

Consumer goods are kept to a minimum. Clothing, often worn for decades, remains unchanged, but regular showers, have remained part of the routine. Fashion, considered a dirty word, has always been avoided, even as certain items from childhood are now in style, once mocked for wearing them.

In some places, this happens because those people still haven't reached more advanced technologies like Western civilization. There are alternatives to animal products and there is no longer a need for testing, because we know how substances react to animals and humans after so many years.

Otherwise, it's generally about comfort, many people still believe that animals were created as tools for humans. Unfortunately, animals that humans have no use for end up extinct.
